TVs: Longmire, Continuum, Saving Hope

A. Longmire is a show about a cranky old white dude solving crime. If this is your thing, you should be watching it. If, like me, you are incredibly tired and do not give a crap about cranky old white dudes, this is not the show for you.

Not even Katee Sackhoff could save this mediocre (and incredibly obvious) piece of crap show. (when your premiere episode is about hookers, one would hope for at least a little of the narrative to give them some agency, but instead, they are merely Faceless Hookers)

(sadly, I will probably watch it more for Katee, as she is not on my tv in any other capacity)

B. Episode two of Continuum was a bit better than the first, although Alec is still creepy as hell (and the show doesn't acknowledge it). Also, still WAY HINKY that all the terrorists are people of color. I'm just sayin'.

C. If watching Michael Shanks stand around in a tux all day is your thing? You should watch this show. Sadly for him, his wife is probably having more fun shooting people and blowing things up on Continuum. Though the pilot stole Alec from Continuum for a while (srsly, Vancouver, do you not have more than twenty working actors?). And Hale was in it for 5.3 seconds (though he seems to be a full-time cast-member, so might get more time later on).

It's pretty much an E.R. substitute, but with 'ghosts'. I appreciated that the women talked to each other, even if almost every plotline was kinda predictable (and about love).

Saving Hope was totally not my thing, but I may keep watching? It's weird. I'm also wondering how long they can spin out the premise. It would be kind of cool if he got back into his body but still retained the ghost whisperer thing and then had to reconcile that with his job and his fiance and all.

I'm hoping it will quickly go the "I was a ghost, this is all wierd, I see dead people" route. But it was entertaining to watch (and I like most of the characters)

I was pleased to see one person of colour who wasn't a terrorist, AND she got the show to scrape a Bechdel pass! (My low standards are low.) I'm hoping that casting Cigarette Smoking Man as older Alec means that they are going to get into the creepiness at some stage, but certainly not yet.

Yes, and the really tall cop guy is of indeterminate origin. So I'm not being entirely fair to the show. BUT.

(also it has women doing things and being smart, and I appreciate that)

Agreed on Longmire. I just...If the show was about Katee's character, I'd probably love it but alas, she has to play second fiddle to a character I do not give a crap about. But it has Katee and Cassidy Freeman so I'll probably keep watching until my schedule becomes too full.

Episode 2 of Continuum was definitely better and the other female characters actually got lines! But yeah...not thrilled that almost all of the POC are evil.

Saving Hope...I was actually a bit disappointed in. Granted, I probably shouldn't have had any expectations but I expected to at least kind of enjoy a show with so many actors I love (all three leads plus K.C. Collins) and I just...didn't. Like Longmire, I'll keep watching until there's more summer TV to distract me.

With SH, I'd read your review of it, so I prepared myself not to like it--so I was kinda expecting not to? I really do think I'd rather watch St. Elsewhere, though (which occasionally had out-of-body experiences--I think I even have that episode on tape somewhere). But I didn't hate it, and it managed to pass Bechdel with pretty good flying colors (unlike Longmire which didn't pass it at all the first episode, though I didn't really expect it to)

Continuum, otoh, is beginning to grow on me -- for the second episode, I wasn't really looking forward to it. But the third one, I was all excited to watch.
