sff: Call the Midwife
This was recced during Halfamoon, so I thought I'd give it a try (after watching the trailer and being amused at how I knew nearly every one of the nuns).
The link there gives a sort of tiny, brief, overview. It's a show about a group of midwives and nuns living in the East End of London, caring for the people there. It has its cute moments and laughter. But it's not a light show (well, it is in some ways), as it also deals with death and birth. (and in one episode, incest--I have the suspicion that's why episode five is a bit difficult to find)
While I found some of the plotlines predictable, I still found them engrossing to watch. Probably because a good 85% of the action (such as it is) and dialogue belong to the women in the series. (In fact, I'm not entirely sure there's ever a scene with two men talking to each other--and it doesn't feel as though it's lacking)
After all, the show is about them.
One of the McGann brothers does a turn as a doctor, which is slightly confusing (if only because I heard his voice first and was like "why is Eight in this?"), but he's mostly there as their back-up band. Does it well, too.
The show is based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, and I'd like to think that she isn't rolling in her grave at the liberties they've most likely taken.
