oh, that makes sense (light bulb moment)

Jane Espenson is writing for Once Upon a Time. Suddenly, my extreme disinterest in the show makes entirely logical (if subconscious) sense. I mean, I knew she was, ages ago. But I didn't connect my disinterest with the fact that I dislike almost everything I've seen her write for tv.

Or maybe I'm just grasping at straws.

I'm not actually watching it, though. I haven't in weeks! It's just nice to figure out why I stopped perservering or whatever the word for it is. (I might even like her current episode)

And it's more a facepalm at myself for letting my previous feelings towards a writer color current stuff. (I managed to get over disliking whatsisface who wrote The Woman, King, after all)

Heh. Well, I'm not actively watching. I stopped a few weeks ago, and haven't found any reason to start again--but I couldn't figure out why I didn't push myself to watch more.

Now I know (I mean, aside from being uninterested in Rumpels)

Where she brutally murdered Vera Juarez and made it all about a racist white guy's pain at having to cover his own ass. (oh, right, and the asshole dude who fucked her and treated her like shit also got to be Sad about it)

Not something to remember her happily by.

To be fair to her, I actually really like most of the episode she wrote for Kat (even if it was cliche-driven, I appreciated FINALLY having an episode that didn't hand-feed us every little plot point).

It always makes me happy when somebody says they're not really into the show - like, not because I hate it, and I'm super happy for the people who are into it, it's just that I've tried so hard to be interested in it and am just really, really not. And for the longest time it felt like I was totally alone in that, so it's always a little reassuring to know that I'm not ;)

The premise sounded really fun, and I want to like it, but I just... they're not doing anything that's really different from other shows.

That's pretty much how I feel about it - I love it in theory, and based on the characters and premise and everything, but the actually execution just does nothing for me. (I try not to mind because, while it's awesome to be able to squee over a new show - especially one most of my friends love too - it's not like I actually need a new one.)

I figured it was people associated with Lost/JJ Abrams stuff, in general? They tend to make things that on paper seem entirely made for me, but the execution consistently leaves me cold and unable to connect emotionally with any characters. Um. Yeah. I am not loving "Once Upon a Time" at all, and I really, really wanted to. Which is not to say I hate it...it's just very, very MEH to me.

I have liked Espenson in the past and generally associated her with good stuff before BSG, but since then, meh.

I never watched Lost--no, wait, my roommate tried to watch an episode during the first season once, and I paid a little attention to it and thought it was a shitty, pointless effort in Look How Awesome We Are--so I don't have the avoidance for him that others do?

The problem is, I think Espenson is a very nice person, but every time she gets involved with something I'm vaguely interested in...

Then again, I refuse to watch something with Ron touching it, either. So maybe I'm not being pointlessly prejudiced?

Jane's writing is really hit or miss for me. I've loved some of it and HATED some of it so...IDK...But I've completely lost all interest in OUAT. I've missed like, 3-4 episodes and realized I have absolutely no desire to catch up. I feel like they had a lot of potential in the beginning but they're making everything too simplified in a 'good' vs 'evil' kind of way that just holds no appeal for me. And I'm not impressed with their views on adopted vs biological parents, tbh, or the way they're developing the Snow/Charming relationship. So...yeah...I basically stopped watching without really making the decision to.
