why do we beg when we can borrow? (adventures in Doctor Who audioland)
I've been listening to Six's Lost Season stories, which is nice as, well, Six is fab even when he's all bombastic (and Peri!). Sadly, not all of them are good.
a. I was amused by Paradise 5 as all during it, I kept going "Hallo, Lucifer Rising." and then of course it was written by half of LR's writing team, so (it was also very Seven in tone, with the way there was undercover work and set-up--I was not amused by "women in the future are still just sex objects" however).
b. Unsurprisingly, Point of Entry was written by Marc Platt (which explained my dislike of it, though I did manage to listen to it). It amazes me how an entire story was filled with unlikable characters and none of them were murdered brutally for my enjoyment.
c. I quite liked Leviathan. So much so that I have vague ideas about fic around the concept.
d. My enjoyment of The Song of Megaptera was marred a bit by the production staff congratulating themselves upon how they'd had more than one woman in the story. Good job, guys. Half the human race, and you managed to make women 15% of the cast! My annoyance was deepened when they lauded themselves on not making her a woman acting like a man. She was, after all, an engineer. The chief one, even! Shit, women in engineering is like finding unicorns, apparently (and if you do, they act like men). Even in the far far far far far future.
No bonus points, idiots.
e. You would have to pay me to listen to Mission to Magnus. I cannot stand Sil and never will. The less said about Nightmare Fair (incredibly boring) and Hollows of Time (all child characters should be shot on sight), the better. [seriously, I kept waiting for NF and HoT to get better. And they never did]
f. Tomorrow is the last one of that season, I believe.
2. I have also managed to listen to two of the audios with Thomas Brewster. I still loathe him and would like the writers to never use their self-insert by-the-numbers-David Copperfield asshole again. He makes me want to find every one of the people who thought he was a good idea and punch them in the balls. (as a side note, I would possibly like Thomas Brewster if the character had been female. But I'm not entirely sure)
2a. EVELYN SMYTHE, though. I do love. Though I don't love how she's almost NEVER referred to as "Dr. Smythe" anymore. It's... I kind of feel like she's being diminished? The plots are sort of doing that, too. She's more and more the "screaming companion who sprains her ankle". Which is fucking obnoxious. (ffs, I shouldn't be able to listen to something written off a script in '87 and turn around to listen to something written in '09 and have both female companions be utterly useless despite two decades' worth of tv and screen-writing progress)
3. I also listened to the last of the Charley audios--which is depressing as I really like Charley. I don't like Mila, which is a first for me given she's female. But I don't. She's selfish and horrible and caused very bad things. I also really dislike the idea that the TARDIS didn't like Charley--it's so "women don't get along, lol" that's typical of men writing women.
4. I like DI Menzies, though. MENZIES FOR NEW COMPANION, GODDAMN. I would actually buy BF releases for her.

Anyway, I love Six so much better in the Audios! But yeah, things got really weird with Charley and Mila - I didn't enjoy the way that came out at all. But apparently they're going to give Charley her own series or something? That would be cool - I liked how very comfortable she became with technology and time travel and so on by the end.
I just went to wiki to read up on what happens to Evelyn - DO NOT WANT omg.

I am actually looking forward to Charley getting her own audios--I think she sort of needed to move on from the Doctor, but the way they went about it didn't really sit well with me (ok, and also, I don't like God-like aliens). It rubbed me the wrong way, as it were. sigh.
Six in the audios is very different to his television persona--he's still got the bluster, but he's... blunted? Well, ok, and the key difference is that the writers aren't trying to shove in action! and sex! whilst not offending people. It's more grown-up, I guess? If that makes sense.
(and while I enjoy BF, and think a lot of their product has been miles better than the revived tv series--especially the first four years--I still think they fail a bit. Possibly more than a bit.)

Oh, I agreee! There are pluses - more aliens! No need for expensive special effects! But the minuses are still there, with female characters, and with non-British characters - the Aussie story, with Lucy and the Eighth Doctor, that was just painful for me, and I wince similarly when I'm listening to German characters, USian characters. (Though, having said that, I did really like Peri's mum!)
