sff: Torchwood 4x1
I refuse to call it 'Miracle Day', as that's always been a laughably stupid title. It is sort of epically cheesy in best Torchwood traditions for a title, though. So perhaps it will grow on me.
GWEN. I have missed her SO SO MUCH. I didn't even know HOW MUCH until she first appeared, and I was all "OMG GWEN HIHIHIHI."
I don't really like the whole thing where she apparently hated Torchwood and doesn't miss it, but, whatever. I'm sure it's bullshit to keep Rhys happy (especially since HE hates it so much. WAY TO BE AN ASSHOLE, THERE, RHYS--like, um, ngl, I thought that hospital scene where he Laid Down The Law was douchetastic). And also bullshit to hide from the government or whatever. Which, meh.
BUT GWEN POINTED GUNS A LOT. And shot things. And blew up a helicopter. (and, aw, Andy)
I really liked Esther. She's adorable and curious, and a little out of her depth with the lying--but still very determined. AND SEARCHING THROUGH BOXES. She won me right there. That has been MY JOB more than once, searching through dusty piles of boxes for invoices and shit. <3
SHE JUMPED OUT A WINDOW INTO A FOUNTAIN. Welcome to Torchwood, Esther.
Liked Dr. Juarez, too. She's bright and compassionate, and FREAKED OUT, but dealing. I loved that she objected to cutting that man's head off. Not that it mattered, of course.
Rex was sort of blandly uninteresting, in a "I AM AMERICAN MALE, ALL BOW BEFORE ME" over the top way.
Esther's BFF, Noah (I think?), was adorable, too. SHE OWES HIM DINNER.
The episode was EPICALLY cheesy. BEACH CHASE. SHOOTING THROUGH A WINDOW AT A HELICOPTOR. A plane ride that took thirty seconds! METAL POLES THROUGH REX'S CHEST. REX FAINTING. REX STEALING TORCHWOOD FOR AMERICA (srsly, are we supposed to take that 456 act bullshit seriously?).
TORCHWOOD AS A VIRAL CAMPAIGN. ahahahahaha.
On the "WHY IS THIS EVEN HERE" side:
The opening scene was really shit-tastic, and so was every subsequent "NO, REALLY, CHILD RAPIST-MURDERERS ARE PEOPLE TOO" scene, thank god for the ability to fast-forward. Ftr, surgically removing all of Bill Pullman's scenes doesn't affect the plot. So why are they there again?
OH RIGHT. They're ~edgy~

I was a bit pissed at Rhys for his douchey behavior at the hospital but I forgave him when he showed that he dislikes Jack as much as I do :)
I adored all the new characters minus Rex and Bill Pullman and agree that his storyline should just be removed completely because it doesn't fit with the overall narative and...is just awful, really.
But I'm just glad Gwen is back and spent most of the episode yelling, 'GWEN, HOW I MISSED YOUR FACE!' ♥

Rhys's douchey behavior was aaaarrrrgh. (he's always disliked Jack, it's always been sort of hilarious)
I MISSED HER FACE, TOO.

I didn't at all get that Danes is meant as a sympathetic character. From the prepublicity I've rather gotten a vague impression that he's an antagonist.

I think she means it when she says it. But it's probably transference of concern for Anwen. The gripping hand is, the grin on her face when she and Jack regard the burning helicopter.

AND YES. I don't understand why Rex is suddenly In Charge. That whole 456 Order crap was basically a plot device (Rex himself is pretty much a plot device, at this point).

Actions speak louder than words. Everything about her actions says the opposite, up to and including her "fairytale" to Anwen.

He said the same things to Gwen that my mother was saying to her, except Mom said it before he did.
