I'm gonna talk about Thor

For lo, we went and saw it last night. (we then returned and watched DW, but that is for another post, as cross-pollination is spoilery and silly)

I went in without a lot of expectations (outside of knowing things like Certain People were up in arms over Heimdall being black as OMG NORSE GODS AREN'T BLACK), and without a lot of knowledge about comics!Thor, as the last time I paid him any attention was during Onslaught, and that was only because SUPERSHINYCROSSOVER EVENT.

Anyway, I quite enjoyed it. It didn't really talk down to the viewers, with more than one plotline running along. And there was a sort of theme of "taking the fight to the enemy is not always the right course" and "peace is not always achieved through superior firepower". Or at least, it was implied. Odin was a bit of a manipulative bastard, but I can't honestly blame him when his sons were both a bit lacking--well, ok, if you combined Thor and Loki, you'd get a wise ruler, but separated out, they each had different characteristics that the other could have used.

Jane Foster was a lovely surprise, and I quite loved her. Especially since the movie never made her The Girl, she was always a part of things and a scientist first. Sure, she and Thor have a kiss and there's the whole Maybe They Like Each Other thing, but it wasn't used to just stick her in the role of "useless girlfriend" (I admit I kept waiting for them to fridge her, and was pleased when they didn't) -- though, I do find it hilarious that they made "Thor reforms" all about his "love for the Earth woman" as opposed to, idk, not being worthy of the Hammer and shit (I suppose it was short-hand for "saw how courageous the little people were and took it to heart" or something)

One of the things I really liked, too, was that when Thor was de-powered, he told his friends that he'd just get in their way. It was logical and smart, and I appreciate that sort of tactical thinking from a guy who was sort of an idiot earlier on in the movie.

It actually took me a while to like Thor (the shirtlessness helped), really. He was sort of an asshole idiot who listened to no one.

Sif was also awesome, and it was really nice to see a 'warrior woman' who was fully-clothed and fucking wore armor that didn't just cover her tits.

In fact, it was nice to see a super-hero movie where women in skimpy dress and spandex was not the norm. I am sure there are fanboys whining about the lack of T&A, because I have little faith in humanity. I just hope the movie does well enough that people take the idea that women can be badass without being undressed to heart.

Darcy was also fun, and while I had to look up Frigga, she was also good, too.

And I'm not gonna lie. I would watch a whole movie about Jane Foster's skience experiments to discover wormholes. Because that would be awesome. But I'm weird like that, and science is sexy. (the fact that the movie STARTS with her and Darcy made me gleeful)

And yes, I can femslash up the entire movie. Sif/Frigga, for instance? "My queen" has definite possibilities. So does Darcy/Jane comfort/boredom sex. Then there's Jane/Sif or Darcy/Sif, or threesomes. ahem. But that is because I have an exceedingly dirty mind.

I saw it last night too. Went in with really low expectations, but really, I enjoyed it. It was fun and pretty, and kind of like Thor: shallow, pretty, funny, and strangely charming. I haven't laughed out loud at a film like that in a while. Though, I would have liked to have seen the supposed undying devotion between Jane and Thor be a little more believable developed than "Wow, You're hot. I think I love you." Lol. But I am sure that is just me. Plus, that's what fanfic is for, right? ;)

Loved Darcy to death. And it's kind of fun to watch these as someone with zero background in comics, because it takes me a second to place Agent Coulson (?) and the random shout outs to Stark and the inclusion of the sharpshooter guy I can only assume to be another superhero type, is kind of amusing to try and string together, like we are really getting a small glimpse of a larger universe. I like that.

But, I would have liked to see the wife of Odin be a smidge more badass. I mean, at least she tried. But, yeah.

Jane Foster is kind of an unusual Superhero's Girlfriend; the relationship ends almost as quickly as it begins, right in the middle of the '60s. Sif (and a hunky no-name guy) are hurriedly introduced so both characters can move on, and Jane fades into almost total obscurity. So the movie had a lot of freedom to reinvent the character, and not build around some idea that Thor and Jane are destined to get together like Superman and Lois.

I consider it most appropriate that Thor earned the hammer by getting himself fridged. That is how it is done.

Seriously. Very much the whole point that Odin was trying to drive into his dumbass son's head. By understanding that he doesn't know everything, and isn't the most important thing in the world, only then is he worthy.

Also, based on your icon: how did you feel about Barton's painfully short cameo?

I think they could have made it Agent Nobody of SHIELD with a sniper rifle and the scene would have been exactly the same. The only reason to make it Hawkeye is to tease his character for the Avengers movie, but if his character is just "some guy in SHIELD" that isn't anything worth crowing about.

I'm the first to admit Hawkeye's backstory won't work in one of these movies, and short of devoting half of an Iron Man sequel to him there isn't room to do him justice. But it's lazy to just cram him into SHIELD and it detracts from what makes him special--he's the carny who decided he could hang with iron men and thunder gods with nothing but arrows and stubborn pride.

I love Jane, right down to her building all of her own equipment, being much more interested in her science than the guy for much of the film and for having such an awesome intern as Darcy. There are a number of cool women in the film and the prospects for fandom to build upon them (especially with underserved Frigga!) are many.

Have you seen some of the fic that's popping up on AO3? There's a couple of Darcy-centric stories that are especially fun.

I'm just impressed there were so many women to draw from for twosomes/threesomes. They had names and lines! :-D

I loved Idris Elba since Ultraviolet and as far as I'm concerned he can play anyone he wants to.

I had fun watching this. Chris Hemsworth was pretty. The effects were even more so. It also had so many great actors that they would probably be able to sell anything but still the great love affair between Thor and Jane felt little fake. The whole thing of them being so in love and suffering because of the separation was the weakest part of the movie but at least she did something about it. So go Jane.

I liked Jane and her astrophysics obsession and her enthusiasm about science. I loved Darcy sarcasm and the taser thing was hilarious. And I loved Sif and her costume so much. I just wish Frigga had more to do.

Erik was funny. Loki was more sad then evil and frankly I wished he could've been saved from his mistakes the way Thor was even though I knew this was impossible in the cannon.

I thought it was a blast! And I also liked what they did with Jane Foster. I must admit, I also chortled at the running gag where she kept hitting Thor with her car...

"Who was it that convinced all of Asgard that a woman could be as mighty a warrior as any man?"

"I did."

"...yes, but I supported you!"

That will never stop being funny. XD

I loved how Sif's dress at the end feast had sort of a suggestion of armor, but still gorgeous. Warrior woman, semi-out of armor. :)
