Well. The theory is that Kitty Pryde is naturally intangible, and it's a matter of will that keeps her from falling through things. Some sort of unconscious firming of her feet/etc.

However, fan theory for a long time held that orgasm would, say, send her falling through the lighthouse. And canon managed to finally get in on that action, with Kitty falling through the kitchen at Xavier's that one time. Though I think that might've been a dream.

But then, no one ever asks those questions when people are walking through walls.
