sff: Poirot 'Third Girl'
I don't normally talk about watching Poirot, but this is one of the stranger ones (the book itself is pretty out there and convolutedly insane), and it's sort of sticking in my head right now.
1. Jemima Rooper is Norma R., and she's very good at being half-confused and vulnerable and just... NOT THELMA. It was so disconcerting (even if my Hex watching was spotty and two years ago one random marathon afternoon)
2. I seem to recall that the book has drugs involved as well--part of Norma's recovery is some sort of withdrawal. I wish they'd kept that, it makes her seem... more damaged that they removed it? I don't know, but it felt off without it.
3. ARIADNE OLIVER AND HER BALLS OF STEEL. HOLY SHIT. I can hope to be that awesome when I'm her age.
4. The other change was that the girl, Frances? iirc, in the book, she plays the part of Sir Roderick's secretary AND the flatmate, and that's one of the other things that tips Norma into feeling like she's going mad. (it was one of the more convoluted bits, though, so I can see why they removed it)
5. These more recent Poirot's are so dark and depressing. But then, they're the later books which are less cheerful I believe. There's a very different feel to them, one more somber and dark (the Suchet Death on the Nile, for instance. Or Orient Express which is just horrific and painful--erm, mostly in the good way)
6. Possibly, I should watch something fluffy. hrm
