sff: Inception
Blah, blah, blah, blah, spoilers behind cut, etc.
So. I enjoyed the concept of the dreamscapes, and some of the world-building, but, fuck, was the motivation for the lead stupid and trite. YET ANOTHER SUICIDAL, CRAZY AND DEAD WIFE AS MOTIVATION. Good job, Hollywood, you're not repeating yourselves or anything.
Coupled with the fact that diCaprio sucked the life out of every scene he was in, this movie is far too long and too boring to be re-watched. (every scene, people. He was so flat and wooden that I just kept thinking about taking naps and wishing I'd brought my laptop to get through the boring bits--which there were a lot of, because his Manpain was SO TOTALLY SPECIAL and all and not like ten billion other fucking movies, nope, not at all)
I will pretend it was really all about Ariadne and Mal trying to wake loser-boy from his catatonia, and that he'd been the one to really kill himself in real life. (shocking, I know, that I picked up on the only two women and decided they were plotting--incidentally, the movie manages to pass the Bechdel Test by a hair)
The rest of the cast was perfectly fine, in fact, anytime diCaprio wasn't on-screen, the movie soared and was interesting and wonderful. I could have watched an hour of Arthur and Ariadne and Eames building dreamscapes and card tricks and shit. Unfortunately, he was the lead.
So, yes. If you ever want to torture the fuck out of me, force me to watch Inception again, and if you want to pile on more diCaprio, I'll probably break before the fifth hour out of sheer desperation for something decent to watch.
eta: Not to mention the part where I want to punch the writer in the face: that I'm supposed to feel sorry for this man who MIND-RAPED HIS WIFE so she wouldn't leave HIS FANTASY WORLD. Fuck that fucking bullshit.

However, I do agree with you on many other points. There's only two women in the whole movie, and one of them is a construct of a male character's subconscious. And as my other half said sarcastically, "Well, at least they didn't fridge his wife...oh, wait."
I think this could have been much more successful if the wife-construct had been less vindictive and more like someone who was trying to rescue her husband from a dream state. In that case, we really WOULD be wondering if he were awake or asleep.

I think part of DiCaprio's issues (for me) was his dialogue, sadly. He had good bits, when he was talking to his kids and when he wasn't Focused and Angsty about his dead wife (or talking about her). And his scenes with Mal were pretty good (she helped, by sparking off of him, I think)
And the opening con was very well done.

I though it was more about his guilt for driving her crazy being the motivation, which is a pretty good motivation since he actually did that and should feel bad about it. I just don't understand why we had to suffer for it. You are right that there was way too much of it. With every moment spent on his Manpain I cared less and less. I thought he should just go get some therapy instead of going for self destruction and dragging everyone else with him. He was sabotaging his own missions. Arthur should've dump him long ago.
I agree so much. Ariadne, Arthur and Eames would make an awesome team and I wish movie was more about them too.
