thursday is almost friday

1. I have slogged through to Horse and His Boy (I do not hold with this 'in canon order' nonsense, and prefer my Narnia out of timeline order), which is unfortunately hard-going due to, well, the racism (only the white boy is 'good'). I find myself actively disliking most of the "they need improvement" lead characters (Eustace, Edmund, Jill, Aravis, Shasta). I expect it's a lack of empathy for misbehaving and selfish children? I don't know. Possibly, I over-identify with the ones in charge like Susan and Peter.

2. I'm still unable to hear assss-lannn without snickering. Luckily, more of the audio readers go for azzz-lann or az-lawn.

3. Links:
SGA Kink Meme: http://community.livejournal.com/sga_kinkmeme/1800.html?style=mine (you will want the style=mine part, that is the ugliest layout ever)
Porn Battle Round-up from last time: http://community.livejournal.com/bsg_pornbattle/17538.html (also, the fifth round starts taking prompts tonight)
[livejournal.com profile] bsg_kink is voting on the recent drabble contest.

4. Ladyfest recs:
Amy Pond and Mrs. Peel (not by me)
nu!Trek, Uhura (also not by me)

5. I find myself oddly amused when I watch stuff with River and the Doctor. As much as they're being pushed as 'shippy', they're... really not. Like, they are, but they aren't. If that makes any sense. They're more caught up in events around them instead of Angsty Looks or kisses or whatever. I suspect this is why I sort of back-handedly ship them? Hrm.

6. On another note entirely, I tend to stop paying attention to reviews of Who that include phrases like "I prefer Amelia" or "I didn't like River in SitL/FotD". Just, y'know, an fyi. (also, it's totally the best way to get me to ignore you. Start every post with it, and you become invisible =D) (ps, try to explain and I'll probably killfile you for the annoyance)

7. I had forgotten this icon. Also, [livejournal.com profile] bluediamond421 is watching Lantis for the first time and would possibly like non-spoilery season-one Sparky fic recs. ;D

I think they should have left the Doctor on the other side of the crack, then series 6 could have been all River all the time as she works to rescue him. Really, can we just replace Doctor Who with the River Song Chronicles now please? kthxbai.

ASDFK. That would have been so awesome. someone write me a virtual season of this, stat

For about half a second during The Big Bang, I thought they were going to do that. Then I remembered that they don't have the guts to do it.

That is how it was read to me when I was wee so ASS LAN also bugs the hell out of me. I just picture an ugly American scenario with a middle aged balding guy in bermuda shorts and a camera hanging around his neck saying "ASS LAAAAN." IT REALLY BUGS ME TOO.

I watched the first couple of episodes of the DW series accidentally and I liked everything about it. It was cute.

*cracks up* YES THAT.

It's hard not to find DW cute.

I remember I could get through "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" (although I was all "why don't the girls DO anything?!") and "The Last Battle", but "The Horse and His Boy" made me give up as a child. Like you said, it's probably due to lack of empathy for the kids, so I completely agree.

I'm guilty of #6, sorry, but that's how I feel (although I can see how it would totally get annoying if I said it in every review). River Song and I had a fraught relationship in David Tennant's time.

My mother read them to us, so I'd gotten through them all before. And I think I loved them all? But it's different now (I'm finding it sort of fascinating, all the tropes that are so over-used today are sort of brand new in novels from half a century ago), if only because I do wince at things now that I didn't before.

The problem is that in season four, River was just like she is now, only, um, at the end of things while he was at the beginning. So to speak. So it never has and never will make sense that people see her differently now (not that everyone does); teh Moff didn't change her when he got his hands on the franchise, outside of stripping her of her friends and sticking her in jail.

For me, I think it's the fact that I felt she didn't have any chemistry with Ten. I agree that she hasn't changed, but the way she interacts with the Doctor has given we now have Eleven. Her and Eleven fit together better, but that is my own opinion. I'm just saying that might be why others didn't like her in S4.

5. I kinda get what you're saying? Like I think Amy/11 is so much more shippy than 11/River...but I 'ship 11/River more. I like the little teases we get of what their relationship could be in the future but I also like the dynamic they have in 11's present. But I probably 'ship everything so perhaps I'm not the best judge :)

6. I see how that could be annoying...I never understood why people didn't like River in series 4. I thought she was awesome right from the start. Granted, I didn't watch series 4 right away but when I finally got around to those episodes, I loved her. And I seem to love her more with every appearance she makes.

7. That icon is fantastic :D

5. I think it may be Matt Smith, too. Like, the way he approaches scenes with River (or the way he plays an ancient old man). I am also a fan of shipping everything. ;D

6. I was expecting River to be one-dimensional/awful/SOMETHING to explain why people didn't like her, and was... really confused. LIKE REALLY confused when I eventually met her for the first time (much like [livejournal.com profile] mtgat, it is possible that I was like "can I have one, please?" during SitL)

7. *g*

6. Right? I tend to love a lot of characters the rest of the fandom doesn't care for but prior to series 5, I saw SO much River hate that I thought she had to be a truly terrible character. I watched those episodes thinking 'But she's so awesome! She must do something EVIL to 10 or Donna to make everyone hate her so much.' Alas...she was just awesome and very few people recognized that. At least some people have come around in series 5 but there still isn't enough River love to please me :)

5) I have only seen what's aired on BBCAmerica so far, but I totally love River and the Doctor. Not exactly in a shippy way because I don't really want ship from Who, but they are so very old and married. In the best sort of way, in that they find each other kind of ridiculous and madding, but also totally awesome and a ridiculous amount of fun to be around.

Whheeee! Yes. Yes, they are. And that, too. I'm almost sort of hoping we never ever see them doing the whole traveling together thing, and it's ALWAYS random meetings at Important Events.

I totally agree with the old married couple description. I *like* old married couples. They work for me. :) I don't get people who dislike River; I generally assume they're batchippers who haven't gotten over the fact that Rose is gone. A number of people I otherwise like dropped quickly in my respect for them when they said they didn't like her. :P Every time she's on-screen, the words, "Imma marry her" tend to come out of my mouth. My highest hopes for next season include keeping up the awesome.

Sadly, I've seen the River Sux stuff from people who hated Rose/liked Martha/hated Martha/liked Donna/are oldskool fans who hate everything but The Doctor. And, to them, I shake a fist. And also console myself that it means there is MORE RIVER FOR ME.

Every time she's on-screen, the words, "Imma marry her" tend to come out of my mouth.

BWAHAHAHAHA. I definitely do the "can I have one?" bit, yes.
