sff: in plain sight

Hey, we remembered to watch this week, though it looks like we missed nothing.

Hey, you remember when IPS was a show about a woman whose life was crazy, surrounded by women? Yeah. It isn't that, anymore. Instead it's a show about a bunch of guys and their token 'quirky' chick. Awesome, right?

1. Good job, show, on getting rid of all the non-white people, there. And the women! Bobby D? Raph? Brandi? Eleanor? Who are they again?

2. So, Mary gives some sound advice about men to the token female witness. Advice which Mary herself completely ignores. On top of which, Mary dumps the token latino dude to date an asshole who thinks calling women 'kitten' is totally a-ok. I'm sure he just needs a Good Woman to reform him, right? Right.

It's ok, though! The asshole is white. So the show doesn't have to worry about having a racially diverse cast anymore. Y'know, since Albuquerque is so white.

I don't think the show was ever very good at it, but it did try in seasons one and two. Now it's not even bothering.

Next week: more white dudes surround our token chick. I can't wait.

You just summed up every problem I'm having with this season.

I love female centric shows. But one of the things I really loved about IPS is that it didn't marginalize men either. Marginalizing men bothers me less than doing it to women because, well, it's their turn, but balance is even better. And while it wasn't perfect, I loved that the men weren't always the heroes but they didn't have to be made into morons to make the women look better. Now not only is Mary the token female, but everyone around her, with the possible exception of Marshall, feels dumber too, because Mary always has to be right.

Just...bleh. Part of me wants to hope that it's just growing pains from getting a new show runner, and they'll find a good balance again. But I'm pretty sure this was probably the creative differences that made the network fire the first show runner to begin with. Which means this is probably what they want.

Way to fuck it up, USA.

All of this. *sigh* I might have groaned at Constance Burge's punning ep titles, but everything else about her show was stellar. Mary is still Mary, Marshall is still Marshall, and I'm still enjoying it, but not nearly as much, for all the reasons you two list.

Constance Burge? Really? I know that name. I don't watch IPS or Charmed, but I heard the latter went downhill when she left.

I was never a big Charmed fan, so it took me most of S1 of IPS to make the connection. It was the bad puns in the ep titles that actually did it. *wry g*

I caught some snippets of Charmed Seasons 4 and 5 while it was running, but it didn't look terribly interesting. Iremembered just now that I read Michael Trucco was in Season 1 as an evil Darklighter named Alec.

All of this is just confirming my networks are the root of all evil theory

I didn't even watch this week. I loved this show so much. I've never really felt like writing to a show and telling them why I've stopped watching before, but I do now. I have no idea who to write to though.

I'm so disappointed.

I'm sort of thinking of writing, myself. I meant to type stuff yesterday when I was all angry about it. Sigh.

I'm trying to figure out something that doesn't boil down to 'you changed it and now it sucks' and it's rather hard.

That's pretty much what I've got in my head. "This show was something unique and different, now it's just another cookie-cutter 'chick cop with her guy friends' show."
