Primeval, series three
So, I hear it's been renewed for a fourth and fifth? heheheh.
Ahem. If you're a fan, and you think it's v srs bsns, this is not the post for you.
1. Jenny got a new wardrobe which was basically Claudia's, but at least she's wearing SENSIBLE clothing, even if the blouses have atrocious, frumpy, frills (OMG IT WAS EATING HER FACE ONE EPISODE). She's also pretty badass with the shooting things. I think they did her a horrific disservice in her last episode, basically writing her atrociously and then kicking her out for not being male.
2. Sarah Page the new girl, is awesome. Hey, she's not white! (I bet the producers were wagging that at Rusty, yo) She even has lines, importance, and, um... Well, we assume she has a life? I mean, almost none of them have a life outside the ARC, but... Anyway, the best bit was when she snuck through an anomaly. <3 THAT IS RESEARCH FOR YOU.and unlike Cutter, Stephen and Daniel Jackson, she wasn't an idiot who screwed shit up
3. Abby... continues to be Abby, and I continue to have... reservations about her and Connor, though he's changed and grown and isn't the asshole/brat of the first series who lied his way into becoming her flatmate (which she took lying down). (save for that bit I read on wiki where she's apparently a child of abuse. WHY, TV, WHY. THAT DOES NOT MAKE HER MORE INTERESTING OMG)
3a. However, I cannot help the fact that my, um, brain wants Abby/Becker smuttiness. I think it's that whole thing where he thinks she's awesome and protects her and she thinks he's annoying, but lets him watch over her shoulder while he cures a dinosaur.
4. Helen. I just. There is so much wrong with how they've done Helen, it makes me so so annoyed. SHE HAS NO MOTIVATION. Like, none. She just shows up and breezes into the ARC (worst. security. ever.--like, at least in Torchwood, John Hart ambushes Jack and has better tech and shit and that all makes sense) and shoots people, holds people hostage, steals shit... And kills off clones and her husband. I feel like there's SO MUCH they could have done with her, and instead she's like theirdeus ex machina 'monster of the week' without a cause. That said, the woman they got to play her disguise was excellent (Kate Magowan, I think?); she moved like Helen and spoke with her inflections, it was sort of really creepy.
5. Christiiiine. Be still my heart. She was sort of awesome and devious, even if I was rooting mostly for Teh Team. (and the actress is married to Lester's actor, which makes it even more hilarious). She showed up in the OSC building for her first scenes with Lester, and then proceeded to be twisty and cruel and sometimes mean, but ultimately, nooot quite as bright as she should have been. I sort of think the show made a really shitty statement by killing her, though. It sort of echoes Claudia, Jenny, Helen and the woman from the newspaper: women in charge suck and should be killed/relieved of command. :/
6. Oh, Cutter. I knew you weren't long for the world, with your deathwish and big brain. Also, Helen doesn't need you anymore. That said, it was sort of nice to see that the world didn't end without him. (oh, and, um, that whole shot of him on the pavement brought back Exit Wounds flashbacks, and one of these things is so very not like the other.) ALSO HE DELIVERED A BABY, HOW HILARIOUS WAS THAT? (I demand Torchwood fic where Ianto and Tosh have to deliver a baby, with Owen giving them pointers from where he's stalking vampires in the sewers)
7. Connor. Shockingly, grew on me. Although that bit where he falls out of a tree and Danny and Abby move him around? WHAT FIRST AID DO YOU PEOPLE KNOW THAT SAYS MOVING A VICTIM OF A POSSIBLE BROKEN BONE/SPINAL FRACTURE IS A GOOD THING? Idiots. I should have remembered that one time Cutter pulled a woman out of a rolled-over vehicle.
8. Becker. The new muscle, as it were. He's not quite a cookie-cutter copy of the dude from the first series, but he was sort of faceless until I realized I didn't want him to die. Apparently, lack of personality and backstory notwithstanding, I like him? It's possible I just simply want him to be sexed up by Abby?
9. Danny Quinn. How unsurprising that the new lead is male. It took me a while to really like him? Basically, he's a Mary Sue who comes in and Saves the Day and is all Alpha Male I Am Right, and, um... Whether he's right or not, it was really fucking annoying. ok, and I maybe slash him a little with Becker, but only if Abby doesn't want Becker first. (I'm pretty certain I would have liked Danny better if he'd been a she. Or, twist, he was a she who was now a he? Also, I bet the fandom would have hated her on sight)
I do think the show has a bad habit with side-lining the women in favor of the men being action heroes (it sort of tries more than it did?), and barely anyone has a life outside of work. I think they're all really not that bright, unfortunately, since Helen gets into the ARC like four times and also manages to set off a bomb inside (all in this one season!). Not to mention Christine's surveillance (which led to the boyslashy bit where Becker is letting Danny break in and then Danny mentions the camera Becker never installed and the two just look at each other, then go hunting up more cameras--ok, and there was the 'toy soldier' bit, too.)
Otoh, there is an episode where they kill dinosaur birds wearing 50's formal wear. And the girls rip their dresses "great for dancing, lousy for cross-country" <3
I think the show tried to do a better job with people of color, but I'm not sure it actually managed it (at least Sarah is still alive).
And the series ended on a ridiculously hilarious cliff-hanger. At least now they know who killed the kids in valley 333. =D
My demands for series 4:
BRING BACK CLAUDIA.
Let Helen stay dead.
Abby/Connor/Becker locked in a closet at some point.
Sarah taking over as team leader, since there's no way to retrieve Danny.
Don Warrington asRassilon the new liaison with the military, who has some sort of agenda, but ends up being on the side of good.
(I expect none of that to happen)

I remember the show fondly without any desire to catch up on everything. Sort of like Robin Hood which lost me mid S2 as well. Short attention span or just want the new shiny?

Seriously?

Heh. That reminds me of in "Another Life", when Owen asks Megan to invite him in, and she's like "Like a vampire?", and he's all "Brr. Don't even joke," indicating that he's met vampires. And the website says there's an unstakeable one stored in cryo-freeze in the Hub. Or was, rather.
