Hrm.

1. I have thoughts on things I need to think about more (mostly, it was something I said to [livejournal.com profile] aj about St. Trinian's and Afterlife never apologizing for being FEMALE, and that... disturbs me on some level--not that they should, but that it makes me wonder how many female characters are written with some sort of 'I'm sorry I'm a chick and not a guy' thing going on, which is an odd thing to think, I think??--like, Eastwick and Fringe don't do it; and now I don't even know if that's the flavor/words I'm looking for, meh).

2. Just for the record, if you've never read any good femslash, and you say (or agree with) things like "I've read a lot and it all seems emotionless" etc., etc., it makes those of us who write it less likely to bother doing so again. So fuck you very much. (shockingly, I've never read any good boyslash, but you don't see me going around claiming it's all shit and unemotional porn OH WAIT.) [also, I'm sure I've made this point before. hrm] eta3: in the cold light of morning, my sarcasm is back to normal, and may I say that this sort of attitude actually makes me want to write femslash more, just to clog up the internets.

3. Avoiding metafandom keeps me from punching people over the internet.

4: eta: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKeA3-n27t8 <--if this doesn't make you O.o or giggle, I don't know what will.

5. eta2. Sophie Deveraux was head girl at St. Trinian's in 19-mumble-mumble. Trufax.

1. That is an interesting thought. I think I know what you're going for, but I don't think I could articulate it either. They are unapologetic about being female. I've not seen Afterlife, but for St. Trinian's I think, maybe, it's that it's a story where the girls get all the good parts and all the glory and there is no guy there to take over and be in charge. Flash helps out, but he is very much working for the girls. IDK. I'm not sure I'm saying this right, but I think I know what you mean.

2. People say that? What am I saying, of course they say that. Anything to get away from the icky girlparts.

3. The place is like a drug.

1. *nods* Yes, that. AHAHAH.

2. Yeah. I mean, to be fair, there is some really bad femslash out there. BUT. sigh.

1. I think [livejournal.com profile] aj said it better below me, but yes.

2. I found the post after reading your comment and yeah the OP kinda needed a kick. The sheer number of people popping in with recs for both fics and fandoms with large femslash contingents made it very clear that the OP had just never really bothered to look. I got the impression that she was expecting people to pop up and commiserate with her on how boring and hard to find femslash was and instead got an outpouring of femslash love.

1. I actually know what you mean. It's like there isn't a stigma for the women going on and doing their thing. There aren't consequences for them making their own decisions or living their lives outside of the normal ones. There isn't an underlying smirky tone or feeling of allowance. There isn't a shame to emotion or feminine reactions or reactions considered inherently female. It's like "Yes, this is how this is and this is how this works. AND? Your point?"

Is that right? Closer?

To me it's really undefinable. Kind of like how In Plain Sight has such an incredible female structure and short hand to it. It feels like there were women involved in the process who left their mark and made something that is, rather than something that goes out of its way to be FEMALE or blows it off or mocks it.

Undefinable. Exactly. And IPS, yes. Sigh. <3

1.- Really, can't we just be PEOPLE??? I mean, I grew up watching the Muppets, and didn't give a kwoi about what they were, they were just cool, so why can't adults grow up and just let people be the awesome that they already are and stop complaining about how steak doesn't taste like chicken and chicken doesn't taste like steak??? :P

4.- Giggling at the thought of that very scenario possibly happening for real. Heehee... And giggling about how I blasted that very Metallica song in my High School's parking lot on FULL BLAST through the terrifying power of my little Hyundai's absurdly over-powered sound system...you couldn't hear yourself yell within 15 feet of it. :D

1. Because the portrayal of women still sucks in a lot of places. Same for minorities.

4. Heheh.

[identity profile] samstareagle.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
I know...annoying...:( Hey, those people are X, so of course, they HAVE to have stories that deal with them NOT being something else.

Aliens would find this culture utterly incomprehensible.

I'd be down with that. I'm also fond of Sophie dumping Parker there for some reason. =D

1. Maybe it's the whole thing where they're writing them as 'women' first rather than as 'people' (for the shows that HAVE the 'excuse us, we're sorry to be women' feel). And, like has been said, it's also hard to really quantify. sigh.

2. YES. Yes, they do. Usually while explaining that they don't hate women or the idea of femslash. Sigh.

[identity profile] ijemanja.livejournal.com 2010-02-03 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
1. I think I get this, but I'm not sure how much of that is perception from audience/fandom, which has such different standards for men and women, and how much is actually there in the writing?

2&3. Yeah, I went back to metafandom today and immediately wished I hadn't. 'All the femslash I've read is X, therefore all femslash is X, obviously, but I really wish it weren't because I would totally read it otherwise because I really do like the females, really, see me saying how much I like them?' SHUT UP. Ugh. There are a lot of femslashers out there who like reading and writing femslash. Either that person's opinion is wrong or we're all bad writers/unsophisticated plebs who will read anything.

5. Hah. And naturally I want Sophie-at-girls-school fic now.

(Edited comment because finishing my thoughts is important!)

1. That's the other thing, how much of it IS perception? How much because I take a liking to something or don't? Sigh.

2/3. If they're right, I shall bulldoze them with mountains of femslash. The more they whine, the happier I shall be.

5. I, um, have notes. It involves Parker and Sophie and Hardison getting hacked after trying to hack the St. Trinian's servers. (no good can come of that, Alec) (but the "OMG WHAT WAS I THINKING?" St. Trinian's/Children of Earth crossover is getting written first)

I'm kind of in love with the movie, though I can't get the theme song out of my head now. Also. Several femslash possibilities. Awesome.

The theme song is a complete and utter earwig. The femslash possibilities are fantastic. Why doesn't this movie have a bigger fandom?
