Travel Preparations
by ALC Punk!

The problem with having a dragon living in one's castle was that the dragon ate rather a lot more than the normal human did. It was a strain on resources as well as purse strings.

"Questing again?" Sir Samuel watched his wife pack her saddlebags, and wondered a little wistfully, how long she'd be at it, this time. It wasn't that he didn't want Kara going without him, or thought she'd be in danger, but that he missed her when she was gone.

Those long months while she stalked treasure and saved villages would be filled with books and the ghost, conversations with Marigold and food when he remembered it. But they would be lonely, in the end.

"I picked up some rumors of a ship that ground ashore in the wilds of Picon," she replied, stopping to look at him. "We could use the salvage rights, Sam."

The wilds of Picon were racked with storms and choppy seas. Few dared to try to round that cape close to land, as those who did rarely made it safely. A shipwreck might provide enough gold to last them several years. And it might not.

"Bring me back some books," he suggested, trying not to sound like he was whining.

Kara finished tying off one of the packs and straightened, looking at him for a moment. "I could." She moved towards him, eyes sparkling with something he couldn't quite name. "Or you could come with me and get them yourself. Cally and Hilliard can run the castle just fine without you."

It wasn't as though he did any of the daily routine, anyway.

But Sam hadn't taken to the road in several years, and he'd never done the kind of fighting that Kara did. He could defend himself, but he knew she was better than him (they'd sparred often enough, usually leading to sex).

"I'll slow you down."

"The storms will slow me down," she countered, moving closer, her eyes still sparkling.

Sam realized a little too late just how close she was when her hands tugged at his belt, then pushed him back against the desk. "I'll be dead-weight."

"I like you as dead-weight," she teased, pressing up against him.

Grabbing the desk, he pushed back, not surprised at the way her eyes darkened as she stared up at him. "Are you trying to seduce me into going with you?"

"Maybe." Her lips stretched into a smirk and she rose onto her toes, nuzzling his neck. "Maybe," she murmured, licking a line down his neck over his pulse (and making his breath catch), "and maybe I'm just trying to seduce you."

He chuckled, hands moving to her waist. Turning, he lifted her up onto the desk, glad she hadn't put on her traveling clothes yet. Her nightgown would be easy enough to sweep out of his way. "Seducing me, huh?" He kissed her shoulder through the cotton, then her neck, feeling her wriggle and make a grumpy sound when that was all he did.

Stroking his hands down her sides, he caught at her gown, slowly pulling it up as he moved his mouth to hers. She kissed him hungrily, her fingers tugging at his collar, then going to his belt.

Concentrating on what he was about, Sam worked his way down her body, kissing and sucking at her skin through the material of her gown before he tugged it away, baring her breasts for his mouth. She arched against him, fingers pushing through his hair until she was breathless and growling softly, her leg hooking around his waist.

"If you had a dagger," he teased, licking her nipple one last time before straightening and sliding between her legs, the gown bunched around her waist, "You could threaten me."

A laugh escaped her, and she brought up her other leg so he could stroke his fingers down her calf. He found the knife bound around her ankle and chuckled. "I don't need a knife to encourage you, Sam," she pointed out, slowly leaning back, her breasts distracting him from his thoughts.

It was a good point, he decided absently as he finished tugging his belt free and got his trousers out of the way.

Kara's leg curved around his waist as he pulled her against him, sliding easily into her. They'd done this before, Sam bent over her, mouth on her breasts. Kara liked kneeling over him, sometimes, her head back as his hands on her waist were all that kept her from over-balancing and taking them both to the ground.

He realized, as he quickened the pace, enjoying the sounds she was making as her fingers dug into his shoulders, that he was trying to imprint the moment on himself, store up the memory of her until she returned.

It was sweet, but rather sad and pathetic at the same time.

Pushing deep, he claimed her mouth with his, drinking down her cry of completion before he kissed her cheek and temple, slowing a little as he murmured, "I will come with you."

"A bit late," she panted, fingernails pressing into his skin through his shirt.

He laughed and pulled away before thrusting back, feeling her grunt in surprise as he tried to coax more from her before he was spent.

Afterwards, she rubbed the back of his neck with teasing pressure, a lazy smile on her lips. "Trying to wear me out and convince me not to go?" she asked softly.

Sam shifted a little, propping himself up on an elbow and grateful for the size of the desk. "Nope." He kissed the hollow of her throat, then scrambled off of her and started rummaging in a drawer. "How light do I have to pack?"

"The essentials, Sam," Kara instructed, turning on her side and pulling her legs out of his way.

He caressed her in passing, then got busy with the nonsense of deciding what was essential and what could be left behind. Kara would deal with the weapons, he'd deal with the astrolabe and books. Not that he'd bring any, if he could help it. They were heavy, annoying things.

Besides, the storms in Picon would be detrimental to his references.

A pencil bounced across his desk and they both ignored it, though Sam brightened considerably. He'd already done enough testing to know that their resident ghost would not be following them on their journey. Just the thought made him start whistling, which caused Kara to snicker at him.

Sam didn't manage to continue his packing for at least another two hours, and they'd managed to make it to the daybed in his study by then.

*giggles* Thank you =D

Leoben is the resident ghost, and while he doesn't really do much here, he is probably a voyeur.

Heehee... Oh the silliness you can have with this...:)

(BTW, I know LJ's been wonky for everybody as of late...did you get a PM I sent to you? No rush, just wondering if the site's working or not...)

Y'know, I had totally forgotten about the first fic of Kara and Sam getting a pet dragon when you said that. But, yay, mention of a food shortage. Haha. They really don't think things through...

Aww, fluff! And, hehehe, Kara wearing a knife around her ankle to bed and Sam loving books = <3. (What exactly does Cally do in their castle, anyway? And yeah, what [livejournal.com profile] merrykk said, what does Leoben have to do with this?)

Ahahah. Well, there would be food shortages, and castles don't pay for themselves!

Cally is a maid, I think, though that could easily change to being, like, Sam's distant cousin who had nowhere else to live or something. And Leoben is the ghost, who has a thing for Kara. ;)

Thank you!

I'm quite fond of it, too.
