lyssie: (Alice Carter is not impressed)

Look out, there might be opinions here.

1. Here's why I'm pissed and bitter about Eastwick.

Fandom: we'd pay more attention to female characters if they were well-written!
Eastwick: has three excellently-written female leads and three excellently-written female secondary characters + one more who is near-secondary status and ALSO female. (and Paul Gross splendidly chewing the scenery)
Fandom: I'm not interested in that sort of thing.
Eastwick: gets canceled in favor of a show with men having all the plotlines and one token cardboard cut-out female character.
Fandom: OMG SO AWESOME TEH PRETTY GAY.
Me: ...and this is why we can't have nice things.

(feel free to insert TSCC in there)

eta: Sorry, folks, if I'd been paying attention to my wording last night, I would have added this addendum: it hasn't been canceled, but it has been pulled from Hulu and ABC's site (the full episodes are gone, so you can't actually watch it). Which says to me that ABC is planning to quietly dump it.

2. Meanwhile, apparently the Bridge Boyz still don't take criticism well. You go, Ms. Ryan, even if I don't always agree with you.

3. Paul Gross gave a recent interview, and mentioned that he didn't get vampires. Truth to tell, I've never understood why people are so slavishly devoted to how AWESOME AND OMG SO COOL they are, myself.

4. I have put my c key back on, though it still pops off annoyingly. I suppose I'll live with it (I have for four months).

5. It was very hazy today. But not humid. Very odd. Anyone know if there's a zombie apocalypse coming?

Gah. I'm sorry, I was too tired to add in that it hasn't, YET, but I have the feeling it will be, since ABC pulled it from Hulu and their site (full episodes for viewing).

It got canceled? I thought it was beating Leno on it's night?

[identity profile] tafkarfanfic.livejournal.com 2009-11-09 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, most weeks Leno is beating it. In fact, it's the only show getting beaten by Leno.

I love the show, but the general public does not appear to feel the same.

*facepalm* I should have paid attention to my wording and added in that it isn't canceled yet, though I do think it's going to be.

What's the other show you're talking about?

(And ugh, don't remind me about TSCC. *still bitter*)

The general male-led type that clog the tv tubes right now? I don't actually know for certain that it's been canceled, but it's been pulled from Hulu and full episodes can no longer be viewed at abc.com.

TSCC certainly fits my annoyance, though, even if I loathed John.

What did Eastwick get cancelled in favor of?

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-11-10 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I'm assuming it will be, and since women obviously don't attract audiences (and Jay Leno does), they'll switch it up and put on something with loads of men (that does tend to kill in the ratings, after all.)

[identity profile] scifiaddict86.livejournal.com 2009-11-09 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
I really hated the movie so I had no interest in Eastwick. Plus after sitting through one to many years of Charmed I had no interest in hollywood WitchCraft. Like Vampires its one of those things that just doesn't interest me. That and I swore I wasn't going to fall for another show only to have it cancelled out from under me (Like Jericho. Termintator and Kings) so I waited before getting into anything I thought was risky.

I was thinking about that list of vendors that advertise during the show and pondering writing them. I don't think it would actually help.

But then, I'm mostly paranoid and cynical.

What would POSSIBLY matter is finding out who the hell we need to bombard at ABC about it.

For instance, I just revisited one of my favorite female character authors, and found the resolution to her plots so disgustingly anti-feminist on reflection that now I cannot see how I ever could have stood her. But her female characters were fantastically written for the first 3/4 of her books, and I dearly wish I could write them endings they deserved.

And now I'm dying to know who you're talking about.

Well written characters aren't the only thing that matters in a show

But that's the excuse people use time and again for why they don't write female characters/hate them/judge them/what have you. "If they were only well-written!"

Well. Here's a show with well-written characters who are female.

And you're right, we shouldn't have only one show. But networks are never EVER going to produce more until there's a market that shows women/fandom/whatever will support a show that has women as leads and main characters.

In the end, it's not about producing good tv, just what sells.

What it got canceled? I'm going to go cry now.

It's been pulled from Hulu and full episodes can no longer be viewed from abc.com. My math is shaky, but that usually says cancellation. (Defying Gravity went that way, too, iirc)

Seriously, it got cancelled? I mean, I'm way behind on my TV watching, so I've only watched a couple of episodes, but it was cracky and full of female characters, and that's pretty much all I need in a show. Damn :(

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-11-10 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm expecting it to be, given the ratings drop by half the viewers every week, and it's been pulled from Hulu and abc.com no longer hosts episodes to watch in full.

[identity profile] tafkarfanfic.livejournal.com 2009-11-09 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way about Eastwick. But to be fair, TONS of people in my corner of fandom (old SG-1 fandom, many of whom were also Due South fans) are loving the show.

Good. I'm torn between wishing it were on Skiffy and wondering if the falling ratings would still kill it there.

Drat. I was enjoying Eastwick.

I'm sorry, I didn't manage to disclaimer my post (and now have egg on my face). I don't know that it's been canceled, but it's been pulled from Hulu and abc.com no longer supports full episodes. (not to mention the ratings have been falling--viewers cut 50% almost every week)

[identity profile] ellestra.livejournal.com 2009-11-09 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry. I feel for you as sometimes I think that all I like is canceled or on the verge of it. And shows that are an insult to intelligence thrive on and on and on.

My watching doesn't matter anyway (but it might in few months) but I still wouldn't watch Eastwick. It's just not my kind of show. I tried with the pilot but without spaceships (I can forgive much for cool spaceships - e.g. that's all I remember from Virtuality pilot) or something like that it just felt too much like a Gilmore Girls (only with more real, grown up women) kind of show. Something I could watch if it happened to be on TV when I'm home but not really follow. I never watched Supernatural for the same reason. I've seen the pilot and judged it too boring (killing female characters don't help).

I prefer SF to any other shows and thus forgive them much more but not enough to watch new Stargate. Somehow pretty boys don't make up for plot. And I need a female character to get attached to and the more awesome she is the more attached to the show I get and if there is more then one... That's why I miss TSCC so much - there was hard SF and awesome females (robots included) - all the things I like.

The problem is that most people don't want to think when they watch tv. They just want to see chicks in skimpy outfits and explosions and fart jokes (and if they can manage a sexually-displayed dead body or two, even better).

Or so I'd have to guess.

I'm beginning to think I should take over the world, at this rate.
