The original definition was for female characters who were killed/depowered to let the menfolk aaaaaaaangst for them. Because, of course, that's the only use women have as characters.
Lately, it's been expanded to occasionally accept male characters (Sam, for instance).
I don't think you can fridge men. Yes, you can kill them, depower them, etc. However, you can't fridge them because they aren't an oppressed peoples. Just like there's no such thing as reverse-racism.
