my life is boring

1. Watched part of an episode of Castle. Enough to discover Kate Beckett is Yet Another Cookie Cutter 'strong' woman with a stick up her ass who has no power, and is there to be an obstacle to the Awesome Male Lead who swans all over the place being an asshole. Ugh.

2. Have not watched either NCIS. Please try not to spoil me.

3. I was so bored at work today, I seriously contemplated the steps it would take to orchestrate an inter-fandom wank war. The difficulty would be getting innocent people involved who might be hurt, since it was really all in fun.

4. Finally managed to edit something for posting.

eta: 5. WHY IS THERE NOT A FIONA GLENANNE ACTION FIGURE? Or a Ziva. There should be a Ziva.

Huh. I should have known there was a reason I didn't watch past the pilot. Glad to know I made the right call.

An inter-fandom wank war? What fandoms?

That is a.. two-minute reaction wherein I had a lot of eye-rolling...

And I do not know! Perhaps BSG vs Farscape vs SGs vs Firefly vs Star Wars vs Who.... Oh, it could be glorious.

[identity profile] bluediamond421.livejournal.com 2009-09-23 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, so does that mean you changed your mind? lol.

That could be....interesting.....now I want to know what the steps you came up with are. heh.

Which Stargate series is better? I am taking a poll, to try to figure out which one to watch first.

No? I just didn't exactly watch an entire episode.

And I am not asking the SG question!

[identity profile] bluediamond421.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
So you like them both equally? lol.

(I discovered the fullscreen option! So my Sam/Kara video will be in fullscreen instead of widescreen. :D)

I have always meant to ask you, who is Avon and why do you ship him/her with Cally?
ext_18106: (Kara and Sam are in loooooooove)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
No. I go back and forth. SG had less women and less awful plots. Atlantis had more women and more marginalization of them. I categorically assume SGU is going to be shittastic.

(yay!)

Blake's 7. It's an old British SF show where they're thieves and resistance fighters and con men. Avon is the coldly-calculating computer expert; Cally is the telepathic resistance member with a deathwish. Together, they fight crime! Or at least blow Federation outposts up a bit.

[identity profile] bluediamond421.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. Hmm. Should I not watch either of them? lol. (SGU is not even an option for me from what I have heard of it.)

(Also, I will finally have ICONS now, with the fullscreen clips!)

Ohhh, so it's not a crossover ship with BSG's Cally? That's what I was thinking. What about Cally/Leela (from Doctor Who, right?)? Which Cally is that? lol.
ext_18106: (Default)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say... give 'em a chance? They aren't awful, and they're mindless popcorn fluff along the lines of Supernatural and Psych, really.

Cally/Leela is Cally from Blake's 7 and Leela from Doctor Who, yup. =D

eta: also, Avon would eat wee!Cally from BSG for breakfast, though he'd appreciate her electrical/mechanical skills.

Well, okay, maybe I will. Then I can read your fic about them, also, anyway. (I love your fics.)

Haha. Well, I did not know there was another Cally.

YES.

Thank you for articulating why I can't quite get into Castle. I wanted to, I really did. I even watched the season premier yesterday hoping it had gotten better since the two episodes I watched last season. Because I adore Nathan Fillion to pieces, and even thought Castle's an asshat I do think he's played brilliantly.

But I never really gave it more than I glance, and I could never put my finger on it. And this is totally it.

Which I think is one of the things I enjoyed about the Good Wife. Title issues aside, the pilot episode was basically everyone assuming she was some poor little politician's wife, a tool of her husband, etc. And then she went around and proved how she was 10 times more awesome than all of them.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I wish it wasn't so obviously painfully bad tripe in that regard. Sigh.

I rec'd the Good Wife to my co-workers today =D

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2009-09-23 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I watched only one episode of Castle. For a guest character. The rest of it was not really that watchable. Between, as you say, the emasculated (efeminated?) female lead, and the cliche "spoiled rich meddling matron" mother.
ext_18106: (Default)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
....ew. I'm glad I didn't get to the second one.

Ziiiiiiiiiivaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. ♥♥

Ugh at your Castle descript. :| Haven't seen it, am now wary.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
She would be a great action figure! You could have her terrorize John Sheppard, for instance.

[identity profile] qwirky.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
And have her drink tea with Lizzie! <3<3<3 *approves of this*

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2009-09-23 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
You pointed out the main issue I have with Castle. The other issue is that I'm just not a big fan of procedurals. So, as much as I love Nathan, I just can't bring myself to give that show another try.

I just wish writers would realize JANE TENNYSON DID IT ALREADY and move on from that ridiculous trope of "women have it hard in a maaaaaaaaaan's world". sigh.

1. I like that show and Beckett despite myself. :/ Although she does own Castle at regular intervals, so at least there's that.

2. You shall have to tell me what you think when you do watch. We watched the new LA show too.

5. YES TO BOTH OF THESE. Fiona could come with a tiny brick of C4. Or twelve. <3

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
1. I did not say there was a lack of souls... I just find the trope tiresome and wish they'd get another for female cops. I miss the days of Kate Todd and Susan Taylor.

2. I am sure there will be flailing.

5. Fi comes with blocks of c4 and detonators that are hidden in strange places. =D

[identity profile] miera-c.livejournal.com 2009-09-23 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That was why I didn't bother to watch Castle when it started. I saw the promos and thought exactly that and decided life was too short, even for Nathan Fillion.

I was hoping it would be good for the female characters (NF I can take or leave), but. sigh. If I want that sort of pain, I will watch the Wheeler episodes of Criminal Intent.

As I mentioned upthread, I didn't watch more than two minutes. the problem is, I'm so very very tired of this stereotypical female character. There's a REASON I stopped watching Criminal Intent when the new guy basically did the same thing to Megan Wheeler. I <3 Wheeler and I <3 Eames and I tolerate Bobby, but there is only so much of the "Man's World!" bullcrap I can take.

(NCIS has its share of sexist stuff, but it also nails it as a Bad Thing, generally)

(and I'm sorry, but Laura Roslin would not go whine to her boss about the press. Laura Roslin would distract them with her awesome)

[identity profile] stealth-rose.livejournal.com 2009-09-23 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
2. Have not watched either NCIS. Please try not to spoil me.

ZOMG BUT ZIVA IS BRAINWASHED AND STARTS WORKING AGAINST MOSSAD. SHE KEELS HER FATHER AND ANYONE WITHIN SIGHT.

...okay, maybe not. *ducks and runs*

eta: 5. WHY IS THERE NOT A FIONA GLENANNE ACTION FIGURE? Or a Ziva. There should be a Ziva.

*runs back in*
Because they would kick all the other action figures' asses and we can't have that.

*runs away again*

You know what's really sad? Your fake NCIS spoiler would have been way better than the Tony Exposition Show we got.

1. I don't know about that to Beckett feels real which is always my main litmus test for a character. Having worked in an oppressively male workplace the way a majority of police forces still are I can say while Beckett is not perhaps the ultimate feminist role model she is what tends to survive those environments. As a smaller probably somewhat sheltered young woman she probably did sacrifice a lot of power and femininity to prove herself. I think its realstic for someone like her to be somewhat befuddled by Castle not every woman is HBIC I think its good that TV reflects that. Personally the Sassy Black coroner bugs me more but that's a whole different set of un fortunate implications.(and some of thats the actress)

Plus Castle gets called on his asshat moments a lot its subtle some of the time but in a lot of ways thats the point of the show that Castle is trying to grow up.

2 I liked NCIS and I think NCIS LA has potential.

3. Ah what's really fun about that is how easy it would be with some people a sock puppet id and the right fuel to the fire and then sit back with a bag of marshmallows. Although the potential collateral damage is always what stops me since I've been burned by that shit far to often previously.

4. Yeah I am so proud of finally busting my writers block lately I am even posting on peoples stuff again.

5. Yes we need NCIS action figures Ziva for sure and Gibbs with a cup of coffee a stack of DVDs for Tony and McGee and his laptop.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
1. Sigh. I really don't think we need even more "women can't succeed in a maaaaaaaaan's world" bullcrap. Also, if she isn't an hbic, please go tell the people who have consistently voted for her in the hbic poll at [livejournal.com profile] frolicndetour's lj, as they haven't seem to've gotten the memo.

5. Abby would come with Caf-Pow and a mini Major Mass-Spec. =D

[identity profile] scifiaddict86.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
1. That's not really what the show is saying because Kate is successful. I think its simply a more realistic portrayal of someone who is successful in a field like that. It's something that sometimes bugs on shows (like In Plain Sight) that show women who in reality probably would have been bounced out of law enforcement the first week. As someone who has had to work in a heavily male dominated environment (a hydro plant) I find it more offensive when shows say that women only survive in those situations if they are amazing at their jobs and are all things to all people. I think it great that Kate is actually a fairly normal woman who has succeeded at a tough job even if she has had to compromise along the way.

6. That's exactly what Abby would carry and Ducky would just come with Jimmy.
