Dragon Con report: 2009
First, I would like to apologize to anyone who had to listen to me whine about money. It was exceedingly hilarious to me, but most certainly read as whining to everyone else.
The following is as much of a chronological thing as I could manage, omg. And I'm sure I've forgotten people (sorry!)
Thursday.
1. Travel day! Got up way too early and trundled down to airport to fly south.
2. Checked in, checked with people, lazed around hotel room. Ate, did more poking around and talking to people and being amused at the large number already in costume (Thursdays might need to be Official Con Days from now on). Then it was time to go kidnap
palmetto from the bus station (got some notes jotted down on the Pryde&Dresden&Lockley fic that's been languishing).
3. Once we'd dropped off her stuff, we headed to the Sheraton to get our badges. Tried to get through the Registration line that was closed a half hour before they bothered to tell anyone. Really epic incompetent fail on their part. Sending someone out to stand at the end with a sign would have been efficient and caused less annoyance. Assholes. (yes, I'm still pissed about it, my feet ached from standing so long for no fucking reason)
4. Don't know what else we did, I know we were up pretty late, though. Then there was sleeeeeeeeeeep!
Friday.
1. The following two bits happened in the morning and then at some point during the day (possibly while dressing for the Time Traveler's Ball, on the latter) Watched Old Married Couple hour w/Shatner and Nimoy. Watched repeat of Friday's BSG panel AND OMG Trucco and Kandyse fake made-out. It was glorious.
2. Registration! Stood in line for hour and a half, was unimpressed at the splitting of the alphabet (again).
3. I know I met people. I know there were conversations! I just don't... remember who it all was. Off the top of my head:
frolicndetour,
nicole_anell,
greycoupon,
asta77,
karma_aster,
havocthecat,
triciabyrne1978,
deaniebtvs,
seldear,
samstareagle (in a costume I failed at recognizing, it was culinary-related) and probably others I don't remember. I know I met other people who might HAVE ljs--oh, and
gdg, whose hand I shook and whose art I complimented ... I know I managed to pass
sabaceanbabe and
rebelliousrose about seven times in the hallways over the weekend.
4. Ran down to dealer's room for metal chopsticks for faux-steampunk-ish outfit for Time Traveler's Ball. Watched BSG panel while getting ready.
Time Traveler's Ball was a bust. Really packed and we weren't waiting around in line for it to empty out. Roommates went wandering and I ended up on the 10th floor of the Marriott with Havoc, Tricia, Mr. Havoc,
palmetto,
greycoupon,
nicole_anell, Karma and some others including the drunk dude who agreed with Mr. Havoc that chicks need dicks to understand Heinlein.
10th floor had a free wifi server somewhere nearby, so we leached off that for a while.
Tricia forced people to watch the first episode of Leverage. And by forced, I mean seduced.
We were up there a long time, saying silly things and being random and having a blast. Sadly, we eventually went to bed. Though I seem to recall watching a lot of DCTV until we turned it off, then giggling like small children until we passed out around 4ish...
Saturday.
The most important thing I remember about Saturday is that Trucco liked my "C-bucs Rule" shirt.
Ok, no, there were other things...
2. BSG panel. I ended up sitting with a bunch of people in line, who then proceeded to ignore me once inside the room. Luckily, I managed to find a decent spot next to the raised camera platform without their help.
Someone asked Trucco what he would have liked Sam to say to Kara at the end, there. His initial response was "Get me a towel and get me the hell out of here". Then he waxed rhapsodic while leaning forward and sort of mumbling about how 'see you on the other side' was the perfect summation of their looove and Kara and Sam have connective tissue and some other things I don't quote remember other than that Sam loved her so much and she loved him back and maybe something about how he and Katee were sort of saying goodbye there, too. It was adorable, hard to hear, and DORKY AS HELL. omg. Trucco. <3.
Mary M commented on how isolated (from other women) the women of BSG were and said she found it fascinating. Not the word I'd use, but it's nice that she noticed it.
If you're an Aaron Douglas fan, you should find a new idol. He's an asshole. He crashed the panel, and proceeded to inform the audience that his favorite scene was strangling Tory (to audience cheers) and that he'd fought to have that put in, because he knew the fans would love it. The audience cheered more.
I'm not sure I can put into words how disgusting that was.
My own reaction was "he's joking, right?" followed by "why aren't I with Allie and Nicole so we can boo loudly?" followed by disgust and horror at the audience reaction.
I'm told that Kate and Mary looked annoyed/upset about it, and that Mary confirmed later that the whole thing was disturbing to her. So, yay, on that score. Unfortunately, I now think AD is an asshole, but so is every person in the audience who cheered. Why I can't kill people with my mind remains an unsolved and sad mystery. :/
Which is most of what I remember from that panel, other than that Kate and Mary are so totally adorable and them sitting with Luciana next to them made me have happy thoughts about them taking over the world.
3. Once the panel was out, I headed for the Hyatt, though I don't remember why anymore (maybe the Babylon Five panel?), and the entire Marquis tower and the walkway into the food court were packed with the line for the Patrick Stewart panel. I'm sure he's a nice guest, but, wow, would I not be out there. I wanted to punch some of them for being obnoxious.
4. I suspect this was when I went to the B5 panel, and discovered that Tracy Scoggins is UTTERLY ADORABLE and a geek. She used to carry around a picture of Leonard Nimoy in her pocketbook as a small child. YOU GUYS. I liked Lochley before (she was competent and mocked Garibaldi, how could I not?), but now I adore her. The panel moderator sucked a bit, and Claudia Christian was also pretty awesome. They all joked about 'nuking Half-pint' in regards to Melissa Gilbert being Anna Sheridan. And some creepy dude said something that made Tracy S go "I take back what I said about smart men being into science fiction." <3
Someone also asked Tracy what it was like to work with Teri Hatcher on Lois and Clark, and her reply was, "If your doctor says you have six months to live, spend it in Metropolis."
And Claudia brought up the Talia/Susan thing, claiming it was revenge because she objected to early story ideas of Susan sleeping around with a bunch of men--Susan was dedicated to her career, after all! She also ships Susan/G'Kar.
5. At some point, we hit the walk of fame and saw Trucco and some of the others (I don't know how much time went between events, though) from a distance. I got in line for Trucco with the others despite the lack of cash for a signature or photo (which I did not explain, as I'm sure he wouldn't be interested). I got to shake his hand and tell him how awesome he is, and to thank him for being in BSG (essentially what I said to Tricia, but with less stuttering). He has the most amazing smile, and utterly LOVED the t-shirt I was wearing, apparently. He'd spotted it before it was my turn and was all smiley about it. <3
6. I'm pretty sure somewhere in here is also when we managed to run
waterdaughter to ground and hung out in the Hilton. Some dude tried to pick her up and when that failed moved to the other couch to chat up
arrshley. (dear fanboys, when trying to pick up women, TRY NOT TO BE SO OBVIOUS about it. *snickers*)
7. Then it was a wander back to the room and a change into my jingly skirt, because I wanted to head to the BSG fleet party... which was a bust. So packed they weren't letting people in, and there was no fucking point in hanging around for it, so. Yeah. I know I ran into wisteria (who was probably confused at my airy, "I'm waiting for someone" as I was beginning to get "OMG I HATE LINES AND PEOPLE" about things) before I headed out of the ridiculously awful line and called
waterdaughter to find out what was up with her (she'd been planning to go).
8.
waterdaughter said they were down in gaming, having heard that no one was being let into the party. At that point, I prodded (or was prodded by)
cujoy, and convinced her that gaming was far more interesting. =D
It was, actually. We played some Werewolf (kinda, um, boringish, but not awful). And then.... And then we played the BSG board game for four hours. It was awesome. I was Gaius and kept having to save the frakking ship. I mean, seriously, I should have been COWERING IN A CORNER. And yet, there I was, fixing things and jumping us and launching vipers. We were screwed, though, because Kara, Helo and Lee were sekrit cylons.
We tried! It was a valiant attempt, but we ended up getting a no-win crisis and the humans lost. Sigh.
So, yes, it is possible to play that game. It just takes tiiiiiime.
9. Fell into bed around 5 am.
Sunday.
1. Slept in a bit, since I was going to meet my sister for lunch. She called as I was waiting for the elevator to reschedule for Monday. Heh. Went back and traded my jeans for my skirt. Don't have a clue what I did from then until I met up with
palmetto for the SG Megapanel--there was food! I think.
2. Got volunteered to help with the SG charity auction which got decent seats at the panel (even though they almost didn't let the staff people from the SG TRACK in.... idiots). Then they were over-crowded at the auction and so I sat in the back.
Panel: Rachel is still utterly gorgeous, I get the impression Ben and Claudia are still very much "those Farscape people", and Jason Momoa is gorgeous but needs to speak up. The Flan was late which caused Rachel to ostentatiously take his seat and Jason to shove the chair under the table, which was amusing. I have no notes on this panel, so I don't really remember much other than a lot of laughter.
Auction: I'll be honest. People spending money like that makes me supremely uncomfortable, I don't care WHAT the proceeds are going towards. Watching Paul McGillion and then Colin Cunningham was enjoyable, however, and I was sitting with
deaniebtvs, so it wasn't all bad.
Afterwards, found Havoc and Mr. Havoc and Tricia, which led us all back over to the SG panel room.
3. There was... I don't know. I know there was wandering and talk and the dealer's room again. And then I ended up eating with
palmetto and
rebelliousrose and talking for a while until she had to go and I wanted to get back to the SG room for the SG Women panel...
4. I'll be honest, I know that we were being loud in the corner and knocking balloons around. BUT. Seriously? The panel hadn't started, and we were trying to figure out whether Karma and the others needed to eat and were rudely told (ok, the request was made to the room as a whole) to either sit down, or leave. Now. I was wearing my jingly skirt. When in that skirt, I usually do my best not to jingle in quiet areas. Not this time. I pretty much sashayed out, my jingles going as loud as they could.
Yes, I am that petty.
5. We ended up at the Mexican place across from Hard Rock and I ate some cheesecake (OMG GOOD, BUT RICH). Then, I think we ended up back at the Marriott and I was dragging a table around up on 10, so we could do a repeat of Friday night. Unfortunately, the hotel security kicked everyone off that level. *sadface* We ended up in Havoc's room with some of the usual complement and
stef94.
6. Havoc eventually had to sleep, we absconded with
seldear's TimTams and ended up back down by the SG track room under the rotunda. No wireless, sadly. But
serafine_fic treated us to some lovely music until we were all too tired--though I seem to recall a really attractive movie!Wolverine, that might just be the braindeadness talking.
7. Held toast to
musicforcylons with GC, kicked self for not remembering earlier.
8. Bedtime: 4:30ish
Monday.
1. Up early for the Farscape panel. Claudia, Ben and Lani are highly entertaining, and if you ever have a choice between them and someone else? CHOOSE THEM. ETA: I knew I'd forget something. Epona ran me to ground and we sat in the panel together. Sadly, we didn't have time for much else.
2. Ran into
nicole_anell on her way out, tried to catch
frolicndetor, but my sister got their before she arrived. (I'm sorry, hon, I wanted to see you again! :/)
Have I mentioned that Mondays are really depressing. Almost everyone is leaving and the hotels empty out and it's disconcerting and sad. Sigh.
3. Lunch with my sister and nephew. My nephew has my father's hair which cracks me up. We wandered Little Five Points a bit, and poked at Junkman's Daughter (nephew wants EVERYTHING, including sparkly vibrators).
4. Empty hotels. Such weirdness. Saw
palmetto off, then had to run back up to the room and chase after her as she'd left her cell phone charger and Shep behind.
5. I know there was food in there, and hanging with the SG crew and... watching as the rate of atrition culled us to a few. Sigh. But not much else. I hung out with
greycoupon for a while that night.
6. Went to bed at some point. Tuesday was travel day, obviously.
End of con!
Sadly, I got only a few photos as our camera eats batteries like they're going out of style.

ZOMG, that was totally my B5 ship! I didn't think anyone else shipped that...
Claudia, Ben and Lani are highly entertaining
Truthfully, there's no bad combination of Farscape actors. They only seem to come in highly entertaining combinations.

THIS. And I could listen to them talk and joke for hours, they're just that awesome.

I do think the Farscape cast are the most comfortable (with fans) by far, but the B5 cast aren't far behind them.
And I missed meeting some people from lj, but maybe next year!

I get the impression Ben and Claudia are still very much "those Farscape people"
I wonder if part of that, for that particular panel, was that everyone else on it was an SGA person, and there were no other SG1 people?
I don't really remember much other than a lot of laughter.
That basically sums up every SG panel I have been to, EVER. :D
One of these years we'll have to try and meet up!

Oh, yeah, I was thinking about that this morning, and I think it definitely contributed.
One of these years we'll have to try and meet up!
Yes! DC is just... so massive. Meeting everyone never seems possible.

Next year, dammit. I am going to be there come hell or high water.

Gah, I know! We were sadly too busy cringing to boo. I did boo Kevin Grazier one time!
were packed with the line for the Patrick Stewart panel.
I went to one of his panels, though it might have been on Saturday. I was in line for about 15-20 minutes, and that was just the time it took the back of the line to file in. Unless you were there since dawn, I didn't really see the point of waiting that long; you're going to be watching on the screen anyway.
"If your doctor says you have six months to live, spend it in Metropolis."
You left out the best part; "it'll seem a lot longer." ;)
(I'm sorry, hon, I wanted to see you again! :/)
Aw, me too! Next time I'm leaving Tuesday. Though you're right, Monday's are kinda depressing; the whole thing is both too long, with the terrible eating/sleeping habits and way not long enough. :/

I think you would have enjoyed it. =D
