Now that I've conquered the kitchen.

Not to mention the stove. ALSO. If anyone needs a horror background matte, I can take some photos underneath the range top which has obviously never been cleaned.

Anyway. THIS JUST IN. There are women in fandom. BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES. Apparently we didn't exist until Twilight. And Twilight is perfectly geared towards women, which is why we flock to it.

....

Or something. I don't know. I was distracted by dishes and random Cylon weirdness.

I don't know. Some of the commenters think women only read Twilight. So. Might still need the disguise.

God might be bored that day...

OMG! Did we forget to send them the memo?

I think so. And it was on sparkly pink stationary, too! So they wouldn't miss it.

I wish I had Cylons doing my dishes. Although they might break them, so maybe not...

We've only been around in the last five years? I THINK MY CHRONOMETER IS BROKEN THEN.

eta: lol twilight is a 'contemporary myth' wtf

Ryss, we're stuck in a time loop!

Well, we ARE Time Ladies? :D

...dude, that would explain so much.

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2009-08-29 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it would explain why the last 11 years have felt more like, I dunno, four, maybe. :)

[identity profile] ladielazarus.livejournal.com 2009-08-29 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
If myths were frequently written by sexually repressed, grammar deprived 8 year olds, then yes. Myth.

[identity profile] ladielazarus.livejournal.com 2009-08-29 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
What if we were there all along? Like, what if we had been geeks since before Twilight even existed? Wouldn't that be weird?

WE WERE FIGMENTS OF OUR OWN IMAGINATION. Until journalists (male!) and male fans recognize us as the Right Kind of fan, we don't count.

[identity profile] blinovitch.livejournal.com 2009-08-29 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's a function of every "latest skiffy fad" that makes the press think this. Last time, it was Harry Potter drawing the wimminfolk in.

I just wish they'd stop acting surprised about it.

[identity profile] blinovitch.livejournal.com 2009-08-29 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The press's job, even the niche press's, is to act surprised about everything, to maximize fear-mongering and tension.

[identity profile] karma-aster.livejournal.com 2009-08-29 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. That's totally right. Me growing up as a Star Trek, Star Wars, comic book, Doctor Who (oh, Tom Baker, you're still my favorite!), MacGyver, Buck Rogers-lovin' geekling who read everything she could get her little hands on, worshiped at the altar of Buffy and Xena back in the day, and has had a massive crush on Patrick Stewart since the age of seven and will be oh-so-gleeful to see him at DragonCon this year (which I've been attending almost-reguarly since the age of THIRTEEN, for fuck's sake!) was actually cleverly-disguised as a boy for all these years.

Really. The geek thing? Totally just there to help my cover.

But I still wouldn't touch fucking Twilight with a ten-foot pole. Mostly because it offends both my feminist sensibilities and that part of me that gets really annoyed by utterly crap writing.

I know! Our breasts are grafted-on, obvsly.

The sad thing about Twilight is that it's a good gateway drug, but people are treating it like it's a plague. You think the girls who enjoy it won't move on to other things? True Blood? Anita Blake? Lestat?

(and to be fair, I loathe most vampire books, and think Twilight is shit. But that isn't going to be the only thing they'll pick up!)

They will. They'll read anything they can get their hands on. They're not going to just go away when the Twilight fannishness dissipates.

That's like saying those fanboys who flocked to SW never got into anything but SW, which is ridiculous. Though, I do think men tend to be a bit more mono-fannish? Hrm.

[identity profile] dkphoenix.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
But do we WANT them to stick around after the sparkle wears off? :-p

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Something has to balance out the metric fuckton of obnoxious fanboys. And THEY won't go away.

[identity profile] scifiaddict86.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
If there are no women in fandom why do I have twice as many female fandom friends than I do male? This is obviously written by some tool who reviews the odd comic book but hasn't been on a board in ten years.

It's a myth! =D

But, yeah, every year they find a new 'thing' that is making women into 'fans', and make it sound like "OMG THERE WERE NEVER WOMEN BEFORE." bullshit.

Ha! I've been into SF longer than a lot of those idiot fanboys have been alive.

That's it! It's time to create a drinking game for these articles. Or bingo.

[identity profile] ladyniko.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Do it! Do it! We need something like this! :)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
hrm.

Drink if there's a Joss Whedon quote.
Small sip if any variant of the phrase "women were brought in by Buffy" is used.

Drink if there's a reference to Gail Simone.
Double shot if there's a reference to Women in Refrigerators.

Drink if reference is made to Ellen Ripley or Sarah Connor (though the latter now has a modern-day current consciousness reference, so she's easier for them to use as "girls didn't like her until now!")

Drink if Xena is mentioned.

When I saw that post, I wanted to comment with scans from my passes for San Diego and Seattle Comic Cons pre-Twilight.
