more Children of Earth thoughts.
really quick ones.
Gwen makes me love her even more in this by doing something I'm always shouting in movies when people are on the run.
She shoots out the tires of the suv trying to follow them.
Seriously. That is so totally made of awesome.
2. Why can't the 456 just take the kids on their own? Not to mention, how do they think the humans will manage to do it (America has something like 2 million plus to round up, that's going to take more than ONE DAY) in their one day? I just don't see how that's logistically possible, not to mention, WHY WOULD THEY BOTHER. What is the point of them just lazing about, making the humans gather them when they could do it themselves and far faster?
3. Of the two things (in my five-second check of fandom) I've seen regarding post-COE Gwen, people seem to think she's going to mope around and be depressed without Jack to talk to and Tell Things. and b) that Jack didn't love Gwen enough to stay on Earth.
DID YOU PEOPLE MISS THE PART WHERE HE MURDERED HIS GRANDSON. Seriously. I don't care if the ENTIRE TEAM were alive. They would not be enough to keep his self-hating ass from running away!
Not to mention, Gwen and Rhys were happy and cheerful--sure, she's NOT happy that Jack ran away, and she thinks he's an idiot, and she might not like large portions of Earth right now. But she's also perfectly positioned to do things like be In Charge while Johnson and her people clean up the Hub (all those people in cryo down there, not to mention the Rift, and you don't think maybe it's going to need cleaning up a bit?)
I wouldn't be surprised if she and Bridget haven't wrung the government for enough money to rebuild, honestly.
Oh, wait. I forgot. She's pregnant. Obviously, she can't do anything...

I really hope the next series (I've heard they've got approval for one, at least) does follow-through with Jack not being his happynormal self. He already moved from smarmy con man to srs bsns leader guy, so it's not like it's hard to let him evolve (also, I sort of think Barrowman might object if he didn't keep that darkness?)
Of course, I also think the next series should use him sparingly, but that's just me and my "there should be a new team with Gwen in charge" side. =D

3. Sort of on topic: I am kind of amazed at the pervasive view of someone on my flist who believes that Gwen, being the alleged 'moral compass' of the team, thinks that somehow equates to 'never doing anything wrong, ever' because she fucked Owen once (and VERY OBVIOUSLY regretted it) and clearly likes Jack (but doesn't act on it), and has a really ridiculous level of hate for the character because of that. And I do not see this person aim stupid attitude at Jack at all even though he KILLED HIS GRANDSON.
But I love Gwen, and believe that she has a Reason For Living besides Jack. Good lord.

3. I... don't know that I'd call Gwen the moral compass, but good grief is she painfully human (so were Tosh, Owen and Ianto).
But I've seen that attitude, and it just baffles me. Is Gwen self-righteous and wrong? Yes. Not all of the time, but yes. (and that bit where she's trying desperately to prove that she and Ianto were close kills me every time I hear it)
Sigh. Hrm.

3. Well, the person in question says it was stated by the writer in a Confidential or whatever it is they call them for Shagwood, which I never bother to make an effort to see, so I don't know. WHATEVS.

As for Point 2, it's one of a few too many plot holes. (Though if you bring those up, you're clearly just another hysterical fangirl who can't appreciate Rusty's genius because you want your gay boys back.)

And the plot holes. Sigh. Excuse me while I apply real-world knowledge of blood spatter to Rupesh's death and POINT OUT that there would have been blood spatter AND a trail of it. Bah. (ok, so that was the bit annoying me this morning at work, yes)
But then, I expect a lot from my tv shows, also I'm a woman and so easily hysterical. Yup.
eta: yes, that was sarcasm at Rusty's expense (even if I like his Supernatural comment)

Is it really logistically easier for them to gather the kids themselves? They have one ship that's presumably a cargo ship. Even if they have technology that might be able to snag kids off the earth from their playgrounds and bedrooms, will a cargo ship crew have the numbers for that sort of volume and training for that sort of equipment? They could probably have managed the twelve in 1965 by themselves, but they were probably operating under an existing, proven business plan under which if you get the mark to do it for you on the test-marketing run, then they're primed to do it for you if you come back for mass-marketing.
alryssa is right, they proabably have a sadistic streak, because a sadistic streak is a business tool in that game.

And I was thinking of their ability to control the children, but maybe they can't make them move, only speak?

And I was thinking of their ability to control the children, but maybe they can't make them move, only speak?
That is a good question. It depends on whether their control of the children is a sort of hypnosis that makes them susceptible to command ("Children, get into our ship."), or whether it's a broadcast remote control of their bodies so that all their actions are identical and simultaneous ("Sir, I can send the 'walk forward' command but not all of the children are pointed at one of our ships."). The latter is implied by that, as you say, the former doesn't seem to have been attempted.
Or perhaps taking control of the children for long enough to conduct the boarding operation would damage them and make them useless.

I kept re-reading this at work, and I truly love it. And think you should write it as more than comment fic. =D
I'm assuming that before Jack wandered off, he did some showing of the ropes.
Oh, there were some conversations, I'd assume. Also, I'm not sure how much of the ropes he had to show her considering last time she picked up and took over the team--though I'm not sure she was as together then as she is now.
And Lois and Rhys are awesome, and OH, Johnson smiling. Once. Maybe. =D

That's what makes this story; but at the same time, the attractiveness of the character has always been his irrepressibleness. (Irrepressibility?) If the character returns (Latest I read Davies to say is that the BBC and the production team only have to cross Is and dot Ts to get contracts signed, which mean there'll probably be a fourth season but Barrowman's not signed yet), he'll need to get that back. He'd have to take the first episode or season showing how he gets it back (though I'd prefer it not take all season); the reason I don't write CoE fix-its is I feel so strongly that that healing needs to be shown onscreen I'm not willing to write something I believe must be jossed.
