More thoughts on ST

blah, spoilers, etc

So. The sad thing is, this film has next to no women in it. And it's not exactly something they can fix easily. All of the women from the classic series they could add in are still nothing more than tertiary characters. I can already hear the cries of "omg Mary sue!" from the fandom if they dare give Janice Rand or Carol Marcus any sort of role that isn't to stand in the background and look pretty.

Fault Ron and BSG all you want, but, fuck, at least there were more women (although, curiously, the black woman is still the comms tech) from the get-go, and they all had impact upon the plot (we will not discuss s4/4.5)

So, to get around that, they should have gender-swapped some of the boys. It's a reboot, gender is determined in the womb and it's a matter of fate, anyway.

You can't swap Spock, Uhura would be sad. (though, if I never have to read 'Uhura was Spock's woman' in a fic ever again it will be too soon)
Swapping Sulu might have worked, same for Scotty and Bones.

So.

Swap Chekhov. He's Wesley Crusher anyway, it's not like being a girl would make much of a difference (although fandom likes him?)

Swap Kirk. James becomes Jamie. Cast Julia Stiles. Change nothing else in the script.

The wank would be epic.

It would also be an awesome choice, and I love my brain, because I've personally spent the last three hours happily visualizing Jamie instead of James in the movie, and it works. Possibly even better than Starbuck as a woman.

Then you'd have three women, one a part of the major cast, two parts of the minor cast.

LOL! I love your brain, too, bb.

The real Uhura would stick a shiv in anyone she heard refer to her as "Spock's woman."

Spock is her partner. Pfft.

that wouldn't have even been hard to explain! Since the start of the movie was when or before characters were born...

Exactly. And for a tiny second, when Kirk's daddy asked what sex he was? I actually thought they were gonna do it...

Sigh. Lost opportunities.

Or how about Captain Christina Pike. And I think that Chekov definetly should have been gender swapped. The male/female ratio from 1965 seemed weak in 2009. Even though I loved everything else about it.

Next film I suppose they can bring in Nurse Chappell.

Pike was born before the AU began, though. I did consider it, though (I know who I'd cast, too--Susanna Thompson who played Col. Hollis Mann on NCIS)

She retired and moved to Hawaii--Jenny was looking at an article about it. There was never any 'closure', but the wiki claims she left when she realized Gibbs would never tell her everything.

I figure she got knocked out of the show in the "We must pretend Season four NEVER EVER HAPPENED because we have shiny new producers!" bullshit.

I believe that McCoy says something to an off-screen Chapel in the sickbay scenes of the movie. They most definitely have to include her in the next film. Am more ambivalent about Yeoman Rand but maybe they can do some wonders with her character, too (as long as they don't have her just tagging after Kirk, please!).

As it is, Sulu doesn't really get that much development of his character in the movie. And while I like that they gave Uhura l33t linguistic skills, one woman in the ensemble cast just isn't enough!

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. *nods*

It's just. There's only so much time they have, and there's no way they'd pull a BSG and ignore large swathes of the main cast to bulk up the supporting members like that.
ancarett: New Trek, New McCoy (Trek McCoy Promo)

[personal profile] ancarett 2009-05-19 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yup -- if we were looking at a TV series, there could be a chance to explore the range of characters more fully. But with a one-off movie every few years? We'll be lucky to see Christine Chapel in the next outing!

[identity profile] kkglinka.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I dunno. The next movie will probably limit the cast more to the crew. It might be impossible not to use characters like RN. Chapel and Noncom Rand. Heck, I dunno if anyone noticed, but there was a woman in a skirt at what was most likely the tactical station (the dias opposite the science station). *shrugs*

[identity profile] tafkarfanfic.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
They mentioned Nurse Chapel in this.

The hard part is, as [livejournal.com profile] lyssie points out, once you get beyond the canon characters there's just barely any room for anyone else. They did a good job of casting for diversity in those supporting roles; there just weren't many supporting roles to cast.

James into Jamie (or something else)

[identity profile] kiri-l.livejournal.com 2009-05-18 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I like that!

I would like to see more women in it, at least the ones they've shown in "speaking" roles haven't been all backdrop. Spock's mom is definitely saying her piece (I'm listening to the audio book much more in it) and well Uhura isn't backdrop.

The Uhura / Spock relationship will be interesting (heck the back story there is obviously interesting already - I've seen people state that's when their relationship began (i.e. on the Enterprise, but that is not correct.. there has obviously been something going on for a while and they've been keeping it very quiet because she's in Academy and he's one of her instructors. And before someone say "no" think about it.. if there wasn't a prior connection would she have approached and touched him like that ON the Enterprise? )

Re: James into Jamie (or something else)

[personal profile] scarfman 2009-05-18 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)

And when he doesn't assign her to the Enterprise immediately, his stated reason is to avoid the apperarance of favoritism. Maybe it's because I already was spoiled for the lift scene, but I took that to mean, not only are they already an item, it's not a secret that they're an item.

Re: James into Jamie (or something else)

[identity profile] kiri-l.livejournal.com 2009-05-18 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well there's being known about (I suspect his peers knew and perhaps some close friends, maybe her roomate) and then there's "everyone and their brother is Tibet" knowing. It didn't seem that Kirk or her fellow cadets were aware.

That explains the "favoritism" comment if his peers and supervisors at the Academy were aware of them and thus keeping a sharp eye on things to make sure she wasn't "helped" along for the wrong reasons.

I suspect in general Uhura and Spock were being discreet but not secretive. Starfleet obviously goes lighter on these issues than contemporary military and paramilitary organizations, because in Balance of Terror you have a Starfleet officer marrying her direct subordinate. Probably has to do with the psychology of deep space duty.

Re: James into Jamie (or something else)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
No, Uhura isn't. But she's the only to actually DO anything. Sure, there are some background women who occasionally have lines?

But Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu, Scotty and Chekhov all contribute.

And that's something no women (other than Uhura) do. There's one transporter tech who Chekhov has to upstage to prove how awesome he is, otherwise they're women having babies or.... nothing. (wait, there was one barracks officer who was a woman and gave ship assignments out)

I'm really really tired of not having women on the big screen or tv in SF roles. It's been FORTY YEARS since the original ST, and yet they still have a ratio of ONE WOMAN TO TEN OR FIFTEEN MEN.

Fuck that bullshit.

Cast Julia Stiles.

These three words alone make me LOVE YOUR BRAIN.

I am against the swapping of Chekov only because I will heart Gene Roddenberry forever for (presumably intentionally) creating a male damsel in distress. (And having him continue to be so at, like, 40!) Anyone else? COMPLETELY FAIR GAME.

though, if I never have to read 'Uhura was Spock's woman' in a fic ever again it will be too soon

My brain likes Julia Stiles as a swaggering, womanizing, awesome, ass-kicking starship captain! I swear I wasn't basing her on Kara, but Kirk sort of begat Starbuck....

Sulu, then, I suppose.

[identity profile] scifiaddict86.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
It seems to me they do add an entirely new female cadet to the mix, or at least they do in the book series the movie was based who is pretty much a female version of Kirk my hope is she is included in the next movie. Although I have heard she was a Mary Sue its possible that was just some upset slash shippers.

Also Kirk can't become a girl, it would alter the character a female version could have the same characteristics but it wouldn't be the same. I think it goes both ways though if someone suggested making Kira a man I would be just as hesitant. James Kirk is an iconic character cheesy old dinosaur he might be what your suggesting still feels like sacrelige.

I do remember reading somewhere that Dualla was written with Uhura in mind and that her name was chosen because of it. I remember RDM saying he wanted to add a female character to the CIC scene since they had been mostly men and thus he created Dee. It may have been in one of the Cylons in America books but it also could have been something for Star Trek too I don't remember exactly
