fuck you, Joe Quesada.

Don't like the sexism in Marvel comics? Don't read!

(you'll have to scroll down a bit to his comments on the new Marvel "for women" book with sexy chicks on the cover who spend the time complaining about boys and buying makeup. BEING A SUPERHERO IS SO HARD FOR WOMEN, YOU GUYS)

It's called Marvel Divas. *snaps fingers*

I saw that on Sunday and practically FELL OUT OF MY CHAIR. He really IS, as someone said over on CBR, THAT MYOPIC AND DISMISSIVE. He really believes his own bullshit, doesn't he? We're all HATERS!

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Well, obviously we are. Because we're not leaping to suck his unmentionables for a book that infantilizes (fuck, is that even a word?) women and turns them into the same staid and pointless stereotypes!

Because we'd rather have a book about women punching people than a book about women discussing men. FUNNY, THAT.

[identity profile] phantasmagoriak.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
WTF. So basically, his argument is, "Well, you've only read previews so first of all your opinion is invalid. Second of all, too bad: sex sells."

Weak.

And, um, if it's a book about women for women, intended to portray strong, relatable female characters, wouldn't it stand to reason that it should be written by women?

YES. To all of that. Sigh.

I found this especially funny because seeing the Marvel Divas cover was the trigger for me to cut my pull list by 90%. I now get three titles a month, not thirty. SUCK IT QUESADA!

HAHAHAH. I admit I'm beginning to feel dirty for still buying Captain Britain, but I can pretend it's not Marvel? Same goes for Cosmic Marvel.

[identity profile] lilacsigil.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Captain Britain is one of the three! I'm not finding it hard to pretend that it's not part of Quesada's Marvel.

Right at the moment, I don't know who I want to punch more in the face: Joe Mallozzi or Joey Q. Can I do both? Joey M has been on my list for months and months and months

[identity profile] bethos.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Female comic-buying demographic? Obviously that's a myth!

If they want to read comic books they can look at our demeaning artwork and sexist storylines, and if they don't want to read comic books there's not enough of them to earn us any money anyway!

These are the same women who are too stupid to realize that Syfy and Sci-Fi mean the same thing, I guess. That illusory female "market".
ext_18106: (Default)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
No, now, you know women wouldn't buy comics or watch SF if they had well-drawn characters and no t&a!

Sigh. What a pity they're so thick.

Comic books really have gone to hell in their desperation to sell books. That article is laced with covers from old comic books from the 60's and 70's, and not one of those old covers is overly sexualized. The Diva's cover is totally over the top, and every time I've ever read a comic book guy trying to justify the sexism portrayed in comic books they come across as totally insincere and insulting. Remember the Mary Jane statue a few years ago in which she was sticking out her boobs while leaning over a laundry basket? "Oh! So! Not! Sexist!"

Right.

Yay comics industry, once again making me not at all sorry if I never set foot in a comics store ever ever again. Oy. (Though I do need to break down and just buy that Excalibur TPB on my wishlist. On account of [livejournal.com profile] paulcornell2 is eeeeebil.)

The whole "Look at Pink's album covers! Sex sells!" argument is especially hilarious, because dude. YOUR MARKET IS TELLING YOU THEY DON'T LIKE THIS. IT'S NOT SELLING TO THEM. IT'S TURNING THEM OFF. Rather than listening, it's his default to assume those opinions don't matter.

You also gotta love this:
And if you feel like you’re not being heard or like your opinion doesn’t matter, just look at how much column space I devoted to your question.

How kind of him! We should give him a cookie. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/22789525@N00/3455427220/in/set-72157616944737345/)

UGH.

To wit: I'm not going to Wizard World and sent the following message to the con organizers.

To Whom It May Concern,

I have been a long-time attendee of WizardWorld Chicago. In point of fact, I have been attending said convention from when it was still called Chicago Comicon. In years past I have paid for VIP tickets and spent a good bit of money at the Wizard booth.

Basically, I am a paying customer and wanted to let you know that I will no longer be attending your convention because of the sexist remarks made by this year's guest of honor, Joe Quesada in this article: http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=92159514&blogId=486588871

I was incredibly offended that valid concerns were blown off and that anyone who found sexism in Marvel books - and pointed it out - should basically put up with it.

Because of this, I will not be spending any time or money at your convention, and while I know that my $600-1000 is not that much in your wide scheme of things, it is still something. It is me saying that I do not appreciate a figurehead of a company where he has decision-making power telling me that my opinions and offense don't matter.

Thank you for your time,
-A.j.
