I guess it is, but the thing is... Lee and Kara didn't get shit.
Sam got the ending he got, as did Kara... but none of them ended up with anything resembling a happy ending, which cheated both ships. but it seems unfair to say sam was killed off to give Lee/Kara an ending, since all they got was Lee going "bla bla climb every mountain" and Kara (like EVERY SINGLE NAMED HUMAN FEMALE IN THE WHOLE DAMN SHOW, WHICH... HELLO ISSUES) Going "poof" with zero answers about WTF she was.
It was a MAD unsatisfying ending for both ships, but I take issue with the idea that Sam died *SO THAT* Lee/Kara could realize true love, because I'm sorry. They did NOTHING anywhere near the like. In fact Sam/Kara got way, way more of a shippery ending than Lee/Kara did...
And as much as you or anyone could ship Sam/Kara, the fact is Lee/Kara has been a relationship (Romantic or not) that existed from the miniseries and was woefully, pathetically underserved by the series finale.
Actually, though I was talking about a fic I'd skimmed, yes. I don't actually think any of them got a very satisfying ending (I can happily make them angels or whatever, but that's still not an actual, canon, ending that makes sense!)
Now. If the show had ended with Kara and Lee happily traipsing off--yeah. It would have felt cheap (cheaper than it did). But then again, Adama and Kara being best friends/fake daughter again without any sort of transition between "you're a cancer and I'm choking you" to "I know who you are" is also cheap. (though that might just be because I want to punch him in the face)
I keep trying to do the list of female characters and... failing. Because it's really really depressing to realize that the only woman who survived the mini-series that made it through the finale was head!Six (technically, Caprica did, but she wasn't retconned back into existence until season two).
Yeah, there were a *lot* of cheap things about the finale, and despite being a Lee/Kara shipper (and all my many, many issues w/ how they ended that) I was really annoyed/disappointed by the way they ended Anders' character. And while I'd appreciate them at least leaving Kara *alive* and on planet, it did feel like they were throwing him under the bus to uncomplicate the Lee/Kara ending... and to then give us *that*. Yuck. Yeah, let's just make the difficult female disappear so we don't have to deal with her...
And yeah, technically six made it through the finale, and one of the Sharons, but both of them - while female - weren't even human. Not a single named human female made it... and pretty much all the human men made it. Grrrrr.
No worries. I was too tired to realize I hadn't made it clear in the least, last night.
Well, yeah. Tricia and Grace made it all the way through. But no human women. Sigh. No women who weren't married, either. (though I suppose they should be all about making babies now)
So of course I had to go and look, and that was a really impressive exchange on both sides.* Kudos to you both! For the feedback and the response, that is. No comment on the author's creative decisions! ;) (Well, and I haven't read the story...)
* ETA: It's probably just that I've read too much fandom_wank, but a reader giving thoughtful and respectful critique on what worked and didn't and a writer not getting all butthurt and defensive but actually taking the crit. onboard seems so... civilized. Heh.
*sigh* I was afraid of that, I'd been enjoying the story, but had a feeling the last chapter would go down that way. I'll have to go check out the last chapter and your comments when RL isn't insane.
To be honest, I was sort of expecting it, given the way she was writing them as Sam Never Understanding Kara, and Kara being Restless. It still was annoying.
Worse is making someone evil to facilitate a ship. Like I said before, if you have to do that to justify your ship, maybe there's something wrong with your ship.
Oh, that's pretty heinous, yes (and for once, I can say I think I've seen it come from Kara/Sam people, too. Though nowhere near as often. And let's not talk about the demonizing of poor Dee)
Yeah, it makes me sad, though depending on how it's done I can live with it ... but it's so rarely done in a way that I can live with, so... *gives up on making sense*
I think a big problem is that so many people just don't think they can break up a pairing. Well, shocker, people change and distance themselves from each other.
Killing the Other can work out all right in the right hands, but it's usually so obvious they're just conveniently getting rid of The Enemy or forcing angst...
Half of fanfiction would have to be scrapped if people couldn't kill off someone so other characters could realize their one true love. I am always vaguely astonished that it's not Kara being killed so that Sam and Lee can run away together.
Hee - that's what I was going to say. They can just write post-Maelstrom fics. ;)
Though, I have seen a few Sam/Lee fics that almost invariably kill off Kara, and while they're not my cup of tea (b/c where's the Kara?!) it's somewhat better in that the writers tend to love Kara too, and that really is the only way the boys would get together without her involved.
Now, if only people would embrace the OT3, I'd be onboard. ;)
