I remember the first time I heard "Whiter Shade of Pale" as Muzak. It was at a shopping mall, of course. Decades ago now.

I think the next time I felt so appalled was much more recently, when I heard Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love" on a soft rock station. I'd never heard a hail of chains described as soft before.

I'm beginning to think maybe it's because there aren't 'oldies' station formats anymore, so... hrm.
