lyssie: (Annie Lennox gender?)

Just a wierd warning

Or whatever you want to call it. As evidenced this morning, I have a massive, knee-jerk, hate-on for Caprica. I'm not watching it. I don't think giving Ron another show was a good thing, given his destruction of every single female character in favor of the men.

And a show about white men angsting isn't really going to interest me at all, even if one of them is 'jewish'. ('yosef'. I get it. Really.)

They pronounce it "Yosef?" O_o

iirc, it was mentioned in someone's review (or maybe at Skiffy, I was poking lots of places out of boredom last night).

Yeah they do but I didn't get the Jewish vibe there at all. More came across like Italian. Especially with the tattoos and mafia allusions.

Off topic, but props for the icon! Annie Lennox is totally andro-sexy. :D

I am so totally with you. Moore has already used up all his second chances with me. And I was pretty darn generous with the second chances, too. But I am officially Done. With. Him.

I suppose it's possible I might change my mind. If Caprica gets rave reviews from people whose judgment I respect, I'd probably check it out. Not that I'm really expecting that to happen. But even if I did check it out, I'd guard against getting too attached to the female characters (who might start out kickass but would be unlikely to end htat way). After Moore's character assassination of ALL OF THE WOMEN in BSG, I'd just be setting myself up for disappointment.

Remember back in Season 1, before the women were lobotomised and when the cast actually had a reasonable level of diversity? I miss those days.

To be fair, I don't think Ron is really any worse than Whedon. But right now, I'm having a ridiculously harsh and hatey reaction to the mere mention of Caprica.

Sort of? I never actually thought the show was much of a mecca of women, but season one at least had... um... Kara and Roslin? And Cally bit that dude's ear off? And head!Six spent a lot of time getting Gaius off. And less time was spent on Adama's manpain, actually.

So, true. Season one? Better, in a lot of respects. And it wasn't until the babyfarm that season two started showing that, uh, they sort of sucked at their follow-through (I still suspect a large part of it was the writers going, "We created these strong female characters! We rock!" and then "...what do we do with them?" "IDK."
"Let's get 'em pregnant, raped, subjugated and married." "Right. That's what happens to women." because writing women as people is hard.)

Yeah, but it's been years since Whedon's produced anything I've really connected with, so I'm less pissed off at him. It's not like I'm emotionally attached to Dollhouse here. My problem isn't with shows that are skeevy from the start (like, say, Dollhouse), it's with shows that start out good, I get attached, and then it gets all skeevy.

Well yeah, it's not like BSG was ever *fabulous* at women and minorities, but there was a time when it didn't actively suck. Maybe an overly fine distinction, but something doesn't have to be groundbreaking for me to like it. It just has to be reasonably good. Anyway, the point is that I entirely understand your hatey reaction, because I'm all kneejerk hatey about it too. I'm all out of excuses for Moore's inadequacies as a writer/showrunner. And even though I'm mad at him because of BSG, I'm going to take it out on his new show.

Depressingly enough, I think you're right on the nose here.

*shrug* I'm probably not gonna watch it for reasons that have nothing to do with BSG bitterness. I just don't really care.

(Now "The Plan" I'm gonna be freaking out for all year. *sigh*)

YES. No matter how apathetic I feel about Caprica, I really want to see The Plan, like, immediately. Though I'll probably spoil myself like crazy to avoid being massively disappointed if it's kind of lame.

I'm not even sure it's all BSG bitterness (especially since I'm half and half on that--like, if I sit down and make a graph, I'm all ragey. But, otoh, people are still married and lived who I'd thought wouldn't and stuff.) *is vague* -- because it can't be just that, since then I should be even more rageful about things like Virtuosity and Dollhouse (which is... worse). Or those episodes of Ghost in the Shell. Hrm.

And, to be a hypocrite, I am ALL OVER "The Plan". (despite its lack of new!Kara footage. Ron. Sucker Katee into doing greenscreen shots and digitally insert her, pls) This is possibly because the Cylons make me gleeful. and Sam.

Isn't Esai Morales Hispanic? Whatever?

[identity profile] noybusiness.livejournal.com 2009-04-17 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he's Puerto Rican.

[identity profile] star-lace.livejournal.com 2009-04-17 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'll probably eventually watch at least the pilot just to see it, but I'm so uninterested in watching more man-pain. I'm still undecided about whether I'll follow the series or not, but I'm leaning toward no because honestly, RDM frakked with BSG-verse enough in the last few episodes. I don't need Caprica coming around and ruining the last few things I still love about BSG canon.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-04-17 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. You know, that might be part of it? Like, I get that he wants to be "exploring" and whatever, but if HE COULDN'T BE BOTHERED to put it in my show, he can suck it.

[identity profile] noybusiness.livejournal.com 2009-04-17 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the stuff from Caprica wouldn't fit on the show. It's all 58 years beforehand. People didn't even like flashing back two years.

[identity profile] tafkarfanfic.livejournal.com 2009-04-17 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think we're going to be watching it either. I hated how the plot turned out on BSG (as you know), and my other half won't watch because it doesn't have spaceships.
ext_18106: (Default)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-04-17 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Spaceships! Sigh. I know that is actually part of my disinterest in it. I want flippy ships and explosions and people shooting things (preferably women shooting things).

But a large portion is also that one statistic about *vagues* chocolate truffles that didn't survive.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/radon_/ 2009-04-17 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Meh Caprica. I watched it and it was just a nonevent for me. More manpain = DNW.

I really really can't wait for The Plan though. Hopefully it gets leaked? :D
ext_18106: (Default)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-04-17 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The Plan. It will have Sixes and Eights and Sam Anders. *pleased*

[identity profile] noybusiness.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
What more could we ask? Glasses!Six and Leather!Six and finally what Sam was up to all that time with as much or more pressure on him as was on the fleet military, and maybe even insight as why Boomer hooked up with Cavil.

[identity profile] noybusiness.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Now there's a thought. I'm waiting for the Caprica DVD release, but I probably wouldn't be able to hold out for The Plan that way if it was leaked.

"Liam downloaded into Sam"

Nope. Don't fucking want to, either.

[identity profile] noybusiness.livejournal.com 2009-04-17 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's not about that at all. Keep reading.

[identity profile] noybusiness.livejournal.com 2009-04-17 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Um, okay. It's just a side-splittingly funny fic about what the Five were doing on Earth with Sam obsessing over rock and Galen over avocados while trying to appease Ellen's seemingly crazy demands for a brainscanomatic downloadatron, and then "are we there yet" when they're heading for the Colonies. But whatever.

Read any good books lately? I'm reading the Doctor Who novels myself.

Given his current show's premise is "women are raped and brainwashed every week and it's ok!" I might not be, no.

But Ron and Eick are currently my targets for ire (Eick for ruining Bionic Woman, to be honest).
