No Wasted Minutes Between the Spaces

"He looks so peaceful."

Sam glanced over Kara's shoulder at the man sprawled in the sunlight and shrugged, "He could be faking it."

Her elbow swung back, but missed him since he was out of range. "Idiot," she muttered, drifting carefully closer.

There was something wistful about her as she looked down at Karl Agathon. Maybe it was the way Karl's mouth hung slack, or the expression on his face (as though he'd forgotten to buy milk at the store). Or maybe she simply missed the simple and easy friendship she'd had with Karl (simple, even when he pushed her into the knowledge that what she felt for Sam, for Lee, wasn't something simple at all. Simple, even while he held her as the world came apart, Sam's hands slack in hers).

"You miss him," Sam murmured quietly, drifting up behind her, his hand brushing over her shoulder. Careful, as though maybe that elbow would snap back into him again.

"Don't you?"

Sam was silent for so long Kara started to think he'd never answer. She'd dropped down to sit cross-legged next to Karl, a long piece of grass in her hand, twisting between her fingers before she tickled him under his chin with it.

"I miss him. Miss a lot of them." Sam finally replied. He didn't elaborate, feet moving him away from where she was.

There were times Kara wasn't sure she understood her husband. Angel, ascended being, Cylon, hybrid (though she tried never to think of that); whatever he was, he had changed from what she'd known. Then again, so had she, coming to terms with things she hadn't expected to, playing a song she'd known from childhood, dying, finding Earth.

Yet they were also the same people, laughing and joking with each other, finding meaning and comfort in things like holding hands or having sex. And sometimes, wandering down to 'Earth' and watching the people they'd known go about their lives, picking up the pieces and moving on.

Kara dropped the piece of grass and brushed an illusory finger-tip down Karl's nose, grinning a little as it wrinkled in his sleep.

"Miss you, you idiot."

"We always miss the people we love."

Kara turned, though she wasn't exactly surprised by the voice or the presence that had come to join her, to look up at the angel who had taken the form of Six. Her blonde hair was ruffling in a breeze that didn't exist. "Did you love someone?"

Her lips turned up slightly, the smile almost reaching her eyes, causing them to dance just a little. "Wrong question." Smoothing down the front of her bright-red dress (as out of place as the wings that Kara sometimes sported seemed), she crouched and tickled Helo's nose with her own cat-tailed weed.

"Is there ever a right question?"

"When you know that--" the angel chuckled and handed Kara the piece of plant, though she didn't stand, "--you'll have one up on all of us."

Rolling her eyes, Kara wrapped the stem around her fingers, then shrugged. "Do you love someone still?"

"Don't you?"

"A question for a question seems unfair."

"I'm not a box filled with answers for you to uncover, Kara Thrace," was the angel's retort before she stood again, turning her head to watch Sam Anders return. Hera Agathon was bouncing behind him, playing with a whole chain of plaited weeds.

There were questions Kara could ask: if Sam had made Hera's chain, where he'd been, about the Gods, God, about whether they were truly angels or if that was simply the word they had borrowed from Gaius Baltar.

Not the most reliable source of names, obviously.

But there seemed no point to the questions, and she wondered if that were a symptom of the life she had led still telling her that the answers didn't matter.

Sam nodded to Six, as he always did. Taking her appearance in stride, as he'd taken this version of Baltar, and the Leoben they'd glimpsed once.

Running past him, Hera pounced on Helo's chest, startling him awake with a yelp, and giggling when he grabbed her, fingers tickling as she tried to tickle back. Sam dropped down next to Kara, both out of the way only barely. Helo occasionally kicked a leg through them.

"We should go," Kara finally said, after Athena had arrived, laughing, and the three had tumbled together in the sunlight, Hera triumphantly taking the crown of Queen of the mountain.

Having moved to sit behind her, Sam chuckled a little, hands absently stroking her arms. He didn't say anything, but he didn't have to. Kara could almost hear the question. She turned it over in her mind, considered it from all sides, but didn't answer it as she pushed to her feet.

"She's pregnant again," Six said, her voice startling them both.

They had forgotten she was there, but she'd basked in the laughter and sunlight as much as they had. She laughed softly as they blinked at her. "Athena is a woman who deserves children and happiness. Don't you agree?"

"As a reward for being one of God's faithful Cylons?" Kara asked, her tone sarcastic as she turned away.

None of them spoke until they'd reached an empty field, the breeze sending the grass dancing, but leaving them untouched. Sam bent and ruffled the blades, and Kara had a moment of something that could have been a vision. A farm, Sam working the land, his shoulders bare as the sun beat down upon them. She was barefoot as she ran across the fields towards him, laughing about the bargains she'd made in the market that day.

Sam caught her hand and the vision drifted away from her.

"You looked lost," he said, the words almost lame as he looked down at her. "Six has already gone."

"I'm fine," Kara replied, though she didn't pull away from him.

"Do you want to go throw water balloons at Gaius?"

A smile tugged the corners of her mouth up, and Kara tipped her head back, staring at Sam, admiring the way the breeze tugged at his hair, "You always did know how to be entertaining."

The breeze passed over the grass, tangling blades together before releasing them, but Kara and Sam were no longer there to see.

Nope. Doesn't succeed as penance at all. It's far too short, for one thing. ;)

Seriously, I love this. From the tickling Helo with plant matter to the incorporeal (noncorporeal?) Kara and Sam to the possibility that Hera's weed chain came from Sam (because if anyone is totally aware of their guardian angels, it's Hera).

More, please. I'll wait.

*snerks* You're lucky it got this long! I was re-reading and adding bits to it as I went. Sigh. If I could have something vaguely plotty, that wasn't just people wandering around and/or Kara and Sam sexin' it up or whatever...

I can try something longer, but it may take time.

And thank you =)

*pets you* I feel lucky to have it, period. :) And I wasn't really all that serious about longer... Mostly. Sort of. *squish*

What a cute fic! Love Kara tickling Helo from the other side. ^_^ Hera totes knows that Sam and Kara are watching over them and it is ADORABLE.

Thank you =)

Hera and Nicky can both see them, I think. ;]

'cause Nicky is TOO half-Cylon...!

*happy sigh*

I feel like this has an edge that should make me a little sad, but I'm blissfully ignoring it to concentrate on how adorable and right this fic is. Lots of little moments I love. :)

The melancholy was there after I'd finished, yeah. Sigh. I didn't want it!

Concentrating on the cute works, though. =)

Thank you.

Thank you =)

Hera sort of demands lots of playtime and snuggles, and so the the other two Agathons. And Kara and Sam are sort of half-stuck in that, "it could'a been us, sigh" state.

Head!Six is really hard to write, unfortunately. She's not... trying to 'guide' them like she was Gaius, and I was finding myself floundering a bit. Arg.

This is just wonderful. I love Kara and Sam watching over what happens, interacting in both worlds. And the tying of the bit about "Six" not being the box to uncover all the answers with Hera's chain was fantastic. I really, really like this story.

Thank you =)

The "Six" thing was mostly happenstance, since I find her almost too opaque to write for any length of time before I feel completely lost. So I tend to cut things with her short.

But I'm glad it works! =)

Aw, this is lovely.

For some reason I love the thought of them interacting with head!Six.

Sam bent and ruffled the blades, and Kara had a moment of something that could have been a vision. A farm, Sam working the land, his shoulders bare as the sun beat down upon them. She was barefoot as she ran across the fields towards him, laughing about the bargains she'd made in the market that day.

Thank you =)

I would like to write them interacting with her more, but she is... tricky. And I may have to re-watch stuff (the problem is: she's so focused on Gaius, it's hard getting a handle on who SHE is, herself).

*pleased*

Aw. Aw. Awwww.....

I do love the answers that people are coming up with for things. Sometimes I think RDM may not have done us such a disservice after all.

This was adorable. And of course Hera sees Sam, and Six, and Kara.
