I dreamt that bunches of us were sitting around organizing the Stargate track for Dragon*Con. (You, me, [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], Mr. Havoc, [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], and I think [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] might've been there too.)
*reads article* All right! I'm going to listen to the poli sci major who thought he'd tell all us flighty fangirls what to worry our pretty little heads about.
"The intellectual marketplace of fan fiction, if you can call it that..."
I am vaguely worried about what that hypothetical group would come up with for programming a track. On the other hand, it would possibly be Made of Awesome.
On the idiot poli sci major, I'm wondering if I'm high enough level to summon Henry Jenkins on him. On one hand, not my class. On the other hand, I totally have a proximity bonus. :P
I'm fairly sure that our programming track would end up being something like this: 1. Why we like female characters, and fuck you all if you don't. 2. Why Sam Carter is awesome. 3. Why Elizabeth Weir is awesome. 4. Why Teyla should rule the world. 5. - 15. Why [female character] is awesome. 16. Plus we really like Jack, and Mr. Havoc won't leave us alone if we don't take pity on him and talk about at least one of the guys. 17. Roleplaying Stargate d20. If we do the AU ep, EVERYONE can play Sam. (Except Mr. Havoc, who is stuck playing Cam, and must therefore forfeit his pants.) 18. Burning My Little Ponies in effigy. Bring your own marshmallows! Mmm, toxic plastic chemicaly goodness. 19. Everyone loves Teal'c. The End.

It's time for a moratorium on fan fiction. It stifles budding writers' creativity, cheapens the original product and, at times, is just plain gross. Spare us.
I can't get to the article now, but did he specifically mention the fact that fandom's predominantly female? Mostly I was just annoyed by his arrogance. Because yes, a fourth year college student automatically has the right to dictate right and wrong to the rest of the world. *insert eyeroll here*
I randomly found this entry and clicked the link. That's my school's paper. Oh why does it not surprise me? I read the Daily Gamecock purely for the laughs. Especially the viewpoints.
it's even worse because I think I've met the guy in passing and he seemed like a decent guy. But at my school the nerds are far outnumbered and it's not a nerdy school at all.
We have an awful football team but it's like a religion around here.
Quite the interesting "article" there, and I love all the comments that followed it, especially the one that essentially said, "Dude. No one accidentally stumbles on a Harry Potter three-way." :P Boy's clearly an idiot.
I keep waiting for the dogpile. He's *so* asking for it. But last time I checked, there were only 12 comments. And yes, the one you mention is definitely one of my favorites.
That article is hi-larious. Could that fourth year poly sci student possibly find a higher horse to ride? Does the guy realize that most people outside of fandom don't even know that fanfiction exists? Seriously, ask someone outside of fandom some time, they'll be clueless. To even admit that you know that people right stories about Harry Potter in a three-way with the Weasley twins gives a lot away right there. ;)
Y'all, did you know fanfiction is cheapening the canon?
*snerk* There are some clever turns of phrase in there. He should do well in politics. A talent for staggering ignorance of the particulars of an issue stands one in good stead there.
take away his pens and paper and give him back his crayons. People write ff cos they want to and no-one but no-one is forcing anyone else to read their prose (ooh posh word). Some ff is great awesome and some isn't. I read stuff that I think 1st time round is a little meh! come back to it later for my sometimes they improve. and vice versa. Son't like idiot don't read it.
I've read the HP-Weasly three way - IT WARNS YOU THIS IS ADULT STUFF. If you have brain use it.
Yes, I have cheapened it horribly and repeatedly. Nya ha ha!
Seriously though, that's a major point of fanfic - you can do whatever you want in it, and neither affect or be affected by canon. Knowing someone's written, say, a fanfic where Harry Potter and Admiral Adama shag isn't going to affect my perception of BSG at all. Though it may affect my perception of the writer.
I left this in a comment, who knows if it'll show up:
It is time for a moratorium on white male college students blathering on the internet about subjects which they barely understand and lecturing everyone in the world how to live their lives, have good morals and keep their fingernails clean in order to gain the acceptance of said college age white male.
The world would be a better place if young white males did something with their education that involved recognizing that their privileged, sheltered positions in the world and limited experience with life and cultures other than their own is a useless place from which to lecture anyone, rather than assuming that the most recent argument they read in a textbook is the guide for living all beings should bow to. Every time I read one of their pointless rants, it irks me so much I waste my time composing, even if only mentally, a response which shreds their arguments into the meager scraps they really are, which is time I could spend writing stories about three-way gang bang scenarios with the characters of Farscape.
White college age males are ruining the internet. They stifle those with differing opinions, reduce all discussions to their narrow moral/political/gendered worldview regardless of the origins or other participants and frequently they're just plain wrong. Spare us.
Can this guy possibly imagine that anyone would pay heed to a "moratorium on fanfic" or is he just talking out of his ass? Talk about stifling creativity.

I'd stack Henry Jenkins three or four books against this guy's single page article any day. Hey, I should go back to the article and say that.

Man, the srs bsns that some of these guys come up with... academia doesn't create the self-importance, but it sure shores it up.
