Bones: mostly caught up

I marathonned the last of season 3, and then all of 4 we've got (the dvr went on the fritz, so we missed the last two). So. I have a few thoughts. They contain spoilers. Obvsly.

I'm not doing this ep by ep, just. Thoughts.

1. The Zack thing. I'd actually gotten spoiled for that back in August, so I was watching for it, and-- it actually fits ok. There's little bits that make you go, "..Zack?...?" It's obvious that more time would have been nice, but the writers' strike chopped into that.

2. CAROLINE IS STILL AWESOME. Just thought you'd all like to know that.

3. Man am I glad Brennan's Dad Crap is over and done with. I also find it hilarious that he was such a focus for two seasons and season four hasn't mentioned him once. (yes, I know he's in one of the eps we've missed)

4. Angela and Hodgins. I hate that it happened, but I'm not surprised. Seriously. You people think they'd ever believe that a couple can be interesting when married? Pssh. Everyone knows all the interesting drains right out. pls to ignore mai bsg otp, kthnx

5. Angela/Roxy. Hahahahah. Brandy went into witness protection and is now an artist.

6. CAM IS ALSO AWESOME. And I <3 <3 <3 <3 her so.

7. One of the things I love about this show (that's at least been apparent in the episodes I've watched): women have healthy sex drives and have sex and do not get punished for it. Seriously. Yes, Brennan had two guys who dumped her, but guys are LIKE THAT and she's still happily having liaisons. Ditto Cam and Angela.

8. The UK episode was a bit uneven and not timed out well, and the scientist guy was obnoxious. However, the only thing I truly remember from that is Indira Varma is so so hot. pls can I have one (and her character also underscored the "women have sex drives and it's ok" message). It is now my firm belief that Suzie Costello really quit Torchwood to join Scotland Yard, leaving a clone behind. One which went a little wonky.

9. Rotating lab assistants = eh. Sort of amusing. I did like Daisy, though, and she and Sweets are adorable, even if, um, he was a bit emotional blackmaily maybe in the first episode she was in.

10. Zack showing up was, um, ok. Kinda cute? (I'll admit, I was sort of grinning, but, seriously? They could only solve the murder with his help? Really? And, um, I didn't watch the Zack and Hodgins scene, I fast-forwarded it. Man angst bores me.)

11. Overall, I've actually found the episodes a little uneven. They feel like they should all be happening within days of each other rather than weeks. I think the writers have lost a little of their subtlety with their constant harping on the various break-ups and Zack's thing. GUYS. WE WILL REMEMBER THIS SHIT, STOP IT.

12. Also. Minor thing, but. Booth gets shot, Brennan pulls his gun and fires it. PARTNERS. omg.

13. Although. Seriously? SERIOUSLY? Was there a reason other than to be stupid to layer on Yet Another Angsty Backstory? God, I was eye-rolling with that whole Booth Family Values crap. Especially because they packed way too much with not enough plot. That whole episode was very badly constructed, unfortunately. (because, yes, Brennan is TOTES GOING TO BELIEVE SOMEONE OVER HER PARTNER....wtf. Though her shoving him off the stool was awesome)

14. Sweets is... eh.

15. Angela, Cam and Brennan still talk, though, so there's hope for this show, kiddies.

I like Sweets, but I hate making him a series regular, because now they have to find ways to shove him in every episode, and you can kinda see the man behind the curtain. The character would be much better as a recurring one, and brought in when needed.

I think they thought they needed another person to round out the ensemble and have realized too late that it makes them top-wieldy, unfortunately.

They 'needed' a Zack replacement, so grabbed him. And likely his few appearances last year went over well with fans, so they gave him more stuff, to the detrement of the show.

Well, that's maybe going a bit too far, but you know what I mean. ;)

Yeah, the problem is with the rotating lab assistants, there's a few too many things for them to shove into any given episode. If they had 50 minutes, it'd be fine, but...

See, I sadly love Sweets because I keep going 'It's Sam Weir! All growed up!'

See, I sort of like him, but I'm vaguely irritated that some of the conversations that once would have been between the women are now between Sweets and one of the women.

13 - I hated that episodes. I hate that they saddled Booth with a tragic abusive past and then used it to let him act like an asshole. And then Bones being "punished" for not believing in Booth and then her nearly groveling apology at the end - Ugh.

And I was doubly irked because I don't usually hate Bones. It is my happy fun time show and if that requires handwaving or ignoring stuff, I do it so as not to ruin the happy fun time. But it totally bested my powers of denial.

I just. Seriously? If this had been, say, sometime near the very beginning, I can sort of see her believing his brother and deciding Booth was bleh and meh and all that.

But now? It makes no logical character sense!
