SQUEAK!

fanfic survey ahoy.

Mike Smith's Fanfic Inquisition. BEGIN!

Eek!

1) How many stories have you written? Ballpark figure.
Yeesh. I'm going to go with... something over 150, including non-posted. Might even be 200, since there's a *lot* of stuff unposted that's merely unfinished. Which drops the figure to around 150, posted.

2) What is your BEST work, in your opinion? And why?
This is really difficult. I don't think *any*thing I've written is my best. In fact, there are times when I feel like it all sucks, and times I feel it all completely and utterly rocks. But. I can guess, um... The Whole Story. I really put a lot of 'me' into it, trying to come up with ways of portraying it all. And I liked how it came out, the songs rather echoing the segments.

3) And the worst...?
Again, I have that superiority complex.... Although bits of Marya do fall into this category, especially the shopping stuff. And, of course, though the idea was great, the Alternate Ending to Excal 120 was not quite as well done as it could have been.

4) What character do you write about?
A lot. No, really. X-Men, Excalibur, X-Force, Buffyverse. Pretender, recently, and others to a lesser extent. Marya covers just about everything from Anita to Gargoyles. Newford is tickling at my brain, and so are a dozen other things.

5) Why them, and _not_ someone else?
They caught my interest. B5, for instance, did not. Neither did Sliders, or Profiler (except Rachel Burke, and even she's been absent). I just... Like connections, in a way, I guess.

6) Ever create an original villain? What for?
Yes. Um. Ilya, for SCW, because I'd been reading Anya's Buffy/Faery fics, and it felt like a good idea at the time. Probably some others, too. But none that were memorable, apparently...

7) What's your favorite fic you've read? (By someone _else_. This isn't all about you, y'know...)
Currently, off the top of my head, um.... See, this is just terribly difficult, because I haven't read much in a while, and, well, what I do remember is all messed up. So, I can say that AJ's Boobytraps fic is in there, and, and, A Second More. by DreaPerK

8) And the worst?
Um. Anything on ff'net. Really. Well, almost. There was a splendid Buffy fic recently there. But just about everything else is sad. Non-ff'net, Maria Cline's early Summers Family work. The never-ending latiny/watery sounding names arcs.

9) What's the one big project you've always meant to do, but have never done?
The Hospital series. It was going to be about the various Marvel women at different years and times, with the backbone (music, yet again) the Girl Power tape I'd made to mock one my sister had. Good stuff was on that tape... There are three segments written, but the rest haven't ever visited.

10) How much time a day do you spend actively working on fanfiction (Writing, editing, outlining)
Depends on the day... But, I'd say an average of around 5 hours, because some of the 10 hours spent online is spent chattering at others, or editing graphics, writing webpages, or just goofing off. I'm a terrible procrastinator.

11) How much time a day do you spend inactively working on fanfiction (Brainstorming, doodling, talking about it with friends)?
Um... a lot. Sometimes I spend too much time plotting, and never actually write. I could have five stories open at any given moment, but be inspired five hours after I've gone to bed with a shiny new scene.

12) What's the stupidest mistake you've ever made in fanfic?
Not bothering to spell check/sight read to make sure I've not misspelled. I have a horrible tendency to post as soon as something's finished. And, well, not using a beta... Although, if it's a really *important* piece...

I just... usually know it's what *I* want, and even if there *are* limitations to it, I usually know they're there, and that I want them to stay.

13) What's the most you've spent on comics for the sole purpose of researching a fic?
er... consider half my Image and Marvel collection... a lot.

14) What bizarre crap have you researched to make a story better?
God. Um. I hate to say it, but I knew about a lot of bizarre crap before I started writing... And, I really haven't used it much.

15) Have you started reading a comic simply because of a fic you wanted to write?
...yes. Stormwatch, because AliMc was into Winter, and I thought he sounded neat, and...

16) Truth is stranger than fiction: Do you use real life occurrences in your writing?
Yeah. I've used bits of dreams (hey, they ARE my life, at least), road trip memories, drinking memories (although I really have very few of those), and... Hrm. Cooking, maybe. Don't know. I just... vaguely sense that I let RL stuff impact, because it's my experience...

Wow....

I'm honored. Wow. *blushes* Thank you. *snuggles* One thing, though. While I write many, many truly wonderful things with the fabulous PerK, Second More was all mine. ;)
