the things you read...

1. I was poking fanficrants last night, out of boredom. And someone was wondering why there's no Jewel in the Crown fic, specifically Kumar/Merrick. And. Dude. I don't know, maybe because Merrick canonically tortured Kumar? And not in the fun, oily, "I will slap you around" way. No. He was stripped, chained, and then whipped. Somehow, I don't think Hari is going to be all, "I love you, man" about that.

2. I re-read the Black Widow LSes last week. Damn, that was good shit. Also, there are threads dangling that I wonder if the author intended to use for a third LS. Pity it's never happened. Marvel would do well to devote a book to a woman. But they'd never do that, they'd rather cancel female-oriented titles and slot women back into the role of housewife, girlfriend and vixen.

3. The Torchwood novel 'Skypoint' was possibly the most fun thing I've read in a while. Spot-on characterization, completely random plot, and action that made me giggle like a fiend. I was quite in love with it. I'm not looking forward to trying to read 'Pack Animals', though. And I've given up on reading 'Border Princes' as I've seen 'Adam' and a retread is simply pointless. (I highly recommend 'Skypoint', btw. It is like crack!fanfic)

I just read Skypoint. I thought enjoyed it but it wasn't one of my favourites - mind you I don't know which one would be my favourite! Why don't you want to read Pack Animals? (I have it, under the bed in my library book pile, but I haven't read the blurb on the back!) I've been told Almost Perfect is good... which is also sitting under my bed waiting for me to get to it!

Because it's Anghelides, and I have a fear of pretentious novel-writers. (one wonders how I made it through anything by Aaronovitch, of course)

Ahhhhh...

Do you mean the Richard Morgan Black Widow mini? Where Natasha discovers that Nick Fury has kept her in line over the years using pheromones? With art by Bill S.?

Yup. 'Homecoming' and 'The Things They Say About Her' were what they were called as trades.

I'm on to your evil plot. Well, one of them, anyway.

Don't think that I haven't noticed that anytime you get bored, and I wander across your journal, I'm struck by the most random story ideas ever. Maybe it's what I get for reading my new book and then seeing more talk about BSG, I dunno.

But I'm on to you! *swats at plotbunny*

*giggles a lot*

Officer, I'm totes innocent, I tells ya.

Oh, yeah? Then explain THIS!

[identity profile] obsidian179.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
There was no sound as the basestar flashed into existence above the former colony of Caprica.

The system had long since been abandoned by the humans, and even the Cylons had little use for it since the refugee fleet had evacuated all the humans they could find. Which wasn't to say that none of them had stayed there. No, it may have been a ghost of its former self, but it had most definitely been inhabited.

'Had' being the operative word.

The distress call had come in mere hours ago, but it was obvious that they were already too late. The basestar's sensors reported Caprica City was... gone. Not abandoned, not destroyed, but gone. According to the Raiders swiftly launched to investigate, it was as if some great force had come along and scooped the entire city off the face of the planet. Similar devastation was reported all over the rest of the planet.

Whatever had happened, it had struck swiftly, and without mercy.

"There is an object of immense size orbiting above the southern equatorial region," reported a model Five. "It may be a vessel of some kind."

A chirping alarm sounded, and a Six raised an eyebrow. "Given that it's scanning us, that does seem somewhat likely," she said dryly.

"It's moving to intercept," the Five said, seeming to ignore her.

"I would suggest we arm weapons," Two said, looking uneasy.

"Whatever that is, it's NOT Colonial," Eight put in.

"Aliens?" Five asked, looking amused by the very idea. He turned to Two. "And you want to blow them up. The first non-human life forms we've encountered."

"If they're responsible for what happened to Caprica..."

"We could ask."

"We could," One interjected. "If they actually answered any of our attempts at communication."

"And you were going to tell the rest of us about that precisely when?" Eight asked sharply. Many of the model Eights had been edgy lately, and this one was no exception. But, Five concluded, this time she raised a valid point.

"When you stopped your petty bickering and focused on the problem at hand," he said without any trace of apology in his voice. "The ship will be in weapons range in one minute."

"Our weapons range, anyway." Six pursed her lips in thought. "Send a squadron of Raiders in for a fly-by. I want a good look at this thing."

No one objected to the idea, and in short order three Raiders were directed to conduct a visual survey of the potentially alien vessel.

It was cubical, lacking any visual means of propulsion. There were no recognizable weapons ports, missile tubes, bridge, or even any windows. If they hadn't seen it move, they might have thought it was the ugliest piece of artwork the Twelve Colonies had ever produced. It hardly seemed capable of doing what had been done to Caprica.

Or at least, it didn't until it snared the three Raiders with energy beams and dragged them toward itself. Communication with the Raiders was abruptly severed.

The hybrid began to scream.

That, more then anything else, convinced the Cylons that something was very wrong with that ship. "Destroy it!" Two insisted, and this time was met with no resistance.

A barrage of missiles, both conventional and nuclear, were launched at the cube ship. Fortunately, it was still far enough away that the detonations didn't harm the basestar.

When the radiation dissipated enough to get a clear reading, they could see that the cube was still there. It hadn't even slowed down.

"We're receiving a transmission," Five reported anxiously. "It's still somewhat garbled... Trying to clear it now..."

What they heard, even as the cube snared them with the same kind of energy beam it had used on the Raiders, sounded like an enormous chorus of voices all speaking in perfect unison, resulting on an almost overpowering single voice.

"-g. Existence as you know it is over. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Resistance is futile."

*snickers* I don't see how any of that has to do with my post...

But it's still amusing. And my Cylon-loving brain is very sad. :/

It has to do with it because after reading a Trek novel about Borg and then watching one or two episodes from the Borg DVD collection, then wandering across your BSG posts, with you being bored, THIS happened!

I told you I was on to your evil plot! :p

Somehow, I don't think Hari is going to be all, "I love you, man" about that.

This, allowing for the difference between target audiences, is why I can't grok Doctor/Master.

Augh. Yes.

[identity profile] brookiki.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
But don't you know that torture is the new dinner-and-a-movie? Nothing says "too shy to say I love you" like whips and chains.

I read the second LS, but never got to read the first. I need to check it out. But I'll agree with you on the lack of good female-oriented titles.

*snicker* Well, yes....

2). Yay, Black Widow! I need to read more of it other than the first one. MAX has had some awesome female-centered titles, which I appreciate even though they keep getting canceled. It'd be really interesting to see how Marvel has treated low-performing male titles vs what it's doing with the female titles. I keep thinking She-Hulk could've been saved if they had gone back to what was working for it before.

From what I've heard, She-Hulk has consistently out-sold a lot of male-dominated books.

And the answer to what they do for low-performing male titles? They keep making them.
