You know what I love about this whole gmail ninja thing? Apparently someone cared about historical authenticity, because the actual real ninja clans in the 15th-17th centuries - and yes, real ninjas actually existed - trained men AND women in their deadly fighting arts, and female ninjas were extensively trained in subterfuge, political intrigue, and physical fighting. The razor tipped fans were one (of many) weapons in their arsenal.
Although ninja did not wear black - that was a deliberate falsehood perpetuated by non-ninja in dramatic stage productions. Ninja were depicted as wearing all black to symbolize their terrifying facility at acting behind the scenes to influence political events to their advantage. Real ninja wore everyday clothing. Or maybe white, because it showed their opponents' blood. Or red, so the blood wouldn't show at all! (Remember, ninja all come from peasant stock that were brutally repressed; when they started fighting back with sharpened garden implements, that's when ninjutsu was born.)
