Reading preferences.

It occurred to me while making notes this morning that, well, perhaps it might be kind of me to write the Sam Anders/BSG plot kraken fic in a tense that more people will enjoy. (It's a small audience, but still cruel to put them through contortions)

Anyone can take said poll, of course.

I almost put OH TRAGIC SYDNEY NO on there, too.

Then I could not have decided at all. :(

Have you not seen my LJ when I innocently pick up a book with it?

Actually, I have. I just didn't know it extended so far. And I only write first person past.

I need to try and write a story in future tense now.

I knew it wasn't exactly popular, and usually I don't care. But this fic might be really long, and, well.

I am pleased that plot krakens with Sam are attacking other poor innocent travelers on the high seas... *nods*

Long fic in present tense is ... not my personal preference.

hah. And as you're a large part of my intended audience...

I'd agree with [livejournal.com profile] lizardbeth_j, if it's longish, I like past tense better. But really it depends on how it's done, too...
*wishy-washy*

Generally I like past tense better but plenty of fics have made me stop noticing once I get into them.

Honestly, I love them both, but I have a real soft spot for present tense fic.

I usually prefer past tense, but present tense is fine for short (less than 1000 words) fic, or for sections of a longer fic. Weirdly, I'm okay with first person in pro-fic, but I hate, hate, hate it in fanfic. Maybe because if my version of the character does not exactly agree with the first-person narrative, I'm thrown right out?

I hate fanfic in first person, yes. Unless it's an OC, because no one has ever been able to nail aspects of character like that. Arrrr.

[identity profile] frolicndetour.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to find past tense more readable too. Sometimes, people will use present tense to break up a longer fic, for sections that you want to stand out as more immediate, and that can work really well.

(I'm very exited!)

Well, this clinches it, really.
