note to self:

Get chosen as VP candidate, so someone will buy you a 150,000 dollar wardrobe and hair style. Make sure it's Republican, as those Dems are cheapskates (srsly, only 400 for a haircut).

Luckily, they'll save cash, as you don't have children to exploit to use as mascots.

But until then, go be one of those Joe Sixpacks or whatever at a job you loathe. Because no one's gonna give you a hand up if you ain't rich.

Listen, woman. You'd have to PROMISE me that you won't blow that wad of $150K on hideous navy Ann Taylor suits! I want you in Galliano!

I counter with this! (http://politicalbunko.wordpress.com/2008/10/22/palins-150000-makeover-obamas-resoled-shoes/)

You know, I've found the commentary on this depressingly sexist. Yeah, women who hope to suceede in politics have to spend a lot of money on clothes, because if they don't they get torn apart by the media for that. And the article your previous commentor linked to is just asinine. Obama, a male politician, gets credit for having crappy shoes? Really? REALLY? Please. You don't think there's any male priviledge at work there that allows him to get away with that, while Clinton and Palin have media commenators guessing their dress size and what their hairstyles and make-up choices "say", instead of discussing their policies?

Luckily, they'll save cash, as you don't have children to exploit to use as mascots.

I've seen a lot of Obabma's two kids, and Biden's grandkids. Why is that okay for these "decent family men," but not for Palin?

Although I doubt Obama's shoes were cheap (depending on the price, they fall apart pretty quick), the fact that he didn't just toss them, bought got them resoled is far cheaper than buying a new fucking pair.

Because Palin's baby isn't old enough to be paraded constantly to show us how wonderful a fucking mother she is.

Though, fuck, I don't know what you've been watching, but the most I've seen of the Biden kids was one article, the most I've seen of Obama's kids was in THAT SAME article. Now, Palin? PALIN IS EVERYWHERE WITH HER BABY WHO IS SO SPECIAL.

I can open the Journal-Sentinel and she's mentioned carrying said child all over the place.

On another subject, entirely, DEAR OBAMA, PLEASE START HAVING SOME MONEY SCANDALS. Please.

[identity profile] frolicndetour.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah it's cheaper, and he gets to do that because he's a man and so has the advantage of not having to spend lots of money to have the right appearance. (Obviously his race and his middle name subject him to different kinds of prejudice, and that's just as unjust.)

I've seen the Obama rugrats on TV a lot, at the convention and other political events, which I have no problem with - all politicians do it. Biden had a flock of cute kids with him at the debate. Palin is playing the same game - plus, since her baby is, well, a baby, she really can't just leave him with a sitter for days at a time while she campaigns around the country, especially if she's breast-feeding.

I just think there are plenty of things to disagree with her on, and it doesn't have to boil down to haha, look at the girl. Which is what the national obsession with her warddrobe seems like to me.

On another subject, entirely, DEAR OBAMA, PLEASE START HAVING SOME MONEY SCANDALS. Please.

You mean besides "socialism"? ;] Well, he tried his hardest with Acorn, but it didn't seem to stick...

My obsession isn't WITH HER WARDROBE. My obsession (is it an obsession when it makes me want to cry at the waste?) is with HOW MUCH MONEY they are spending on it. I don't care who the money is being spent on, 150,000 IS SIX TIMES WHAT I MAKE IN A YEAR.

It's proof positive that the Republicans really don't GET what it's like to be poor, which is part of the fucking problem with this country. Not to mention,it's pretty damned obvious the Republicans don't want poor people voting (if they did, they'd hold rallies they could go to)--well, they want the racists and bigots voting, actually. Otherwise, we wouldn't be hearing about the 'american' sections of America, and McCain and Palin would be telling the racists "we don't want your vote, stfu." Which they're not doing.

I'd also point out that this sort of extravagant spending is something McCain himself used to speak out against.

The disconnect between what he says and what he does is phenomenal.

....BECAUSE HAVING DEATH THREATS CALLED OUT ON YOU IS JUST THE SAME THING AS BEING CALLED FRUMPY.

Okay, dude, I didn't say that, and you know it, and I'm pissed that you'd call me an idiot because I disagreed with you. Fuck that. Obviously, I think death threats are beyond the pale - and I've heard death threats and threats of violence against both Obama and Palin. Not McCain, for some reason. And I should not have to fucking explain that to you.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Be pissed. Today has sucked.

But you obviously don't remember the mountains of jokes and commentary that went on about the D. candidate four years ago, if you really think it's only the women they'd nail on that subject.

Do I think they nail them more? Sure. We still live in a male-dominated society, where there are neat little boxes people are shoved into.

I shall note that I need to edit, I've seen the Obama children in pictures now.

I'm also very well aware that enough people donated money that Obama's campaign made 60 times what I make in a year. And I'm curious about what he's going to do with any that's left over (I smell brewing scandal on the horizon).

I do, however, doubt that death threats against Palin included hanging her in effigy and slaughtering a bear cub. And if they did, please link me to them so I can be pissed about that, too.

But I really would like the Dems to have some massive scandal, so that I can stop rooting for either side again.

I'll still vote Obama. I'm fucking sick of White Republican Males fucking me over.

[identity profile] frolicndetour.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm voting Obama too, because I agree with him on more than I do with McCain on... virtually everything. I just don't see the campaign in terms of pure good and evil. Guess that makes me a minority.

I do, however, doubt that death threats against Palin included hanging her in effigy and slaughtering a bear cub. And if they did, please link me to them so I can be pissed about that, too.

I really don't feel like getting into a 'what oppression is most oppressive' contest. I already went to college. I was just acknowledging the fact that just because Obama is obviously benefiting from male privilege in this one respect, doesn't mean that people don't judge him because of his race or that fact that his dad was a Muslim. And I wasn't talking about the wacko-fringe who are killing bear cubs or fantasizing about raping Sarah Palin, but the milder, subconscious shit that's more equivalent to having the media obsess about your dress size or Andrew Sullivan bury his nose in your gynecological records for all the world to see. I don't know how you got from there to "having death threats called out on you is just the same as being called frumpy."

I'm sorry you had a bad day, and that you think I'm an idiot. I guess if you feel that strongly about politics, everyone who disagrees with you is either stupid or evil. I only think that about people who still support Bush. :) Eh, at least Obama will be president soon and we can get back to hating each other over fiction.

You know what's really funny? My brother was emailing about politics today, and he said something about how he doesn't like McCain but that he still really hates Bush. I wonder now, if any republican candidate would have been able to get out from under the Bush Screwed Us stigma.

I'm sorry for taking out my day on you, though. I don't think you're an idiot.

What's weird is that I'm being honest when I want a scandal. Or something. If they'd obsess over Obama's wardrobe (or McCain's or Biden's), and talk about how much was spent on XYZ, I'd feel like some of this wasn't so obviously targeting her because she's a woman.

I also actually am a little appalled at the RNC for deciding that Palin wasn't good enough in her own clothing and hair. (ok, a lot appalled)

Maybe one day, a woman will run for president in no make-up and blue jeans. *wistful*

[identity profile] frolicndetour.livejournal.com 2008-10-25 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really sorry too. Urrrgh.

What's weird is that I'm being honest when I want a scandal. Or something. If they'd obsess over Obama's wardrobe (or McCain's or Biden's), and talk about how much was spent on XYZ, I'd feel like some of this wasn't so obviously targeting her because she's a woman.

Well, Factcheck.org has some info to make you mildly disgusted with both candidates? (http://www.factcheck.org/archive/October_2008.html) And there is always Obama's reneging on his promise to take public funding and getting more wealthy donor's than Bush did. :P But yeah, no Saks. ;) (It's hard to imagine Obama at the center of a real scandal... but it's also hard to imagine a president with no scandals. What will the pundits have to talk about??)

Palin is tricky because on the one hand, I disagree with her on almost everything and I don't think she's ready to be President, but on the other hand, the crazy-intense hatred coming out of the blogosphere and MSNBC is disturbing, especially when you see it coming from the very same men (and a few women) who reacted identically to Clinton - and the only thing those two have in common is their gender. But, obviously, that's not you.

I also actually am a little appalled at the RNC for deciding that Palin wasn't good enough in her own clothing and hair. (ok, a lot appalled)

Seriously. I feel like they've done her a real disservice, actually - ASAIK she was a fine governor, but her political career is probably over. And all the criticism over this latest thing I've read has been directed at her - even though from everything I've read, she was really uncomfortable with the whole thing and plans to donate all the clothes to charity after the campaign. I blame the media and the Republican campaign "strategists." :P
