my headache is this big...

Dear Abortion-protesters outside of Planned Parenthood,

You seem to be missing the point. Since you care about those poor children so much, how about you go protest your conservative politicians who cut funding to things like welfare and medicaid? You know, the people who don't believe in sex education or birth control. How about protesting the lack of male birth control?

Or maybe you could protest about the lack of assistance for young women with small children.

Or, hey, we could make it legal that all men (and boys) reaching sexual maturity have to have mandatory vasectomies until they get married. And if they don't want kids then, well, they can keep their tubes disconnected.

But, no, you're not really worried about the children. Or about the women who are forced to have them and live on nothing. You're not worried about the children who grow up knowing they weren't wanted, or their mother was 13 when she got pregnant, or know that mama only got pregnant to keep a boyfriend who dumped her two months after she started showing. Or about how mama thought the pregnancy would keep their marriage together, but daddy still keeps hitting her and sleeping around on her.

You're just, y'know, worried about souls. Or something. I can't ever really tell, but you seem to be putting the onus of blame on those stupid sluts who can't keep their legs together, when, really, you should shoot yourselves in the head.

.

One day, I will figure out how to get a massive group of people together to steal your spot on the sidewalk. Maybe we'll dress as pirates, or as V. Maybe we'll have signs demanding that people 'Free the Conroy Seven'. Or maybe something about the lack of free chocolate. But we'll mass on your spot and mock the shit out of you so that maybe--

Just maybe--

Some of those poor women won't feel like criminals when all they want is birth control or counseling on what to do with their baby.

Hoping you all die in fires soon,
me.

ps. The first person to claim that voting for conservative politicians and against universal health care is helping those poor, downtrodden women who think sex is ok to have need to not even bother.

Fuck. Yes. Fuck. There's this group of anti-abortion protesters along a stretch of Powers Ferry every single morning, apparently (I never go that way early enough to see them, but we did last weekend). In front of some random office park, in which I can only guess there is an abortion clinic. White-hot rage. I want to go stand across from them with my own signs.

Screw standing across. Get there earlier and usurp their spot! ;] (which is why you need a large crowd, rar)

[identity profile] waterdaughter.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
True! I should look into getting a group out there, although I don't know really know enough people for a sizable one. But I bet I could find a NARAL chapter or something. Hmm.

Would totally join you if I lived close, though. ;) I even have pirate gear...

[identity profile] mrsdrjackson.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I will join you on that sidewalk. Just name the day.

Oh and also I just about died laughing at 'Free the Conroy Seven'. ;)

hah! I promise to give everyone cookies afterwards. (now I want to go find out what constitutes a mob, according to the city, so we don't get arrested for being a mob or whatever. hrm)

[identity profile] mrsdrjackson.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Cookies! Your group just tripled in size.

Hmmm. Yes. Getting arrested would put a cramp in our day, as it would mean giving up our spot on the sidewalk. Also, I would have to call my mom to bail me out. o_O

I like the pirates idea. Some signs / chants: "Save a woman! Keelhaul a prolifer!" "Avast! Randall Terry's Scurvy Oedipal Complex!" "Wenches for Women!" "Blackbeard Was an Unplanned Pregnancy!"

Could be fun.

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Wenches for Women! I am SO THERE.

I will have to borrow someone else's cleavage, however, for I have none.

Dude, if we put you in a corset and cinch that puppy, you might have enough.

Is that an offer? :D

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I got the pirates idea from the news report of that silly church getting mocked by pirates from across the street (I don't remember where I saw that, though. maybe unfunnybusiness)
ext_5608: (you were saying)

V. Definitely.

Count me in.

I can remember one year, coming home from Archon & there was this group protesting outside of the Planned Parenthood in Ballwin Plaza. They were all like "Abortion is evil!" and waving their signs, yet not even paying attention to the small children they brought with them.

I had 2 problems with this - this Planned Parenthood location does not do abortions - they hand out birth control & do female health exams & such, but no abortions. So, these people were protesting that birth control was wrong? WTF? Logic does not compute there. (Well, they're pro-lifers, who knows what they thought. :-p)

Secondly - location. They were marching up and down on the shoulder of Manchester Road, a very busy road and not paying attention to their own toddlers? That's a recipe for disaster right there. Too easy for a kid to fall off the narrow sidewalk there & get hit by a car doing 25 to 45 MPH.

Yeah, I'd love to stage a mock protest against pro-lifers. Should be fun. *eg*

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, but they don't care about the children! They just don't want them dying while in the womb. Tsk. Silly.

[identity profile] curlyjo1.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Pro-fetus. Once you're born, they don't give a crap. Especially if you're a woman. Then you're only good as an incubator.
ext_18106: (Annie Lennox gender?)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. This, yes. And, you know, I don't actually like abortion. BUT DAMMIT. The right to choose should not be in the hands of middle-aged white men who have no stake in the matter.

[identity profile] curlyjo1.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like it either, but what the politicians don't get (or don't want to get) is that you can't have no sex education and no abortions. If there is no sex education, then of course there will be more unplanned and unwanted pregnancies. If they want to cut down on the abortions, then they need to educate people better.

But that's not really what they care about at all.

[identity profile] raincitygirl.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I am SO crashing that party, and I have pirate-y cleavage.

[identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd crash that party with a vengeance, but I'm a thousand or so miles away!

God, anti-choice people make me crazy with anger at their hypocrisy.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, I know. And, yes. They anger me sometimes to the point of seriously wanting to throw things at them. (luckily, I'm usually so tired that the only thing I can do is glare balefully as I drive by)

[identity profile] kiri-l.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm somewhere in all this.. and also amny many miles away. but I'd be there in a flash if available.

Bright idea. coordinate a string of counter protests across the country. If only to highlight the stupid.

ext_18106: (Annie Lennox gender?)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I would love to get a string of counter-protests going. I fear it would be less easy than it sounds, though. Sigh. Mostly because fandom is harder to herd than tigers.

Ha! Your comment and icon. Yes.

Well, being one of those evil fandom feminists as I am...

[identity profile] zahdahe.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Lyssie I love you woman. Sometimes people need to *THINK AND THINK SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY*about the decisions they make. Not the women trying to make things work in impossible situations. The jackasses on the pavements causing obstructions and pretending to care - cos they don't. Any form of birth control is a woman's choice. What most of them don't seem to consider is that any choice you make concerning a child whether keeping or not is not any easy one. But I bet they even understand the stress people go through, when making them. Aren't these the same people who are against terminations but advocate the killings of doctors, nurses and support staff. Glass Houses People!

Still fucking arseholes.

[identity profile] lilacsigil.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
My state just voted (http://www.theage.com.au/national/abortion-to-be-legal-after-mps-back-controversial-bill-20081010-4xxn.html) to make all abortions up to 24 weeks legal, and after that, legal on the advice of two doctors. (Currently, all abortions are technically illegal, though there haven't been any arrests in a long, long time, apart from one doctor who didn't report the rape of an intellectually disabled woman. Aggressively anti-choice politicians still try to witch-hunt abortion providers and women who have late-term abortions, though.)

The Catholics and other pro-lifers are throwing fits, despite majority support for the change, but I'm so, so happy to live in a sane and decent place where politicians will go on public record voting to help women despite the emotional blackmail of "OMG TEH BABEEZ".

[identity profile] snaphappy.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Very well said, thanks.

[identity profile] viciouswishes.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What always pisses me off is about the protester and the entire pro-life movement is that they only care about the fetus and keeping a woman's reproductive organs in tack so she can have more children. (The entire pre-pregnancy legislation that was pushed through by the Bush administration makes my skin crawl.) Once the child is born, it's just another drag on the system and reason to call a woman who needs assistant a "lazy welfare mother." Someone needs to tell them that they can't have their cake and eat it too.
