warning: rant about a song
I was in Barnes and Noble today (sidenote: OMG BOOKS. Did not buy. BUT WANTED.) and vaguely paying attention to the music, when one of the phrases made me pause and stare at the shelf in front of me.
With disbelief, I listened as, again, the female singer happily proclaimed that "one day" she would meet a man and get married and change her name. All with the happy inference that it was the only thing she ever wanted or needed to do with her life. Ever. To affirm this message, it was repeated as a refrain four or fives times before the song ended.
Given the style, it was a current artist.
Given the message, I was offended. I don't get offended easily, but, really? A song basically saying, "Girls, chuck in the idea of being anything but a man's wife, 'cause that's all you can do, yay!" is pretty fucking offensive.
I was late leaving to go back to work, but I was almost angry enough to actually voice a complaint.
