warning: rant about a song

I was in Barnes and Noble today (sidenote: OMG BOOKS. Did not buy. BUT WANTED.) and vaguely paying attention to the music, when one of the phrases made me pause and stare at the shelf in front of me.

With disbelief, I listened as, again, the female singer happily proclaimed that "one day" she would meet a man and get married and change her name. All with the happy inference that it was the only thing she ever wanted or needed to do with her life. Ever. To affirm this message, it was repeated as a refrain four or fives times before the song ended.

Given the style, it was a current artist.

Given the message, I was offended. I don't get offended easily, but, really? A song basically saying, "Girls, chuck in the idea of being anything but a man's wife, 'cause that's all you can do, yay!" is pretty fucking offensive.

I was late leaving to go back to work, but I was almost angry enough to actually voice a complaint.

...that just literally drove me to drink. No, really, I read this and automatically reached for my flask full of vodka and took a long pull.

Oy.

Ew, ew, ew, ew. My local radio station got so offensive with both songs and ads that we now have a work iPod, which we all put "worksafe" songs on and groove all day, ad free. It makes me really startled when I walk into other shops and they have crap music on!

Ew.

That is fucked up.

So this record says that's all she wants in her future! She is so infected with the STUPID! Being married and changing names is the pinnacle of her ambition. Send her round to my house and I will TEACH her how to have other OPTIONS! Music like that is going the corrupt the upcoming generation of females and turn them into drones of MEGA-STUPID! Getting married is not the be-all and end-all of life. If it is I am so FUCKED!

Reminds me of Anya's song in "Selfless", except the show didn't portray that as a positive, ie. Anya's been clinging to what comes along in life (be it Olaf, vengeance, or Xander) instead of figuring out her own identity.
