random Lord of the Rings...

I randomly watched all three movies yesterday (with copious amounts of fast-forwarding Sam and Frodo).

1. Sam and Frodo = still boring.

2. OMG THESE MOVIES ARE SO GAY. BOYS. STOP LOOKING LONGINGLY AT EACH OTHER.

3. If I were to actually do a version of LotR m'slf, I'd re-image it and gender-swap 70% of the fellowship along with putting non-white people in the movie. Hell, if I were feeling really radical, I'd gender-swap everyone.

4. I had not actually seen the extended bits of Two Towers and RotK. Wacky.

So, you'd have, what, 3? 4? men in the entire 3 movies? *imagines LotR with a Fellowship of awesome, kickass women* Why can't we have Nice Things?

Yep.

And there would be men! They'd just be the ones screaming and useless and helpless.

Again, I ask, "Why can't we have Nice Things?"

Who would you cast?

Off the top of my head:

Gina Torres, Claudia Black, Keira Knightly, Gigi Edgley (Legolas), Kandyse McClure, Angela Bassett (Gandalf, baby)...

And we can't have nice things, because everyone knows that women only like movies like Sex and the City.

*makes grabby hands* Do Want.

because everyone knows that women only like movies like Sex and the City.

If I'm wrong, I don't want to be right. Else, I'm apparently failing at being a girl. (But damn, I'm the one who gets called for powertools, and NOT the guys I live with. *is very smug*)

As do I. Sigh.

Oh, I totally fail at being a girl. I love (almost) all female characters, for instance.

Ni @ work

70%, huh? Which members of the Fellowship have you got in mind?

Aragorn, Boromir, Frodo, Gandalf, Gimli, Merry, Legolas.

Oh, but there ARE non-white people in the movies, silly Lyssie. Look at the evil Orcs and the even-eviller Uruk-Hai. See, Jackson is totally all about diversity and colourblind casting.

Oh, how could I forget that white and pretty = good and everything else = evil?

Tsk. Bad me.

(sigh)

It's a good thing you have me around to remind you of these things, or where would you be? Thinking for yourself, probably, and we all know that would never do.

I have no reply other than to say I might kill to be able to cast Angela Basset as Gandalf.

Ooh, YUMMY!

re: #2, YES. Even to a nonshipping, bookcanon-lovin' preteen that stuff was obvious.

You should definitely have a member of the Fellowship from Harad (the pseudo-Arabian area). Possibly a female one.

I was very anti-slash back then (still mostly am), so I blocked it all out.

Well, that, too. But I don't care what Tolkien says about the genetic makeup of ME. All girls, all from every color of the rainbow.

I agree; those movies were the best naps I've ever had.

OK!

Recasting my fandoms all-girl is a habit of mine, but I had never considered LOTR. And now I can't stop seeing Alfre Woodard as Denethor and wondering who would play Saruman.
