Nearly-dead too many times to count:

Girlfriends who have been nearly MIA.

I'd heard that, I think. And I'm pleased she's got a gig elsewhere. =]

Yes. YES, EXACTLY.

I have written that fic, but HERA was the Pythia, the last time. Or Roslin. I don't remember anymore.

And, y'know, if I weren't brain-dead, I'd consider fic.

My Torchwood TV girlfriend is unfortunately on the list. Woe.

[identity profile] frolicndetour.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
It heartens me that you're only counting Natalie as "nearly dead."

I don't want to beat the "kill some men" drum too much because I know when they do I won't like that either, but it really is ridiculous that the last recognizable-to-me (and I pay a fair amount of attention) male character we lost was Jammer, given the rate at which they're mowing down the women.

*laughs* Until someone pronounces her dead, dammit!

I said to [livejournal.com profile] aj earlier tonight that, since the season started? 0 men killed. 5 women.

KILL SOME MEN, RON.

Cally, Mathias, Barolay, and maybe (!) Natalie - so four, right? Or am I forgetting somebody. *bad fan*

The Six and the Eight. Oh. And Emily. So, technically, six women. Natalie makes seven. If she dies. (the first two weren't my tv girlfriends, they didn't really have time to become one)

[identity profile] frolicndetour.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, gotcha. I was only counting established female characters. But even just with them, in two seasons that's Ellen, Kat, Cally, Matthias, and Jean, vs. Duck and Jammer. (Kara and D'Anna too, but they came back/probably will come back, so it's sort-of okay.)

So yes. How about boxing all of Team Cavil? That'd help.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
All of Team C. need to go. Now. and someone should brainwash Boomer back to sanity.

And Kendra, if you count the movie as part of the last two seasons (similarly, does Rhade Camulus Cain's XO count?)

*uses happy Cally icon*

I know, right? My poor girl. I kind of went on a Cally-icon spree after Ties That Bind. Apparently writing fanfic about her made me get attached. Who knew? :/

See, now I don't trust NCIS at all, and I'm sort of glad I didn't watch this season. They really broke my heart with Kate's death (although, yes, I know the actor wanted to leave), but then Jen too? Screw it. I'll catch it in repeats.

*shrugs* You don't like Ziva anyway, so why bother?

[identity profile] surreallis.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I don't dislike her. I'm just neutral toward her. I might have gotten into her more if I hadn't been so disgruntled over Kate.

HOLY CRAP JENNY IS DEAD WTF?

(Don't worry, I know you warned for spoilers.) That is just so out of left field, omg. OMG! Do I want to watch this episode? I can't believe NCIS killed off another main female character. I just lost a favourite character from another show, too, (Amber, and fuck you House) and I broke up with BSG after they killed Callie and... what is with all the dead women?

Yeah, I don't think I'm watching this. Thanks though, that would have been horrible to come up against without warning.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually. Unlike almost every other show out there? I find NCIS' treatment of its female characters to be pretty damned awesome.

The first half of the episode is the Jenny Shepard is Awesome Show, and it's actually lovely and gorgeous and heart-breaking. The second half is everyone dealing with it, mourning, and nailing the person (at least, that's what I guess, since I missed most of it and the dvr didn't record)

When I watch BSG, I get this impression: "Don't be a woman with lines, personality or a life, you'll die."

When I watch NCIS, I get this impression: "Life sucks, take everyone out with you when you go."

I can't speak to House, since I stopped watching sometime in season two. There's only so many times it can't be lupus.

There's a fine line between NCIS and BSG in their treatment. NCIS respects its women. BSG just thinks of them as another commodity.

[identity profile] ijemanja.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I wouldn't count NCIS among shows which have horrible gender issues either. Certainly not in relation to main characters, anyway. (Guest roles, on the other hand, are more of a mixture.) And certainly not compared to BSG and House.

As I said, I broke up with BSG a few episodes ago, I just didn't want to deal with it anymore. Too much rage. Oh, and actually, technically, House killed off TWO of the main women in the season finale - one dying tragically and causing much potential for angst between House and Wilson (because really what would be the point, otherwise, of her having existed in the first place) and another finding out she has a terminal disease. Fairly high on my skeeve-meter all round -- as well as being just really, really sad.

I found it - the tragic death - really upsetting. I don't think I can deal with losing another character I love right now, no matter how it's handled. So I might watch the NCIS ep eventually, but not right now. Thanks for the extra info. :)

(I also wonder now whether Lauren Holly wanted to leave the show - if she did, at least it would help a little from the 'expendable women' angle.)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I'm wondering if Holly wanted more money, or was more expensive. Too, the end of the episode had the new director breaking up the team and giving Gibbs three new kids to teach, so maybe they're cutting costs?

It's really obvious the new show-runner is feeling its wings. I liked the episode, and the one before, but there does seem to be more emphasis on Shocking New Developments.

[identity profile] gordon-r-d.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I am in denial about the new director breaking the team. I predict either Jim Robinson will return and bitchslap him or Abbie will spread doctored photos of him with his knob in Bert The Hippo to discredit him or something,

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Abby.

And I'm actually ok with breaking up the team, even if it strikes me as "OMG DRAMUH" akin to the stupidest stuff in BSG.

[identity profile] gordon-r-d.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I keep doing that with Abby's name. *slaps self*

I keep making a vow to only watch TV when the show has finished its run so I can be sure they don't kill off my TV girlfriends. Or, at least, don't kill off to many of them.

I HAVE NEVER FORGIVEN WHEDON FOR KILLING CORDELIA AND ANYA. NEVER.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'd known about Anya. I didn't know about Cordy. Guess it's good my personal, official, canon ends sometime during Angel season two and Buffy season five.

I'm still really ticked about them killing Barolay.

I am unhappy they killed my KICKASS WARRIOR WOMAN Sgt Mathias I am in mourning cantankerous mourning ( sob!)

I think I'm still incoherent with rage, honestly.

[identity profile] gordon-r-d.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Barolay was Seelix for a moment and may have shouted "No Seelix, don't go with them to the ship!" out of fear only to realise later it wasn't her and she was relatively safe.

I may also have shouted at Kara to make sure she didn't mess Seelix's Viper up.

I am sad, yes?
ext_18106: (Default)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Because a lot of us thought Barolay was Seelix during Road Less Traveled.
