*tries to be with the sense-making, re: Sam Anders' actions in 'Faith'*

Er, spoilers. Obvsly.

So, I mentioned this last night, but was way too sleepy to articulate it: Sam is living on borrowed time.

There's always been a sense that he's very fatalistic--he's survived two occupations and resistances. He's survived his marriage to Kara, and he's a Cylon. I tend to think he sometimes wakes up and goes why am I not dead yet?

And with Kara, he... he would never consider betraying her. Even now, when she's insane and uncertain, he can't conceive of it. She saved his life. She gave him hope that there was more to survival than just endless recons and pointless raids. She was coming back for him. And then, frak, but she did it. On top of that, he's always believed in her: she can take the arrow and find Earth. It was a simple concept, and he believed in it.

He believes she can find Earth now. He also believes she'll kill him if she finds out he's a Cylon.

And then everyone mutinies. Sam might only half-believe Leoben, but Kara thinks they need to go there. And Sam thinks they need the alliance. He's desperate to prove that humans and Cylons CAN co-exist, if only because then Sam himself isn't totally irredeemable. (fatalistic or not, if he dies, does his soul go to the Gods, or do machines not have souls?)

He tries reason, tries pointing out that this is wrong, that Adama isn't going to be so kind--

Hell, he doesn't even know what Adama will do, but he's sure of one thing: the opportunity to save the Cylons, to start this movement towards an alliance, to maybe find another clue towards Earth is slipping away.

They're not listening, make them listen.

I don't think Gaeta had any clue that Sam had pulled his side-arm. I don't think the others noticed, either.

At this point, the only thing that will make them listen is something big, something shocking.

So Sam shoots him. In that moment, all that matters is getting them to listen. Sam doesn't care if he gets shot (he never even tries to go for cover), he doesn't care (at that moment) what they think of him, he just wants to stop the jump before it can happen.

It's not a cold-blooded decision, it's not a happy one, and he regrets it ten seconds later.

As a side note: does anyone have any idea how long Sam's been awake? He was out on a long-ass recon last week and came back and still has not slept. They were gone 15 hours, so that's on top of what was probably an eight-hour recon, and another four or five hours awake as they beat up Leoben and locked down the ship and--he's been awake one hell of a long time, and so has everyone else.

Sleep deprivation does bad things to your logic abilities.

Anyway.

They're not listening, make them listen.
How do I make them listen?
Shoot someone.
Gaeta's going to jump us.
Stop him.

It's funny to me that Helo was telling the marines to stand down--and Seelix, too. Seelix, would you actually have shot Sam? Sgt. Mathias would have. She's already held Sam at gunpoint before (funny, how Sam always gets in the most trouble when his loyalty to Kara is put to the test). If Lee had given the order, back on the algae planet, she would have shot him.

Sigh. Now I want to know what kind of fall-out Sam's going to get for shooting Gaeta. Or, better yet, just a nice alone-time scene with him and Kara, where he worries she'll figure him out.

Ooo ooh, I'm reminded, Sam mentioned having seen lots of people die before--with the Eight. I maintain Sam has also been the hand of mercy for any people on Caprica he encountered that weren't going to survive due to radiation poisoning.

I think Helo understands all of what you just said and that's why he tells the marines to stand down. Sam is beyond tired, the situation was very edgy and it just...happened. If you look at Sam in the seconds after you can see the "Oh frak what did I just do???" cross his face.

I don't know that the fall-out for shooting Gaeta is going to matter much once the Three's are un-boxed. o_O

Yes, yes to all of this.

Especially to a scene next week between Sam & Kara. And also a scene next week with Sam reunited with Tigh, Tory and Tyrol.

I do think that there will be major fall out for Sam regarding shooting Gaeta. And when Gaeta finds out that he got shot by a Cylon, it's not going to be pretty.

And one other point regarding Sam on the Basestar. Kara wanted Sam to go with her to the Hybrid. I think Sam must have realized that it probably wasn't a very good idea for the Hybrid to meet him, and made up a bullshit excuse to stay behind. Good boy. But I'm glad that Kara wanted him there.

Best episode yet this season. I wish Sam had put his hand in the datastream. I think he maybe touched it for a split second, if that.

Oh, yeah. I actually have spec fic, from when [livejournal.com profile] greycoupon was relaying the 'preview' to me during the day, of Helo staring at Sam and just--remembering that Sam isn't just some easy-going jock.

And the situation just spiraled the hell out of control, and--

I think Sam pretty much regretted it, even though he thought it was the only way to get them to stop. The marines were nearly there, and they'd lock Kara up, and he'd lose his chance.

I don't need another sekrit bffs meeting. But. I would very much LOVE a scene with Sam and Kara, interacting. Even if it's just her telling him to frak off or whatever.

Sam's excuse for staying behind was interesting. Just how much HAS that boy picked up about raptors in the two months Kara's been dead? And Kara just assumes he's telling the truth! I love it! also, she may think it's kinda hot

When Gaeta finds out Sam's a Cylon, that... man. Sam might think Kara will shoot him. Gaeta will shoot him, without any chance for appeal.

He nearly did. I haven't slowed it down or anything, but I think if he had made contact, there'd've been a reaction, of some sort.

Ack.

I think it was a hard day to be Sharon Agathon, too. She's had her loyalties questioned so many times, and now Kara wants to pull her right back to the place she used to be.

Sam, I think, follows orders when they suit him (this explains how he and Kara get along so well). And up until the mutiny, most orders suited him. I've been hoping we'd see him be a bit rebellious, though I think that may be the last of it (if you can call it rebellious).

And, and, YES, the basestar might also help him to understand who and what he is.

One of the many reasons Sam is great is that even though in the quieter moments he's got all this crazy stuff going on, when there's immediate need for reaction, he's right there getting it done. He's the kind of guy that you forgive for the rash moments because you know where his heart is.

*nods* This is true.

Maybe not if it was just a split second, since thought is involved. Whichever.

the opportunity to save the Cylons, to start this movement towards an alliance, to maybe find another clue towards Earth is slipping away.

Yup. And he's always sensed Kara had a destiny, as he told her after she found the Mandala. So he knows what's at stake.

Helo at least knew Sam had a gun; you can see him put his hands up. But Gaeta's back was turned. I don't think you can fire a warning shot on a space-ship, and they were a spilt second away from jump, so... even though all those mitigating circumstances apply, I'm not so sure Sam did the wrong thing. Helo could have ordered Gaeta to stop, but I guess he didn't think Sam would actually fire.

It's funny to me that Helo was telling the marines to stand down--and Seelix, too.

Helo was a little naive in thinking they could have a mutiny without anyone getting hurt. But thank god he and Kara both put all their crap aside to keep things from escalating.

I honestly don't think he had a choice...I just hope that the Admiral sees it that way.
