Wednesday is at least one day closer to Friday?

And no work? sigh.

Racetrack fic, spoilers for 4.4: http://lint138.livejournal.com/231967.html

You know one of the things I hate most from newskool Who? It's this idea that women meet the Doctor and then forevermore are hollow shells without him.

You know what I'd like to see in the new series?

Like... any of the old male companions, in exactly the same sort of predicament.

Or, you know, Ace kicking ass and not being 'hollow' at all.

Jack's already been shown to be. Just cos they cut the "You too, huh?" line to Martha in the U.S. edition. *seethes*

[identity profile] timjr.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant the old ones, old ones ;) Along the lines of Sarah Jane in School Reunion. Though she's a sort of... anomaly when it comes to characterization.

[identity profile] rosewildeirish.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. I could never get into oldskool!Who. Not sure why.

[identity profile] timjr.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a bit camp and the effects leave a lot to be desired?

I love Old School, but acknowledge it's now sort of an acquired taste to modern audiences.

[identity profile] rosewildeirish.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. That and I think not only was it a bit too British for my younger mindset, but you always seemed to be coming in the middle of a story. Irritating, that.

[identity profile] timjr.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Heheh. And me, growing up (or, even now) there is no such thing as 'too British'.

[identity profile] rosewildeirish.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrugs* What can I say...I have room for improvement, apparently. *g*

[identity profile] timjr.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone does. After all, my Anglophile tendencies end up with me watching things that get very long, funny looks from my roommates. (Life on Mars, The Mighty Boosh, that sort of thing)

I'm sure any of the males who show up will not have been hollow without the Doctor.

Jack doesn't count, he's bi.

*snerk*

Alas, you're probably right.

Yeah, that's a little creepy. Please tell me it's not like that with old school stuff. Because then I can just go watch the old school stuff and be much happier.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, old-skool sort of assumes everyone goes on to be productive, upbeat members of society (if a little idiosyncratic in their life-choices). And mostly it's the companions who choose to go. They grow up and move on, it's the Doctor who doesn't.

*headdesk* I really am liking the sound of old school more and more these days, I am.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
New-skool kinda lost me a while back. Great production values, dodgy social values. Especially about the wimminfolk. Get some old-skool, you'd be quite happy with that.

I did kinda buy a couple DVDs of old school for Mr. Havoc for his birthday. I really need to get some more, though.)

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sweet. Which ones didja get? :)

Resurrection of the Daleks and Remembrance of the Daleks. The first one is Peter Davidson as the Doctor (er, the Fourth Doctor?), the second one is Sylvester McCoy (Seventh?), and I got that because it deals with 1963 and Mr. Havoc has the First Doctor boxed set.

...you can tell I'm late to this whole Doctor Who thing. You really can.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter Davison is Five; Four is the classic big-hair-long-scarf one. :) I think you'd really like the Seven DVDs, which indeed the second one is. (Pretty much all the Seven eps out on DVD are the really top-notch ones, too.) I'm trying to decide whether you'd secondarily be a Three, Four, or Five fan, and I'm not sure. Four's got a really strong run of companions, Three's got the UNIT era thing going on, and Five... well, honestly, I think he was better in other things, but a lot of people love Peter Davison, and he might be your cup of tea.

In conclusion, watch Remembrance right now, and it'll make you feel better about Who. :)

Y're welcome! I was pleased to find Racetrack fic, and decided everyone should read it, toooo.

Martha's not exactly hollow, Sarah Jane Smith has totally made a life for herself now and Donna just is really growing on me as a very good character. Martha has grown since the "year that never was."

And yes, the pilot for Sarah Jane was kinda campy, but the show totally takes off from the pilot. It's still aimed for a younger audience, but it's something adults can watch too and still enjoy - especially in that it's in the 1/2 hour old Who serial format.

Donna, when she leaves, I don't think will be hollow. She came into this eyes wide open and will take away an adventure of a life time and maybe we'll see her staying behind on Earth to fight the bad guys like Torchwood or UNIT, but she won't be pining w/ a broken heart after the Doctor. She's too old for that, I think. (And, it's about time we get a companion who's not pining away! Catherine Tate & David Tennant just have this wonderful best friends chemistry that I think RTD won't ruin by making Donna have another unrequited crush on the Doctor.)

Yeah. That's what I thought about Martha.

I don't consider SJA canon. I do consider her telling the Doctor her life was meaningless without him in SR canon.

You know what I'm loving about newskool Who? The idea that the Doctor met Donna and will forevermore be a hollow shell without her. And...she still won't fall for him, knowing this.

*loves Donna*

[identity profile] rosewildeirish.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
...I also think if needs be, she'll beat some sense into Martha. WRT Rose, I'm just hoping she beats her. Sorry, sorry. My bias is showing.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm hoping it stays that way.

[identity profile] thirdblindmouse.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. That annoys the fuck out of me. I thought Donna was going to be interesting, but then this season began and we learned how empty her life was as a single woman with no cock of her own without the Doctor.
ext_18106: (Default)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not so sure I'd classify Donna's problem as needing the Doctor. It's more that traveling around Earth is boring package holidays. But it is Rusty, who thinks men and women can't be friends, ever, so. I'm sure she'll want to have sex and babies with him soon.

[identity profile] thirdblindmouse.livejournal.com 2008-05-01 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Single women are purposeless, lesbians are evil, and for some unimaginable reason they all want Owen. ...Nope, I don't trust him to handle any female characters well.

I've actually not hated the one s4 episode I've seen. I've just lost a lot of the love I had for the show. Sigh.

ACE IS AWESOME. Even before she became a space pirate mercenary. (but, uh, Romana is prettier. *is so shallow*)
