If you ignore the person who comes in later and trashes Elizabeth in the comments, it's a fairly awesome post.

Why thank you. To be fair, the show(at least in season 1) spends so much time trying to convince us that everything really is her fault and the boys are perfect and blameless that I almost can't blame people for falling for the line. Honestly, conceptually, the woman is about the most awesome thing ever, but they're so paranoid of either a civilian in charge or a woman in charge(or both) that I spent half of season 1 just wanting to curl up in a corner and cry.

OH, THANK GOD. I spent time reading the comments crankily, and hoping you weren't going to be "oh, in season two we should throw Weir into a black hole too."

Frankly, I love Elizabeth. And Teyla. And Ronon. (And Cadman and Kate.) My nerves are a little raw about SGA these days, though, especially on the female character bashing side of things.

Let me put it this way: after season 1, they could have her accidentally blow up a solar system, and I wouldn't hold it against her.

I haven't met Ronon yet(I'll start s2 in the next couple days, I think) and cadman and Kate sound familiar, but I'm not sure...do they have small roles in season 1, or have I just heard them mentioned a lot?

I don't think moiraj was really trying to bash Elizabeth, just point out that she does make mistakes later on, too, though nothing as bad as the whole setting the Wraith loose on the galaxy thing. For that matter, I find it hard to imagine her doing something to top STEALING THE DEVICE PROTECTING AN ENTIRE PLANET FOR THE WRAITH, FIGURING IT WOULDN'T HURT THINGS AS LONG AS YOU PUT IT BACK!!! (I still can't believe they pulled that...honestly, how anyone could think either of them should be let loose on an unsuspecting galaxy...)

Laura Cadman only shows up in season two, but Kate Heightmeyer's the psychiatrist who first shows up in The Gift (1.18). She's highly awesome, despite the tendency for certain aspects of this fandom to insult every attribute or to diminish her capabilities. (To which I reply: Oh, fuck it all, like *your* favorite characters were never poorly written?)

Well, they all make mistakes. And Elizabeth makes some big ones. It sounded - to me - that she was saying that Elizabeth goes downhill entirely during second season. OTOH, I don't know moiraj, and you do, so I"ll grant I've committed a possible misinterpretation of her intentions. :)

And I think you'll enjoy Ronon, though his character doesn't come into his own as much until season three. He's good in season two, don't get me wrong, but he has more shining moments in season three.

Ok, then Kate I liked and was hoping she'd be around more. I now try to ignore fandoms' instinctive dislike for female characters. There are legitimate criticisms for most female characters, just like there are for most male characters. However, it's taboo to have problems with male characters, but the right thing to do to criticize and dismiss female characters out of hand. Or so I'm told by regular implication. And almost everytime I see a female character criticized by someone I know/am familiar with, I've seen them defend male characters with the same traits. (Prime example from when I watched s1: 'Sheppard is a great character and should be forgiven because he's out of his league and he wasn't initially qualified, but he's trying. Weir is too indecisive and wishy washy. She's out of her league and doesn't know what she's doing.' How does a person essentially say that and not realize what they're doing?)

I look forward to Ronon. If nothing else, he's pretty.

Kate is awesome, though I spent a lot of time gritting my teeth and ignoring the fandom's dislike for her. Oh, whatever, people. Being out of her depth does NOT equal, say, some of the shit that Rodney pulls in season two. But what do I know, right? (Ah, sarcasm. I love you so.)

THANK YOU. I appreciate that you can notice these discrepancies. I'm just so TIRED of calling people on them. I really am. So mostly I hang out with people who love female characters a lot. This makes me happy.

Ronon's very pretty. And once they let Jason move the acting somewhat out of the realm of stereotype, Ronon becomes even more awesome.

Teyla should be in charge of everything, srsly.

I can't honestly get excited over any of the characters, though, because ...SGA? I try, I really do, but I keep finding myself personifying not only the city ("Weir/Atlantis OTP!"), but also the show itself ("Sheppard is definitely in a BDSM relationship with SGA"), and its fandom ("Aw, whosa cracky widdle fandom? You are!") in my search for something to sing squee about.
