BSG and injuries...

Because I've seen more than a few comments about a recent one... season 4 spoilers.

Sam Anders injured his leg. We don't know what kind of break it was, we don't know how bad. He's had, what, seven weeks since the event? So it's not a complete stretch he'd be walking around with no limp, though I think he'd still need a little PT and muscle-rebuilding.

That said, this isn't the first time BSG has handwaved major injuries.

1. Cally got gutshot in Bastille Day, and was back on the line with no visible problems in Act of Contrition. They were still on water ops at that point, and I doubt more than a week or two had passed.

2. Kara's knee got frakked up, and while all of season one was spent showing her limping around, the instant season two started, the limp was gone, and there wasn't any indication that it was giving her a problem anymore.

3. Kara's burned hands. I honestly assumed, when they burned her hands that Kara wouldn't ever fly again. Nope. One episode later, she's perfectly fine.

So, really, Sam's leg being magically ok is just par for the course.

Cally was gutshot? O_o

Like, third episode of the show. Not recently.

I honestly don't remember her being gutshot. I reviewed scenes from Bastille Day umpteen times for my Cally/Tyrol video and while I recall she was in sick bay (or whatever it's called), I didn't realize it was for a gunshot wound.

Cally's been shot, had her jaw broken, and been ejected into space.

She's rather resilient, actually...

*snerk*

Actually, given Tyrol's bouncing back from the whole 'in space' thing compared to her, it's a pretty safe bet she isn't.

Huh. I could've sworn I saw him limping around pretty noticeably at the beginning of 4x0whateveritis, to the point where I sort of assumed that in the penultimate scene he was down on the floor because he couldn't get back up right away . . .

I actually didn't notice, but, uh, I was on my third Mike's by then, too. And I've only watched squinty-vision since the beginning. BUT HAH. I bet we can blame Trucco for the continuity. ;]

Oh, I'm not saying that I won't handwave (I like that you bring up past injuries)...but the man was literally in the inflatey knee brace THE SCENE BEFORE we see him hopping into his viper. It's like they don't even have a script supervisor (or anyone else in charge of continuity).

And bring in the issue of when Kara hurt -her- leg, and Papa Adama's being a hardass about her being able to properly apply pressure to... whatever pedal...

I think they killed the continuity supervisor. Or she gave up and ran away a long time ago.

AHAHAH. Yeah. I kinda figure it's like... Kobol. Kara's got her leg bugging her, then she fights Six and... her leg never bothers her again.

But it's NOT handwaved. He's limping in the talk with Tyrol at the beginning. And the rest of the time we only see him walking a few steps at a time. he also may have a bit of a problem getting through the hatch when he first see him, but that could just be me reading too much into it.

Yes, I checked. Am pathetic like that.

But really the granddaddy of them all has to be Adama who had frakkin chest surgery, and while he was sort of breathy and weak at first, he was down on Kobol walking around just fine no more than, what, a week after he woke up? Yeah, right.

I don't know whether or not to thank you for confirming that (in this instance at least) I'm not crazy.

[identity profile] lizardbeth-j.livejournal.com 2008-04-08 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
No, you're not crazy! I thought I was, because SO many people were saying the injury was gone, I was like, "But, but, I thought I saw..." Then I went back and checked. It's subtle (maybe too subtle) but it's there. I'm fond of your idea that it's why he didn't get up again before she clocked him, btw.

In any case, I'm sure the limp will be gone soon enough. ;)

[identity profile] rhi-silverflame.livejournal.com 2008-04-08 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha. I figure if he were really intent on stopping her, a former Pyramid player wouldn't have any problems with trying to go for a leg-tackle from that position unless something was physically impairing him.

We'll just assume that sort of thing's legal in Pyramid. Whatever -- even if it wasn't legal he'd probably know how to do it anyway.

It's either that or, y'know, he's just kind of a dork when it comes to Kara and thinks he can talk her down.

And yeah, it'll probably be gone soon enough. ;)

Well, good, then. (no, really, I wasn't paying attention. I've seen people talking about it, and assumed the worst).

And, good call on Adama. I'd forgotten that.

[identity profile] ellestra.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I assumed his leg was one of the reasons he wasn't on the first batch of vipers and also the reason why he was so green in viper but as you've said it's been a while since he got injured. His leg was probably already fine - that's the purpose of leg braces and such - to safely take you from crippled to just stiff. I'm speaking as someone who took her cask off by herself, twice.
So I just assumed he simply took it off.

I think he might have needed PT, but. Dude, I don't know about this sort of thing. Sigh.

...this post restarts me secretly wishing for the show to reveal Julie Stewart as a (by now the final) Cylon. Because of that episode of Cold Squad where Ali McCormick got skewered through the arm in a car crash, and in the next she was fine.

Anders was a professional athlete back before the attack.

Those types tend to heal quite a bit faster than us softer folk.
