fic: newbsg, Ears and No, fluffy fluff

Disclaimer: not mine.
Set: Handwavey Earth AU
Characters: Sam Anders, Billy Keikaya, Hera Agathon
Pairing: (tangentially) Kara/Sam, Sharon/Helo
Length: 1300+
Genre: fluff.
Notes: I... don't remember who I started this for, but I'm certain the gratuitous Billy is for [livejournal.com profile] aj. Sam the neurotic is my own fault. I do know this was inspired by the guy with his adorable son at lunch, though. And my brother and his kids. The 'ears' is also [livejournal.com profile] aj's fault, and can be laid at her door forever and ever.

Ears and No
by ALC Punk!

Small children were a trial. Sam Anders was discovering this fact as he tried to get Hera Agathon to eat her lunch. It was the fleet's forty-seventh day on Earth and Sharon had asked him to watch her while she and Karl did their patrols, both unable to get out of work, and unwilling to leave her at daycare. Earth was too new to them all, still.

It was not going well.

He'd nearly lost Hera when they first walked into the food place (there was a play area near the back and Sam had barely kept her from running back there) and she'd been unhelpful when they'd ordered--luckily, there were kid-sized meals, and Sam figured she'd eat some of one of them.

"Eat your fries, sweetie," Sam told her, waving one while he tried to eat his own burger with the other hand.

"No!" Hera replied, clapping. She grabbed a piece of her burger, "Ears!"

"Yes, you have ears," Sam agreed, hoping she'd eat the piece, this time.

She didn't. Hera giggled and slapped her hand on the table, spreading ketchup and bun. She was an energetic child, these days. Parents who adored her and an entire battlestar full of military personnel who thought she hung the moon had given her the stability she'd lacked, before. Most of her nights she slept straight through, now.

When neither Sharon or Karl could watch her themselves, they got off-duty pilots or crew to watch her for them.

Or a civilian, like Billy Keikaya.

"Maybe she's not hungry," Billy suggested from his seat. He was far enough away to avoid getting pelted with food, for which he was thankful, as Sam already had ketchup streaking his shirt.

"Oh, she's hungry," replied Sam, his tone almost grim. Then he sighed and ate Hera's fry.

"No!" cried Hera, reaching out a hand and shaking her finger at him over the loss of her piece of potato.

Billy snickered and offered Hera one of his fries, "He's an idiot, huh?"

"Ears," agreed Hera, leaning over to grab Billy's fry and stuffing it in her mouth.

Sam took that as a sign of encouragement and didn't even give Billy an accusing look when the other man got up to make a trip to the restroom. He was probably going to wash off the bit of ketchup Hera had gifted his sleeve with.

"Aw, she's adorable," a woman said, breaking off from the group she was with to come beam down at Hera.

Hera, aware of her utter adorableness, beamed back at the woman.

Taking advantage of her distraction, Sam got a quick drink of his soda and tried to wipe some of the ketchup off his shirt.

"Is she yours?" The woman asked, looking across the table at him, smiling.

"Nah, she belongs to a friend of mine," Sam replied cheerfully. He couldn't help but be cheerful. After all, ketchup wasn't the end of the world. Also, there was something nice about having a conversation with another adult. Not that Billy was a child, but Billy's conversation tended to be full of mockery for Sam. "I volunteered to watch her for the day."

"That's so sweet of you," the woman smiled wider, then looked down at Hera, "Isn't that sweet of him, pumpkin?"

"I owed her a favor," offered Sam, wondering if maybe his hope of adult conversation was impossible. He smiled and held out his hand to the woman, suddenly feeling rude that he hadn't introduced himself, "I'm Sam, by the way."

"Sally." The woman shook his hand, squeezing his fingers slightly. Before their conversation could continue, her friends called her as ther food arrived. "Oh--" Quickly digging a piece of paper out of her pocket, she handed him the card, "Look, I've got to go. But call me, ok?"

Sitting back down, Billy stole another of Hera's fries, much to her amusement. "Damn, Anders."

"What?" Sam was staring at the card, trying to decide if he'd just missed something.

"You want me to go tell miss 100-watt smile that you're married?"

"Don't be--no--" Sam thought about their conversation and winced, "She was flirting, and she wants me to give her a call."

"And you," Billy stabbed a fry loaded with ketchup at him, "Flirted back."

Sam groaned, realizing that he had. Probably. At least, Sally had been flirting, mostly subtley. Apparently, being married to Kara Thrace had ruined Sam for picking up subtlety.

Hera giggled again and threw a ketchup-soaked fry at Sam, "Ears!"

"What should I do?" Sam asked, aware that asking Billy Keikaya for romantic advice was a little like asking Hera how best to blow up a building. He avoided looking at the other table, "What if she comes back over here? I can't just ignore her, can I?"

He didn't want to be rude, after all. Shit. Being married to Kara had apparently also ruined his ability to think on his feet around groupis. Not that Sally was a groupie. Probably.

Billy rolled his eyes, "Don't. Flirt."

As if that was totally clear, "I didn't plan to, the first time!"

Billy snickered again, "You want me to tell her you're married?"

"No, she might think--" Sam flapped a hand, wondering when he'd gone from interplanetary sports star and ladies man to idiot. Probably somewhere around the hundredth time Kara had frakked his brains out. Not that he was keeping count of things like that.

Hera pounced on another fry, talking to it about ears.

"That you're a slut?" Billy asked.

"That, too," replied Sam, a little distracted as he watched Hera chew the fry into a gluey paste and then slap it down on the table to join the half-dozen others. "Hera, don't make a mess, please."

"Ears, mess," Hera agreed, beaming at him.

"Anders, you suck at keeping her from making a mess. Just admit it." Billy reached out and tugged at Hera's shoulder, "He's an idiot, right?"

"I'iot!" Hera agreed, leaning against Billy for a moment.

The one thing Sam had noticed, almost from the first time he watched Hera for her parents, was that her parents seemed to think she was a little angel. And yet, around him, she appeared to have picked up incredibly bad habits. Dribbling ketchup, splotching his pants, and generally being a little terror. A sweet and adorable terror, to be certain.

Billy could get her to behave, a feat Sam was jealous of. "If you two are done dissecting my character, we should probably head back."

"No!" Hera declared, before dissolving into giggles and 'helping' Billy stack their mostly-eaten food on a tray. She objected to him removing her straw paper, though.

"Sam?" Sally was back, half-smiling at him, "I'm sorry, we're running late, so I can't stay to--"

"Earlier--" he interrupted, grabbing her card and holding it out, "I'm sorry, I think I gave you the wrong impression, I'm--"

A sigh escaped her and she took his card. "I should have known." She looked at Billy, then back at Sam, and shrugged, "The good ones are always gay."

"And taken," Billy added, nudging Hera.

Sally was gone before Sam could pull his jaw off the floor. He glared at Billy, then shrugged, having to admit that it worked. He was most definitely taken, at any rate.

With a sigh, he left the tray to Billy and stood to scoop Hera up. She happily babbled about circles and ears as she patted his chest, smearing more ketchup on them both. Obviously, there would be some sort of bathing involved once they were back on Galactica.

And maybe Kara laughing her ass off while Billy relayed the day's exploits to her.

And then some sex. Mind-blowing sex, in fact.

Hera snuggled closer and let out a sigh, falling into a doze almost immediately. Sam stared down at her, shaking his head a little at how fast she wound down. His lips twitched, wondering what Kara would think if he offered to drag Hera along the next time they went planet-side together.

She'd probably shoot him.

*glee*

This totally makes up for the creepy. Sam with Hera is the cutest thing ever, and omg BILLY. I would quote my favorite bits, but I don't think the comment box will hold the whole fic. ;)

Now I really am going to bed.

*laughs*

You know, I never considered that it was creepy.

But Sam, Billy and Hera are obviously adorable. ;)

Thank you =)

EARS!

I had to reread that. It.. surprisingly didn't suck. I'm always surprised that I don't suck at things. Still.

HERA! *CLINGS* And omg, BILLY! Sally thinks Anders and Billy are gay for each other! AHAHAHAH! Oh, boys. They should totally not go around unsupervised. Ever.

And yet, when they do, we get THIS FIC. OMG, GLEEE!

AHAH. You are awesome, though.

Dude, Billy is all, "It's not my fault!" and Jean's all, "Anders, I can't let you take him ANYWHERE." Meanwhile, Helo is going about how Hera is a complete angel, and he does NOT know what Sam means when he says she's a terror. At all. Sharon is smirking, though, and suggesting that Kara watch her, next time.

Thank you =)

I like Billy! He's alive in at least a few other things. Thank you =)

OMG, so adorably cute. Yeah, being married to Kara has definitely made Sam forget the art of subtlety. Kara's idea of subtle is probably, "Wanna frak?"

P.S. Hera's such a little brat. Heee! And what's up with talking about ears all the time?

P.S. #2. BILLEH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I was listening to the radio the other day and "Let's Get it On" started playing, and I was like "...dude, that is Kara and Sam, right there--"

The ears thing was [livejournal.com profile] aj's fault, she once wrote adorable fic with Domino hauling baby Rachel around.

Billy is essential when one is constructing happy universes.

I ain't got much more than that, but you made me smile on a dreary day, so thanks.

Hee! So cute.

At least, Sally had been flirting, mostly subtley. Apparently, being married to Kara Thrace had ruined Sam for picking up subtlety.

Ha! Yes, yes it would.

You're giving me a new appreciation for poor dead Billy here. ;) Very nice. :)

I like this a lot- I am not a fan of sticky incontinent small children, even Agathon ones that might someday be boys and hot like Helo, but I enjoyed this a lot- I miss Billy, and I loved the gay thing. So true.

Thank you =)

I miss Billy quite often, A.j. misses him more. Sigh. Billy says the gay thing is totally Sam's fault, and Sam admits it's probably true. ;)

A.J. as in Alessandro? Or am I missing something? (Not unusual.....)

Nah. Sorry, A.j. as in [livejournal.com profile] aj, I was just lazy and didn't type the user code.
