I was going to vote ‘No.’ for Gwen, because I really… only liked her for a few episodes at the beginning, but voted ‘except when she’s a two-timing bitch.’ I started hating her when she started to get it on with Owen (although I wasn’t sure why they were shipping her with Jack before that, well, assumed it was because he was JACK…more over, I wasn’t sure why she had a boyfriend in the first place. As much as I like Rhys, I think that bothers me allot.). I would have voted that for Kara as well, because whenever I get all tough love on her she is, but as a whole I *love* Kara and have since the first season. I never really had any feeling for Gwen other than the ‘she’s okay’ I felt at the beginning.
It doesn't matter how you phrase it. You, and the people answering the poll proved the question I wanted answered: It's ok for Kara Thrace to be a two-timing whore, but it's not ok for Gwen Cooper to be so. Full stop, this is what is called a double-standard. The only thing that would make it more obvious would be if Kara were a man.
Maybe it is a double-standard, but Kara wasn't written from the beginning to be cheating on her boyfriend. Gwen was. Had I started watching BSG in s3 I probably wouldn't have liked Kara either.
But...Gwen wasn't written that way from the beginning.
I thought the show was very clear that OWEN was a slimeball from the beginning and while I was tremendously squicked that Gwen (whom I liked) was, well, touching him at all, I sympathized with her situation.
I also thought that, as bad as chunks of the S1 writing were, it was clear that Gwen's affair with Owen was based on her loneliness and the awkwardness of having this Big Secret Life and having no outlet for that stress...and Owen being available and eager and offering. ETA: I meant to continue this paragraph by saying that it took nearly half the season for Gwen to get to this point and that she was entirely NOT cheating from the beginning. /ETA
I think that Gwen's actions were ill-advised and unfair to Rhys (whom I VERY much like). I think Owen bears equal responsibility for the affair and I don't think HE saw anything wrong with it, which is a further problem with his character.
I was going to put the "except when" for Gwen and then I realized that, as much as Owen is SLIMY and DISGUSTING and OMGgetawayfromGwennowyourapist and wtfiswrongwithyouthatyouhaven'tkilledtheprick and as much as I do like Rhys, I do actually have sympathy for Gwen even in that storyline.
I like her and find her attractive and appealing and I'm a sucker for her accent and, well...I like Gwen, yes.
The thing that would make me happiest regarding TW would be for Owen to be dismembered and the remains scattered.
I feel NO sympathy for The Rapist. And I am glad I could articulate what you have been thinking. I just LIKE Gwen, and I think she made a mistake, but I can forgive her, especially since there was remorse--albeit poorly executed re: retcon--and a CHANGE.
Owen? NO remorse. NO change. NO repentance. NO comprehension that he is a misogynistic bastard user creep fungus...words fail me.
And I think that burying at the crossroads would put the parts too near one another. And that quicklime would be better.
I truly consider Owen irredeemable and continue to be TERRIBLY bothered by the clear evidence that RTD does NOT see that this is RAPE and does not understand what constitutes "consent."
mtgat has said, and I think she has a great point, that the "Yes means yes, no means no" campaign has gone rather astray and should be changed to an unequivocal, "ONLY yes means yes," along with the added and "Yes can only be SAID if it is said when the person is competent to GIVE consent" (mentally, sober, age-wise, not coerced, etc.).
Can we hit Rusty over the head? (And murder and maim Owen?)
I had to put "sorta" in a "I wanted to like Gwen but the writing was awful" kind of way. It just seemed like she was always getting the same role/storyline – she's the Heart of the Team, so she gets to go do the Emotional things. And gets shot/injured/imperiled all the time. I wanted her character to mature or at least be allowed to use her police skills, but kept being disappointed. :/ Since most Torchwood writing is rather subpar, guess that's what fanfiction is for.
Liked Kara for most of the mini, season 1 and season 2. from epi 5 'collaborators' began to seriously dislkie her. began to notice parts of her personality not of the sane. Her behaviour kinda gave me doubts. Loved Gwen at first cos she is our guide to the rest of the cast. Again began to go off her when she started the cheating thing with Owen. Not liking of the cheating. Kinda pedantic about that. As for pie yes in all its shapes and forms.
Interesting. Reading the replies makes me happy I voted first and then read. Hee.
I love Kara Thrace.
I love Gwen Cooper.
They're human and they're layered and they're kick-ass and they're trying to do the best they can with what they're given and sometimes falling on their asses, but they pick back up and try again.
Man. Voting and running around in the arctic chill has left me as high as Torchwood did. Hrm. Obviously, I should try bottling this and selling it sometime.

Poor Owen. Can we bury him at a crossroads, with salt? (I like the guy, but he is kinda a creeping mold)
