In this day of rampant annoyance..

I have a whole passel of notes, from Tuesday, because I was listening to WPR and happened across good programming, and--the thing is, the only thing I can remember right now is that Dr. Bob Ballard (you know, he used to do the awesome science spots during Seaquest credits) was talking about how the Earth is kinda getting sick of the human race and will one day rise up and kill us all (I'm all for that).

He said there were ways we could avoid this, and the biggest one (he was running out of time) was the empowerment of women. (which is paraphrased, because I was typing at the time and had to stop and kinda gape and go, "man. Maybe I should by some of his books...")

Isn't that the guy that discovered the Titanic?

Did he say how exactly women could save the planet?

He didn't have time to, though he apparently thinks we're far more capable of doing so than men.

I've heard that too, particularly because overpopulation and the resulting famine/disease tends to go down the more women are educated and/or economically empowered.

Sadly, not a surprise. Education and job training should be mandatory, dammit.

Yes, UNICEF found that the best way to reduce poverty, disease, unemployment and environmental degradation is to educate women - women tend to share their knowledge, wealth, prestige and skills with their families and communities. The benefit from educating men is less pronounced.

Somehow, this is not a surprise.

Nice to know that some men are aware that we are smart. But unfortunately its the STUPID ONES who are still in charge and believe that being on this world *they* are in charge cos God made them 1st. 1st is not always best. God made us '2nd' but made us best why cos we actually know we are only caretakers/tenants and why the landlord turns up we going to have to explain that hole in the roof! Don't worry with loss of half the female population in China and India and their reliance on having boy children only. The world may just figure it out that without "us weak females". The Human race will be a lost cause and the Planet will not start again for a couple of hundred million years. After all she is only just reaching puberty! Planet years of course.
Sorry needed to rant there.
