ahahah. oh, snow.

I went into Saturn this morning, to get the 'check engine' light checked, and it was an o2 sensor, which, bah. But anyway, the mechanic manager guy is like "it's gonna be about an hour" and I was good with that. I had Captain Jack and good music (while everyone else was watching the Country Music channel, wtf), and was expanding on my BSG/FS crossover notes.

And then he comes back in, like, twenty minutes, and says I'm done!

Dude. I was just hitting my typing stride!

So I went to Toys'r'us, looking for vipers and things like that. They had Doctor Who toys. o.O And Serafina, so I bagged myself a witch with a bow (and a tiny Grand Moff Tarkin and Padme, who are both frickin' adorable. Anyone want the whiny Jedi-boy?).

And then on to Borders, to plunder the last of my gift card. I poked around and found the BSG season two companion, and read bits, and, and. Guys. Katee's (paraphrasing) words about Kara, at the end of season two are: "Anders has brought out a softer side, she's settled down and happy, and about ready to have children."

...

Kara + children = ???

AHAHAHAH. Am amused, though. Because she's all (and the companion is all) about how Kara and Sam are in teh Luv. Also. Ron mentions that he never wanted Kara and Lee to get together unless it was all screwed-up, which makes me giggle like a giggling thing.

I did not buy it. Or the season three companion. Instead, I got Jekyll (I am weak, and besides, it's way cheaper than 35 for a single episode of Who).

And then I went to the post office and bagged me some Captain Jack and Gwen awesomeness (and Harry Dresden).

Oh. And it's snowing.

ALSO. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT.

Torchwood, series two (YES, NEW CAPTAIN JACK) starts tonight on BBC America. I have dvr'd it, as I was like "what if I forget?"

I will never understand fandom's obsession with having that character get gentle and make kids. I mean, I only watched a bit of BSG, but even I could tell there was no way anything but a lobotomy would make her resembling a "normal" mom or wife. She will be the queen of tough love and teach her kids how to build guns and repair whatever they call starfighters in BSG, and they will know Mommy loves them because she taught them how to kill things and told them to suck it up when they fell. And Daddy will understand that he always has diaper duty because Mommy would shred the diapers in frustration.

ETA: *clarification as I am multitasking and doing paperwork* I mean the character type in general...both fandom and canon ruin them by trying to make them "conventional" once they're "in love"

Bwahahaha. *laughs at your icon*

ahem.

I knew what you meant, actually. But, um, I'm sure someone with more learning and analytical skills could dive into why there are tropes and stereotypes and why women (especially) tend to slot characters into specific categories, but most especially the 2.3 children and settled-down-happyness.

Um. And your last sentences about Kara being the queen of tough love is, um. Very accurate. *giggles madly* Right down to Sam being the suffering husband type.

Kara is very like several anime and manga characters I love unconditionally...the reason I couldn't warm up to her when I watched wasn't because of what she was like, but because it was just so heavy handed about it and abrasive, and I felt like I was habing it shoved down my throat(I also had the uncomfortable feeling that I was also supposed to equate her strength with male masculinity.)

But, anyway: short version is that I've spent plenty of time examining the character type. Kara seemed to be a lot like Sanzo from Saiyuki, in a way.

As far as the tropes...people see "love" as making a man settle and turn into the protector and "open up" about his feelings, and the woman to be the "home" and "gentle" and "haven," so when the individual characters don't fall neatly into the pattern, they try to force them into it, and writers(pro and fans) feel they have to make the characters fit into that for them to have "grown."

*and I would go more deeply into it, but I'm off to lunch*

Ron mentions that he never wanted Kara and Lee to get together unless it was all screwed-up, which makes me giggle like a giggling thing.

Well that ties in with the quote from his blog which I've repeated in comments here before, when he was asked whether there'd ever be Kara/Lee onscreen and his reply was to the effect that, "If we last long enough we'll get to everything."

It is possible, yes.

I refuse to debate right now. I just find it amusing.

Regarding Kara+kids, here's something more to (hopefully) amuse you:

I actually thought she looked pregnant (see icon?) at the end of LDYB2 and then thought the previews with Kasey might have been a 3-yr jump between the last part of Season 2 and Season 3. So I totally get what the Companion book was saying - I mean, anything could have happened during that year jump that we did not know about at the time. Of course this was months before I started checking the Web for spoilers.

....oh, man. Don't say that where [livejournal.com profile] lucyparavel can hear, or she'll insist on "three years later" fic with babies...

Haha, just tell her that I'm terrible at predicting how things would go in BSG. Proof: Even though I loved Anders since Resistance 204, I had a running bet for every episode after Downloaded until Rapture that RDM was going to kill him off (because RDM would so do that). Hence my love/hate relationship with spoilers. Love them 'coz I'm can stop stressing over stuff like Sam leaving the show. And HATE 'cause I detest knowing for sure what happens next - I like being shocked!

hah!

You know, the funniest thing ever? Anders' last episode was supposed to be Collaborators.

And yet.

(mostly, I base this on an interview he gave, where he said he was only contracted for five episodes... which then stretched to include Unfinished Business. Oh, and Eye of J. And Rapture. And--by Taking a Break, I figured they'd changed their minds...)

Also. he's really pretty all sweaty and dirty.

[identity profile] artemis-90.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
REALLY???? So I could've won that bet. Still I have never been so glad to have been in a long losing streak. And now he's a regular (*dances*) !
