one thing before work

So, a few weeks ago, I was sorting through old tapes, looking for a space Nova fix (we were hard up), and I came across the DS9 episode with Dax's ex-girlfriend, Lenara. She was a familiar face, but I couldn't quite place her, so I looked her up.

Guys.

Gibbs stole Dax's ex.

Lenara = Colonel Hollis Mann.

*insert ramble about how awesome her tv girlfriend (shut up, yes, I have several) is*

I had one of those surreal moments last night when I realized that Lisa Edelstein played at Sam's prostitute/law student friend in s1 of The West Wing. It was like, "No wonder that character is so awesome."

And that episode of DS9 was really freakin' awesome.

hahah.

The episode is pretty decent, though it was overly-publicized.

Was it? I didn't have cable until I graduated from college, so I didn't actually watch DS9 until January of 1997. It was in s4 at that point so that episode had already aired. I didn't catch it until probably a year later when it aired in syndication.

oh, man. Yeah. Before the episode aired, there was tons and tons of publicity (for and against it) surrounding it, because it was OMG THE FIRST GIRLGIRL KISS EVER. And here was Star Trek, Breaking barriers again, like they had in 1960-whatever!

er. To paraphrase.

And then they never suggested same-gender relationships again, except for Seven and Katie. (I'm pulling that out of my ass, as I don't actually remember anymore.)

I wonder why they would promote it as the first f/f kiss. L.A. Law had one back in 1991 (Abby and C.J.), and that was in primetime.

And yeah, for an "ideal" society, Trek sure did suck at showing any queer relationships.
