sft: Golden Compass

I've seen so many varied reactions, I honestly had no idea what I was going to think. I knew, from the trailers, that some of it was going to be so pretteh, I wouldn't care.

Dear Lyra, by the middle of the movie, you already had me, you lying, cheating, awesome, thinking-on-your-feet girl. But then you went and blew shit up. Obviously, I am yours forever.
Sincerely, Lyss

I have a type, people. This has been pretty damned well-established before this, obviously. Lyra? Falls neatly into that type.

But Lyra aside, I loved this movie. Ok, love may be strong. I intensely enjoyed it, then. It swept you right into the world, building it around you and never really stopping for any sort of tutorial on How Things Work. And there were zeppelins! And tiny bug machines! And the picture-taking-thingie, which was gorgeous and awesome!

Not to mention, a bear got its lower mandible ripped off.

Srsly. A girl character who is not meek, mild, or willing to take crap from anyone, even if they're a gigantic fucking bear.

Unlike another favorite female character of mine, when confronted by a nasty machine, instead of hitting it with a spoon and making it spark a little, she FUCKING BLEW IT UP.

And now, I poke around, because, dude. I am still high from this movie. That? Is more than indication that it was awesome.

Is that Nicole Kidman's character or Eva something's character? I was looking forward to seeing the movie, now I'm even more psyched about it...

Actually, it's Kara Thrace. In the realm of blowing shit up, Lyra pwns Kara.

*sulks*

Kara used to blow up lots of toasters, back in season two. Half the fun of Razor was just getting to see her actually do cool shit in a viper, again. *bitter*

But I'm glad the movie is good! The book was awesome.

I was mostly referring to The Farm which has one of the most sub-par awesome hero escape sequences EVER. In most other respects, Kara gets more explosions (except for season three). ....oh, god, I can feel meta on Lyra vs Kara vs the Hero's Quest coming on, and just why Kara's version is so grounded in normal gender roles and why that sucks so much ass.

dammit.

*laughs* I don't know when I pimped Firefly--mostly because I've not watched it much.

I think I liked it because there's very little hand-holding, or explaining going on. And. Well, there were no subplots that bored me (X-Men 2, I'm looking at you).

If I could re-write it, or at least fast-forward (oh, wait. I did that, recently) through the Wolverine and Bobby bits, I'd be pleased. Because Jean being awesome and then her and Scott breaking a dam (now there's true love, baby) together is hot. And. um. Awesome. Anyway. The movie would be all about Scott and Jean and their baby from the future.

Lyra was indeed pretty cool. I was rather disappointed with the movie as a whole, though. There were some pretty cool bits -- yes, bear getting his mandible ripped off was one! -- but overall the movie just felt very...hollow. And it didn't end so much as... stop.

I thought it was a good end--there's a definite feel that there's more to the story.

I didn't know what everyone was complaining about, because Lyra was just perfect.

I honestly don't know, mostly because I never bothered reading the bad reviews (or the good, unless it was non-specific). Possibly, Lyra was too Mary Sueish? Not enough was explained to people?

[identity profile] million-moments.livejournal.com 2007-12-22 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone I know kept using the same phrase, they said it lacked substance. They could never be more specific though...

I suppose that's a fair quibble. But, er, I haven't read the books, so I'm not sure what else (other than the God=evil thing) was missing.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I... oh god, I must see this movie and mentally overwrite Nicole Kidman with Judi Dench.

Daniel is barely in it, though. As a warning. The movie really isn't about him, though.

[identity profile] mrushgdi.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The movie was good, the book is even more awesome. They really toned her down in the movie. And Mrs. Coulter and Asriel are much more evil in the book.

I got the impression about Asriel, actually. Just. His abrupt way of dealing with Lyra, bits and pieces of other things... anyway. It's good to know the books are good.

[identity profile] ellestra.livejournal.com 2007-12-21 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a great movie.
I have no idea why it's not a bigger success.
I loved Lyra - she was exactly how she was suppose to be. And other characters too.
My only complain is that it was too short - not enough development of relationships between people. I wrote about it but beware of spoilers. (http://ellestra.livejournal.com/35618.html)

Well, the churches around the globe are panning it. And hate it though I might, religion still has a massive hold on people. Also, the lead is a girl, who does lots of ungirly things. I'm sure that plays a huge part in it (if Lyra were a boy, there'd be huge huge press about how great a movie it was, all about coming of age, blah blah blah...)

I didn't mind it being short, honestly. I read into what we were given. But then. Comics fan. And you have to wank BSG canon a lot to get it to all fit with peoples' relationships.
