bsg meta: random thoughts on Sam and dog tags

May contain spoilers for seasons 1-3.

Mostly, this started because I was wondering if I thought Sam would hit Kara back if she punched him. I'm still undecided on that--for the record, it's not that Sam wouldn't get physical, it's that Sam's approach to confrontation tends to go slightly sideways.

So, anyway, it suddenly occurred to me that, in its own emotionally painful way, Sam handing the dog tag back was like punching Kara. In the gut with a sledgehammer, given her state at the time.

Which brings me to the thought that, while I want to hit Sam for walking away, I'm actually glad he's not perfect. He doesn't always get Kara, and sometimes, he fucks it up as much as she does. (which then leads to wondering about his childhood and past relationships, sadly)

*distracted* Martouf and his pretty blue eyes are on NCIS.

I remember in EoJ, when Kara stepped between Sam and Lee I was honestly expecting Sam to punch her in the face. It was right after UB, after all, and I found it so strangely touching that they don't hit each other. (Oh, battlestar, how you rewrite my standards.) Not that I have a problem with women and men fighting (on the show I mean!) when they can both take care of themselves, which Kara can. But I was honestly surprised that they had Lee punch her first when they were outside the ring. My roommate had just started watching the show at that point and she yelped, which reminded me that yeah, that's not entirely normal. :D I think they get away with it b/c Katee and Jamie are about the same size, heh. Whearas Trucco is so much bigger that it would bring the audience up short to have him punching her, especially first.

Yeah, I remember reading an interview with Trucco where he said that he didn't entirely get that scene, but he actorwanked it to himself that Sam was really hurt by being pushed away after four months and then being basically told "I look at you and see my rapist." And so for a moment he wanted to hurt her back. And yeah, that's not perfect at all, but no one on this show is perfect and Sam's relationship track-record is better than most. I think people sometimes forget that there have been quite a few times when Lee's been very cruel to Kara when she needed him; he called her a whore in public and wouldn't accept her apology for having a sex-life, he was ready to let Sam die for spite a whole year after she married him, and in the episode right after Sam gave back the dog-tag he told her if she was suicidal he'd be happy to help. :D And of course Kara's been very cruel to them both. I don't hate Lee for any of that because he's only human too, but I just don't get why people who can forgive him have to hate my poor Sam for this one thing, heh. *hugs Sammy*

hah. You know, I'd never taken that from that bit, but then, I always took that scene as Kara stepping between them and reassuring Sam that Lee was momentary--kind of a "hey, baby, don't hit the little boy, I know he's annoying" kinda thing. If only because of the way she steps into his space and puts her hands on him.

Argh. I wish I could find this interview. I've never read it, and I want to read it!
