film review: Sunshine

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this movie, but. Non-spoilery? This is the movie that all of those shitty Skiffy Saturday flicks are attempting to be. If I had to use one word, it would be awesome.

The framework is a fairly standard SF staple: dying sun, mission to save it. There was a mission before that never returned, yadda yadda.

I have to admit the movie pretty much won me over when the opening sequence was dinner, with everyone squabbling and joking, and being crew-y. The type of stuff that made me enjoy the first Alien movie, and the stuff that made Farscape so damned good: human interaction that feels realistic.

The cast are all decent, with Cilian Murphy's blueblueblue eyes turning in a fine performance. It's a cast of international feel (and the prior mission was run by a Russian), which is nice, given that when a cast is usually "OMG INTERNATIONAL" it's usually just a bunch of white guys. Further, there are women, and they're not there to just hold everyone's hands and pat them on the head.

I honestly can't try to explain without spoiling, for the most part. But this was totally the kind of movie that appeals to me: danger, world-saving, sacrifice, moral dilemmas, beautiful photography, and lots of. ah. death. I like death. ;)

There are no rabbits from hats, here. No last-minute reprieves, no, "and the day is saved!" The ending is as awesome as it should be.

I suppose I should note that, in all honesty, if you don't like having to think or consider philosophy, this movie is so not for you. And if you hated Event Horizon, it's definitely not. Heck, if you disliked Farscape, Alien, or season ten of Stargate, it's totally not for you.

Oh, it is so very very awesome. And I loved it to itty bitty pieces.

YES. And it was shiny and well-acted and, and, it ended not-happy. Which makes me gleeful.
