A little behind...

So, um, apparently, LJ has finally been prodded enough to clarify those policies they were kind of desperately trying not to. But since fandom wouldn't shut the fuck up about them, they... have. I think. It's hard to tell. The incest fans have all of their panties in a twist now (you'd think that would help matters, since, y'know, that's why they write it). But. Dudes. You kind of brought it on yourselves.

So. Anyway. There's lots of whining and stuff, and I just. Don't. Get. why you people don't delete your livejournals and go elsewhere if LJ is so. Very. OPPRESSIVE for you.

It's not like trying to leave your house, your country, your religion or your fucking marriage.

I would like the ability to kill stupid people with my brain now.

In other news, I was told today that it's perfectly acceptable for the company I work for to hand out ALL of my personal information to whomever they want. That's just brilliant, that is. I discovered this because we're trying to get the billing address changed on one of the corporate Sprint accounts, and Sprint policy requires a copy of a drivers license to do so. And I said, "Company policy should state 'we don't give out employee personal information of that nature'." and was told by one of the upper management types that I was wrong.

M&I Bank: selling you down the river since forever.

I don't really understand it, either. See, I assumed LJ, like every other public media in this country, already followed obscenity law. Any publishing medium that gets noticed is expected to follow it. It's not fair, it's deliberately vague, it's an archaic, puritanical law but... that's not Six Apart's fault. Um, anywhere people start publicly trading around stuff that looks like prurient kiddie porn, endorsing rape in a positive manner, and such, obscenity law kicks in. I think that law is a fucking joke, but like I said.... So I'll be over here eating my blueberries and cream (in a prurient manner) and waiting for HP and this latest brouhaha to pass.

Besides, I just wrote a scene where Elizabeth beat up a lordling with a broom, and that's way more interesting. (Now there's a fiancee to kidnap).

Tell me you are finishing this fic, at some point, so I can be gleeful, yes?

I'm doing my best and have written something every day. I estimate 2/3 or 3/4 complete though, sadly, this is only 85k but that owes a great deal to my chosen narrative style. So far it's shaping up to be a serious crackfic, if that makes any sort of sense.

Dear LJ, I did not mean "Reykjavik" when I wrote crackfic.

Whoot!

And, as to the obscenity laws, I've honestly got no idea. I just tend to think LJ is like "we don't care, just don't get caught..." about it.

This is not directed at you, since we entirely agree on these issues.

INCEST/PEDO/LOLI/ETC. FANDOM, SHUT THE FUCK UP. You make the rest of us look bad, you twats.

The servers that these comments reside on? Six Apart's servers. Our accounts? Exist because of Six Apart and LJ. Our ability to use the service? Is by the grace of Six Apart. I do not agree with how they've handled this - I mean, at this point I think most can agree that sending [livejournal.com profile] burr86 out to give public statements is a phenomenally bad idea, because he puts his foot in his mouth every single fucking time - but frankly, at this point, I'd like to see Six Apart's lawyers just post to LJ Biz and say flat out "we don't want your kiddie porn here. We have our asses to cover legally."

On the other hand, I think LJ is, of course, thinking almost solely about the bottom line financially, and I'm sure they're concerned about pissing off certain segments of fandom that may not renew their paid accounts. But I don't see a large permanent migration off of LJ happening, so...

I was thinking this morning that the entire shrill outcry over Strikethrough 2007 does indicate that the Americans in fandom on LJ do have a kneejerk reaction against anything that smacks of censorship, and that's not entirely a bad thing, in my opinion, in the abstract; it's a good thing for Americans to be getting pissed off about. But free speech doesn't always exist in the private sphere.

HOWEVER: This kind of bullshit makes us ALL look bad. (http://community.livejournal.com/lj_biz/241182.html?thread=11068958#t11068958) "Pedophilia is not a crime." You know, the subtext there? I'm bettin' that there's over an 85% chance that that person is a pedo.

And this one! (http://community.livejournal.com/lj_biz/241182.html?thread=10880286#t10880286)

""[...] or other material -- including drawings and text -- that explicitly depicts minors under the age of 18 (real or not) in a graphic sexual context." ... "Smut focused on a twelve year old is not okay."

ROFL, thanks LJ! My favorite pairing (one of them is 12-or-under, yes) is now... not permitted, it seems. Dude... it's not real. Why j00 ban? ;_; Or maybe I misunderstood?"

CREEPY! Hi, fandom! You're FUCKING SCARY!

And the funny thing is, lj is trying really hard to dance around whether it's illegal or not... because I don't think they care. But fandom keeps poking them.

And, yes. Fandom is scary. But remember! We don't have to be responsible fans, 'cause that's just CRAZYTALK.

[identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
LJ is putting their foot in their mouth with every new comment that a member of LJ staff makes in either of those two new posts to lj_biz.

Honestly, why don't they just have their lawyers craft a blanket statement to put in a new TOS saying "we have the right to delete or suspend journals at any time for any reason, bishes. SO FUCKING DEAL."

[identity profile] ladyniko.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Because, that would make sense? :-p

Seriously - I've given up following this because uhm, yeah - InsaneJournal - much stabler and oh yeah, 100 icons w/ a free account.

If and when LJ implodes from all the stupidity, I can pick right up over on IJ.

Nothing in my interests should make me stand out, I don't think, and I am so not into the main interests being targeted.

Like lyssie said - if you don't like what they're saying, then leave! No one's forcing them to stay here! :-p

And, Kali - yes, are preaching to the choir here - too bad that those in need of "saving" (from their own stupidity?) won't listen.

[identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
I entirely agree. That being said, I am nervous about the staff of LJ having to decide what's obscene and what isn't; given the appalling lack of consistency in how they've handled this entire issue, that doesn't bode well when we get into grey areas. On the other hand, although I have grave doubts about some of LJ's staff, they do bother to respond to us; that's more than many other blogging services do, by far.

I'm kind of surprised to get a comment from you at all; the last time I checked (meaning, the last time I ran across anything that you posted on LJ), which granted was a while ago, I thought you were busy wanking me over on BRPS, or am I mistaken?

[identity profile] ladyniko.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know who's who - I mostly avoid the whole BRPS except to laugh at it. I'm not really an RP'er by any stretch of the means.

And, if I did, it was about the whole handling of the Jimmy-mun dead cat pic, which was handled poorly on both sides of the issue.
